Bridgerton’s Saddest Love Story Deserved a Real Ending, Not a Birthday Hat and a Closed Door
Image
In the course of a theatrical run that has spanned over 4 years, and the same number of seasons spread over the series, the Bridgerton universe has given its fans a lot to be excited about. Based on Julia Quinn’s books of the same name, the series has shown a propensity for keeping fans intrigued time and again.

With innumerable characters on a journey to find a suitable match (and love), it doesn’t come as a shock that there are moments that leave us yearning for more, alongside moments that leave our hearts content. Chris Van Dusen and his team have done a fantastic job, getting fans hooked.

Bridgerton’s Lady Danbury Deserves a Scandal of Her Own, Not Another Season of Cleaning Other People’s Mess
Image
Dearest gentle readers, one cannot help but notice that while balls are thrown and reputations shattered, our beloved Lady Danbury remains forever burdened with the task of putting out fires she did not start. A sharp tongue, unmatched poise, and secrets of her own, yet she’s forever relegated to cleaning up after the ton’s more scandalous members. Where, this author asks, is her scandal? Her moment of chaos and intrigue?

Surely a woman of her wit deserves more than being the Bridgerton universe’s resident fixer. Perhaps it’s time society turned its gaze… and its gossip… toward her.

Lady Danbury doesn’t need to clean up, she needs her own Bridgerton scandal Adjoa Andoh in Bridgerton | Credits: Netflix.

Lady Agatha Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) has spent three seasons of Bridgerton fixing everyone else’s drama with sass, elegance, and zero tolerance for nonsense. But come season 4, fans are...

Lady Danbury Has All the Power Yet Bridgerton Keeps Sidelining Her in Favor of Whiny Rich Kids Every Season
Image
If scandal is the lifeblood of the Ton, then let’s talk about its shady cousin called injustice. After all, one character from Netflix’s Bridgerton has been repeatedly getting shoved into the corner, while the Bridgerton and Featherington siblings cried into their lace handkerchiefs over suitors, scandals, and brand-new gowns.

Yes, we’re talking about Lady Danbury—the woman who has been running the damn show without ever needing to raise her voice. And yet, season after season, this regal icon is pushed to the background, with the spotlight repeatedly getting focused on the young heirs. It’s high time Bridgerton looked closely at the true diamond of every season.

If Bridgerton Season 4 Whitewashes Lady Danbury’s Backstory, the Netflix Series Will Prove It Cares More About Corsets Than Character
Image
After a stunning run for three seasons, Bridgerton is all set to once again return to the screens with a fourth season that is already as greatly anticipated as ever. While a lot of fans are looking forward to other storylines to materialize, including the show’s focus on Benedict’s love story, some are also hoping that the series does something about Lady Danbury’s backstory.

In the respective series’ prequel spin-off show Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, a lot was hinted about the respective character’s past, and now, we are hoping the original Netflix series doesn’t whitewash her backstory just like that and instead plods more on it. Because if it does, then the show will inevitably end up proving that it cares more about corsets than characters.

'Queen Charlotte' Makes This 'Bridgerton' 'Ship Better
Image
Netflix's Regency-era series, Bridgerton, may have had an extended break between Seasons 2 and 3, but in the meantime, fans got to enjoy the spin-off, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which explores the early relationship between Bridgerton's royals, Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel and India Amarteifio) and King George III (James Fleet and Corey Mylchreest), but the prequel story connects to the original in many ways, even altering the dynamic between two fan-favorite Bridgerton characters. While the Bridgerton franchise focuses heavily on romance, there are a few great platonic relationships, as Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Eloise (Claudia Jessie) in Seasons 1 and 2, Violet (Ruth Gemmell) and Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh and Arsema Thomas), and even the playful sibling relationships among the Bridgertons provide a different kind of relationship that can be just as compelling.

What Is the Bridgerton Great Experiment in Queen Charlotte?
Image
Bridgertonwhisks fans into a fantasy version of Regency England they’ve never seen before. The series unveils an integrated ton, where biracial romance is embraced and the queen (Golda Rosheuvel) is a Black woman. But, we’re told, the aristocracy wasn’t always so welcoming.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story unfurls the origin story of the “beautiful mixture of humanity” on display in the Bridgerton universe, as executive producer Betsy Beers calls it. At the very core of this tale is the Great Experiment, which kicks off when young Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) arrives in England to marry young King George (Corey Mylchreest). The lives of Black socialites like young Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas) are revolutionized in the process.

The Queen Charlotte cast, creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes and the other executive producers are ready to answer every question you have about the Experiment that changed the ton forever.

