After making the festival rounds for the better part of a year, the found footage / live-stream horror comedy #ChadGetstheAxe, a feature expansion of an award-winning short film with the same title, is now set to receive a digital and VOD release courtesy of The Horror Collective (the genre label of Entertainment Squad) on September 1st. With that date just a couple weeks away, we’ve gotten our hands on the trailer for #ChadGetstheAxe, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Directed by Travis Bible, who wrote the screenplay with Kemerton Hargrove, #ChadGetstheAxe follows four social media influencers as they live-stream their trip to Devil’s Manor, former home to a Satanic Cult. Things don’t go well. And as the violence ramps up… So do the views.

Horror’s technological evolution into Screenlife nightmares like Spree or Deadstream continues with Travis Bible’s #chadgetstheaxe, the latest skewer-happy examination of dangerous social media obsessions. It’s becoming a more challenging subgenre that requires intense authenticity in performances and digital details, especially since actual YouTubers are starting to become parodies of themselves. Bible and co-writer Kemerton Hargrove key into Logan Paul or Shane Dawson-type online personalities and their willingness to — for example — monetize videos that feature actual dead bodies. Found footage is So hard to get right. For every Blair Witch Project we get a myriad of direct-to-dvd (or streaming) shaky-cam horrors that substitute actual filmmaking and crafting real scares for cheap camerawork and a multitude of jump scares. However, in recent years there have been some standouts… Death of a Vlogger, Host, and most recently Deadstream. And now comes #chadgetstheaxe.

The film sees social media influencers Spicy Steve and Chad team up with a pair of beauty tip streamers to visit the supposedly haunted Devil’s Manor, the former home to a Satanic Cult. Things don’t go well. Soon they’re forced to wonder if it’s all a prank created by other streamers, by each other, or if there is something more sinister at hand… And as the violence ramps up…...

Do social media influencers have souls? The film industry really doesn’t seem to think so. So much so that this new generation of streamers, hell bent on pushing their “merch” and driving their “subs” no matter the cost, are almost too perfect as horror movie victims. Who doesn’t want to see Logan Paul pissing himself with fear, while getting chased by a man with a sack for a face?

In fact, it’s such a novel idea that the entire found footage sub-genre seems to have taken a screaming left turn over the past year, to focus on just that; “livestream” screen-life movies where a nasty piece of shit is hunted down by nefarious forces, and we’re all not only allowed, but actively encouraged to clap and cheer whilst they repeatedly soil themselves.