What Happened To Brimsley's Lover In Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story?
Image
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story introduces new characters like Reynolds, adding depth to the series' tragic romance narrative. Brimsley & Reynolds' secret, illegal love story plays out against a backdrop of royal intrigue and societal restrictions in this spin-off. Shonda Rhimes hints at Reynolds' fate, leaving room for a potential reunion with Brimsley in future Bridgerton seasons.

The Bridgerton prequel spin-off Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story introduces new characters, such as Reynolds (Freddie Dennis), who does not appear in the main series, leading to the question, what happened to Brimsley’s lover? Taking place over 50 years before Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte features younger versions of Bridgerton characters, including Brimsley (Sam Clemmett), Lady Danbury (Arsema Thomas), and Violet Bridgerton née Ledger (Connie Jenkins-Greig). Why Lord Danbury Isn't In Bridgerton (But Why He's So Important)
Image
Lord Danbury's absence in Bridgerton was due to his death before the events of the show, but his impact is felt throughout the series. Lady Danbury's relationship with Lord Danbury was loveless and abusive, leading her to become a powerful and influential character in Bridgerton after his death. Lady Danbury's friendship with Queen Charlotte allowed her to secure her title and pave the way for people of color in the royal court, despite not being associated with a powerful man.

Content warning: this post contains references to sexual assault

Though Lord Danbury didn't appear in Bridgerton, he played an important role in the Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story spinoff. Premiering in 2020, the Netflix original historical romance series Bridgerton explores the lives of the Bridgerton siblings as they navigate the royal social scene during England's Regency Era. The overwhelming popularity of the series based on Julia Quinn's novels warranted...

How ‘Queen Charlotte’ Costumes Pulled Inspiration From the Met Gala
Image
This story about “Queen Charlotte” costume designers Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

What would a Met Ball with a Georgian theme look like? That was the inspiration behind Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon’s costumes for Netflix’s “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” Shonda Rhimes’ spinoff of the hit Regency-era drama series straddles both that period, when Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) bore the public weight of the Crown, and 56 years earlier, when she (India Amarteifio) married King George (Corey Mylchreest) and adjusted to life as a royal.

For the later timeline, set in 1817, Paolo and Frecon honored the style established by “Bridgerton” costume designer Ellen Mirojnick: high-waisted, fluid gowns influenced by ancient Greece and Rome. For the 1761-set portion, they went back to the conical shape, when women were tightly cinched...

Why Arsema Thomas Wanted To Play Young Lady Danbury In Queen Charlotte
Image
"Queen Charlotte," a Bridgerton spinoff, features a younger Lady Danbury, played by Arsema Thomas, who is still finding her place in London society. Arsema Thomas was drawn to the opportunity to work with creator Shonda Rhimes, who represents the Black woman narrative in her shows. Thomas, who is not British, faked her accent for her audition, reflecting Lady Danbury's struggle to let her true self out. Both grew into confident women with the support of others.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story features the younger versions of several Bridgerton characters, including Arsema Thomas as a young Lady Agatha Danbury. A prequel spinoff of the popular Netflix period show Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte takes place across two timelines and follows the eponymous queen, played by both Golda Rosheuvel (as seen in Bridgerton) and India Amarteifio as the royal 50 years younger. Among the other characters in the Queen Charlotte cast is Lady Agatha Danbury,...

Arsema Thomas Shares Her Predictions For "Queen Charlotte" Season 2
Image
Image Source: Arsema Thomas / Photo Illustration by Ava Cruz

As fans campaign for a second season of "Queen Charlotte," we're still reeling from season one's incredible performances, namely Arsema Thomas's impressive portrayal of Lady Agatha Danbury. In "Bridgerton," Lady Danbury is an established noblewoman with a reputation for being a natural leader. In the spinoff, however, viewers catch a glimpse at her early life as an aristocrat, including her friendship with Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio), her complex relationship with Lord Danbury (Cyril Nri), and her beginnings as one of the most trusted - and feared - members of the ton.

For Thomas, the prospect of playing such a well-established and beloved character was "extremely scary." But that only made her more eager to do the character justice. "As an actor, you rarely get such a complex and challenging character to play, also specifically as a Black woman," she tells Popsugar.

Cast Of ‘Queen Charlotte,’ The ‘Bridgerton’ Spin-Off, Open Up Show’s Many Sex Scenes
Image
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, a prequel spin-off of the popular Netflix series Bridgerton, tells the story of Queen Charlotte and King George III, a plotline that was hinted at in Season 2 of the parent show. The prequel explores the origin of a young Charlotte (India Amarteifio) during her arranged marriage to George (Corey Mylchreest).

As a Bridgerton series, the central love story, including the sex scenes, is the most important. Amarteifio and Mylchreest said that creating the chemistry between the two characters went smoothly as the royals’ relationship gradually transformed as the show progressed. At first, they only had sex on even days for the sole purpose of creating an heir. But as they grow closer, their relationship becomes more intimate.

Mylchreest thanked intimacy coordinators Lucy Fennell and Lizzie Talbot for their work, noting that Bridgerton had previously received criticism for making gratuitous sex scenes.

‘Queen Charlotte’ Stars Share the Weight of the Crown: ‘All 3 of Us Are Different Poster Children for Duty’
Image
This story about “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” stars India Amarteifio, Corey Mylchreest and Arsema Thomas first appeared in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown in “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” but the actors who star in the show carry the responsibility together.

As the title indicates, “Queen Charlotte” is a spinoff of Netflix’s wildly popular 19th-century period drama created by Shonda Rhimes. The prequel series was under a lot of pressure to follow up the more or less colorblind society established in “Bridgerton” — in addition to living up to the steaminess synonymous with the Regency-era show that’s based on Julia Quinn’s books.

It’s the story of how teenage Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz married King George of England and rose mightily to her royal position. She is played by India Amarteifio, alongside Corey Mylchreest as George...

Sparks Fly for Penelope and Colin in First ‘Bridgerton’ Season 3 Images

Netflix debuted the first “Bridgerton” Season 3 images on Saturday during its fan-centric Tudum event, offering a first look at the new episodes of the wildly popular Netflix series based on Julia Quinn’s books.

Season 3 will deviate from the book series order by skipping Benedict’s love story (the crux of the third book) for that of Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton), which fans are dying to watch.

Season 2 saw Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) fall in love with Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) after first thinking that he should wed her sister Edwina (Charithra Chandran), who was proclaimed the season’s “incomparable.” At the end of Season 1, it was revealed that Penelope is actually Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews), the ton’s gossipmonger that always has something sensational printed on her morning pamphlets.

'Queen Charlotte': Arsema Thomas on Those Uncomfortable Scenes
Image
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story rightfully earned its place amongst romance royalty when it waltzed its way onto screens just weeks ago. A prequel to Netflix's hugely popular regency drama Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte explores the messy but undeniably addictive love story of Princess Charlotte (India Amarteifio) and King George (Corey Mylchreest). Whilst the show undoubtedly earned its rave reviews from audiences and critics alike primarily for its hearty love story, there was a powerful tale of female empowerment pumping through the veins of the show. That is, the story of Lady Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas). Rightfully hailed, the story spotlights the brutal reality of regency life for young women who were often disregarded and seen as mere vehicles for breeding and male satisfaction. The brutal realities were highlighted in a truly unfiltered and difficult-to-watch way during Queen Charlotte, something Thomas felt was particularly important to Lady Danbury's narrative.

How ‘Queen Charlotte’ Star Arsema Thomas Prepared for the Role of Young Lady Danbury: “I Needed to Call Upon the Women in My Life”
Image
Arsema Thomas had not seen the Netflix hit Bridgerton before she sent in an audition tape to play young Lady Agatha Danbury in its prequel series, Queen Charlotte, while doing her master’s degree in fine arts in London. But even without having seen the show that has captivated fans globally, she knew she wanted the role.

“There was something interesting or different about this type of storytelling because it’s clearly grabbing people,” Thomas tells THR. “There was something about the fact that I have never seen a character written like this for a Black woman before. Usually, if she’s supporting the main narrative, she doesn’t have a three-dimensional narrative of her own — she only exists in the realm of the lead. And to see that this woman was just so engaging, so mysterious — but in a way that didn’t detract from her complexity, but rather...

Queen Charlotte Young Agatha Star Details Original Bridgerton Actor's Help On Prequel
Image
Arsema Thomas, who portrays young Lady Danbury in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, details how original actor Adjoa Andoh helped her take on the role. Queen Charlotte premiered on Netflix on May 4 and serves as a prequel/spin-off of the hit Bridgerton series. It focuses on Queen Charlotte, following both her younger self (India Amarteifio) in 1761, when she first marries King George III (Corey Mylchreest), and her older self (Golda Rosheuvel) in 1817, as she searches for an heir. Andoh reprises her Bridgerton role as Lady Danbury, while Thomas was brought on to play the younger version.

In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Thomas shed some light on how Andoh helped her portray Lady Danbury in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Thomas revealed that Andoh helped raise her confidence in her ability to take on the role. Through long discussions, they noticed similarities in their lives and what they believed in,...

Queen Charlotte Editors On Establishing Bridgerton's World & Enhancing Chemistry
Image
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story has been one of Netflix's crown jewels in 2023, quickly rising to the top spot globally and building on the success of its parent series, Bridgerton. The prequel follows a young Charlotte (played by India Amarteifio) and her marriage to King George (Corey Mylchreest), which eventually grows into a beautiful love as they face his mental health crises together. To make way for their match, the Princess Dowager (Michelle Fairley) orchestrates a Great Experiment to elevate wealthy citizens of color to the status of nobility, and the newly-christened Lady Danbury (Arsema Thomas) must fight to maintain her position in the face of personal upheaval.

The world of Bridgerton was well-established in seasons 1 and 2, but Queen Charlotte had the duty of explaining its origins. To achieve a sense of continuity, the prequel series incorporated present-day scenes with Charlotte and other familiar actors, while the creative team...

‘Queen Charlotte’ Star Arsema Thomas on Taking up Space as Lady Danbury and as a Black Queer Actress
Image
When Bridgerton was first released in 2020, Arsema Thomas wanted so badly to be a part of that world she couldn’t even watch the hit Netflix period romance.

“I don’t know what it was, but sometimes when you see something that you want and you see that it’s already come and gone, it’s difficult to sit and enjoy it without thinking of that,” Thomas, 28, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I think that was what was going through my mind, that this would be the perfect thing, the greatest thing… to see that it came and went and I didn’t hear of an audition, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m gutted. I don’t think I can ever watch this.’”

When the actress, who at the time was studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, heard there would be a second season of the Shonda Rhimes hit series,...

How ‘Queen Charlotte’ Musical Minds Alex Patsavas and Kris Bowers Leaned Into Black Artists for the Spin-Off Soundtrack
Image
Like “Bridgerton,” “Queen Charlotte features orchestral covers of modern music, but an original composition by Kris Bowers kicks off the soundtrack during Charlotte and George’s wedding in the first episode.

Bowers co-wrote “A Feeling I’ve Never Been” with Tayla Parx based on the work of Joseph Bologne Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a Creole composer who was one of the first men of color to become known for his compositions, and who also happened to be an excellent fencer (and the subject of the 2022 film “Chevalier.”)

“We looked at a few pieces that inspired us and then came up with this seed of an idea that we then built into this larger piece, and so because we approached it with much more of a songwriting way rather than score, that’s why it belongs with some of those other [soundtrack] songs, but it was part of a larger idea that Alex...

'Queen Charlotte' Star Arsema Thomas on Lady Danbury's Path to Empowerment
Image
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story left audiences screaming and (mostly) crying through its stunning tale of rocky romance through the eyes of strong-headed Princess Charlotte (India Amarteifio) and an emotionally broken King George (Corey Mylchreest). Unsurprisingly, their love story was not without trials and tribulations but the pair proved true love really does conquer all in a tear-jerking finale that concluded with them finding solace in one another as they hide away from the world under their bed. As if the show hadn't already positioned itself in viewers' hearts for a lifetime — whilst simultaneously raising the relationship standard astronomically — it also delved into a powerful story of self-discovery and self-love. Through the eyes of Lady Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas), Queen Charlotte was able to connect with its 21st century audience in a way unlike ever before through the power imbalance Agatha is forced to endure time and time again. Lady...

Newcomers India Amarteifio, Corey Mylchreest and Arsema Thomas portray the younger versions of Queen Charlotte, King George and Lady Danbury, respectively. And of course, Dame Julie Andrews returns to voice our favorite gossipmonger Lady Whistledown.

The "Queen Charlotte" Cast Survived Filming in "One of the Hottest Summers Ever" with "Armpit Pads"
Image
The historical world of "Queen Charlotte" - the first "Bridgerton" spinoff series - is so sumptuous that fans might wish to spend a day there. But the "Queen Charlotte" cast tells us there is one downside to wearing heavy, luxurious costumes on the gorgeous sets: It gets really hot!

"We got one of the hottest summers ever," Sam Clemmett, who plays Young Brimsley, tells Popsugar. One way they beat the heat was by having cooling tents right off set, where they could get a blast of cold air in between takes. Arsema Thomas, who plays young Lady Danbury, says she would have to "take off bits" of her costume when it was "extremely hot," but that the costume department also gave her "arm pit pads" right in her dresses to soak up the sweat. She calls herself a "very sweaty person."

India Amarteifio, who stars as young Queen Charlotte, says...

Image

But as the series jumps between the time of Bridgerton and the story of young Charlotte's (India Ria Amarteifio) arrival in England, it explores a new side of these characters. In particular, Agatha's backstory isn't what fans may expect. Lady Danbury became a fan favorite in Bridgerton for her classy wit and undeniable wisdom, but Queen Charlotte's younger version (Arsema Thomas) has a lot of evolving to do, as so many years before the original series, Agatha has not yet come into her power.

‘Queen Charlotte’ Shows How to Successfully Expand a TV Universe
Image
Netflix’s decision to create an entire prequel about “Bridgerton” breakout Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) may have initially surprised audiences — but the series’ smash-hit success might stir things up as much as its royal protagonist.

In the week since its May 4 premiere, “Queen Charlotte” was watched for 148.28 million hours, becoming the top English-language series on the platform in the U.S. (and entering the top 10 in 91 countries). It scored high with audiences and critics, and the six episodes (including a feature-length finale) were devoured by “Bridgerton” fans around the world, proving the steamy, semi-fictional Regency world to be even more fruitful than expected.

While the initial “Queen Charlotte” announcement surprised many, Netflix made clear from the jump that this was no ordinary spinoff but a top priority, written by “Bridgerton” executive producer Shonda Rhimes. Rhimes’ name is almost inextricable from the televised “Bridgerton” brand, where Chris Van Dusen served as...

Bridgerton Star Under Fire Over 'Terribly White' Coronation Critique
Image
Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh has come under fire for her comments about King Charles' recent coronation.

King Charles' coronation became 2023's most complained-about TV event after viewers criticized Andoh's comments. Per Deadline, Ofcom, a UK media regulator, revealed that fans took issue with Andoh's assessment of the royal family as "terribly white," resulting in 4,165 complaints. During the coronation, Andoh spoke with ITV hosts Julie Etchingham and Tom Bradby, commenting, "We've gone from the rich diversity of the [Westminster] Abbey to a terribly white balcony. I'm very struck by that."

'Queen Charlotte': Lady Danbury & Lord Ledger Prepare for the Ballroom Dance
Image
If Netflix's regency drama Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story has made anything abundantly clear, it is that Lady Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas) is an absolute force to be reckoned with. Although much of the story of Queen Charlotte is centered around the tale of Princess Charlotte (India Amarteifio) and King George's (Corey Mylchreest) magnificent romance, there is a special portion of the tale that has been preserved to explore Agatha's life. One particular aspect is her sensual awakening following the death of her husband and amongst her romances was one shared with Lord Ledger (Keir Charles). As the regal drama graces screens, Netflix has shared a snippet of Thomas and Charles setting the dance floor ablaze.

‘Queen Charlotte’ Gets Crowned a Netflix Hit
Image
Dearest gentle reader: “Queen Charlotte” has been declared a jewel of Netflix’s spring season.

The “Bridgerton” spinoff had a regal first week of streaming, logging 148.28 million hours viewed on Netflix. The streamer announced the viewership numbers via its weekly Top 10 Global English Language TV Show viewership chart, dated May 1-7, which the good Queen unsurprisingly topped at No. 1; the limited series made that ascension with just four days of viewing, after dropping all episodes May 4.

If every viewer who started “Queen Charlotte” finished it during the week, the show would have received roughly 22 million viewers, according to Netflix’s estimates based on the show’s running time. That means the fictionalized King George’s coronation this weekend was likely watched by fewer people compared to that other coronation going on, although it did manage to surpass Charles and Camilla’s UK ratings at the very least.

‘Queen Charlotte’ Star Arsema Thomas on Becoming ‘Badass’ Lady Danbury
Image
[Spoiler Alert: The below contains spoilers from Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story Season 1.] Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story may have shined a light on an earlier chapter in the titular monarch’s life, but it also brought to the forefront Lady Danbury’s (Arsema Thomas) story, one that, up until now, has been shrouded in mystery in the flagship Bridgerton series. And while this series sees Lady Danbury fight for her family’s titles, social status, and more, one thing seems unchanged and that’s the tenacity with which she approaches challenges. “She is so cool, so badass,” Thomas gushes of her character. She portrays the younger version of Lady Danbury (who is still played in the Regency Era by Adjoa Andoh). The difference in this show, Thomas points out, is that Lady Danbury doesn’t know she’s that badass quite yet. “You realize that [she doesn’t] think that about [herself]. [She’s] just trying to hide her ...
