New to Streaming: Caught by the Tides, Sorry, Baby, Harvest & More
Image
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

Blue Sun Palace (Constance Tsang)

Shot largely on location in Queens, Blue Sun Palace explores a hidden culture and milieu. Amy and Didi, two friends at a massage parlor, are struck by violence that throws their lives into disarray. Director Constance Tsang grew up in New York, which helps explain her script’s authentic feel. Alongside Lee Kang-sheng as a Taiwanese immigrant looking for connection, the real star here is cinematographer Norm Li, who gives the film’s massage parlors, fast-food joints, and convenience stores––all seen in grungy fluorescent lighting––a universal currency that makes just as much sense in Korea or Mexico as in the U.S. – Daniel E.

Bob Trevino Likes It Ending Explained And Full Story: Is Bob Dead Or Alive?
Image
For the opening twenty minutes of Bob Trevino Likes It, you keep wondering if the titular character is going to have a redemption arc at some point. We’re talking about Lily’s dad here, who’s downright insufferable and one of the most punchable characters we’ve seen in a while. The moment the other Bob Trevino, played by John Leguizamo, is introduced, you realize the title of the movie is referring to this Bob, not the other one. And the two Bobs, despite having identical names and being in the same demographic, couldn’t be more opposite. The movie, despite having Bob Trevino in its title, is actually about Euphoria-breakout Barbie Ferreira’s Lily more than anything else. And to think what we see on screen is based on a true story! Yes, the movie actually stems from director Tracie Laymon’s own life experience—of making friends...

‘Euphoria’: Hans Zimmer Joins Labrinth To Score Season 3
Image
Sam Levinson wrote the third season of HBO drama series Euphoria while listening to the scores of Interstellar and True Romance, so it’s apt that he’s brought along the man responsible for the third season.

Hans Zimmer, who scored the movies directed by Christopher Nolan and Tony Scott, respectively, has boarded the third season of Euphoria and will compose the score alongside British musician Labrinth, who scored the first two seasons.

It comes as the third season of the show, which premiered its second season in 2022, is currently in production.

Zendaya returns as Rue Bennett alongside the likes of Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Eric Dane, Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie, Dominic Fike and Maude Apatow. Colman Domingo returns as a guest star with Martha Kelly and Chloe Cherry upped to series regulars alongside fresh faces including Rosalía, Marshawn Lynch, Kadeem Hardison, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Toby Wallace. Beloved Euphoria Star Doubled Down on Season 3 Exit Rumors
Image
Euphoria is one of HBO's biggest shows, but the much-delayed Season 3 will feature a major cast shakeup. The series premiered in 2019 and has yet to confirm a release date for Season 3.

Production on the third and final season was delayed several times, as creator Sam Levinson focused first on his show The Idol, and then wanted to make sure the quality of the final season was impeccable. That led to multiple exits. In a new Instagram Story, per Men's Journal, beloved star Nika King confirmed she is not returning to the show.

King played Leslie Bennett in the first two seasons, Rue and Gia's mother, who struggled with her daughter's addiction. The psychological teen drama follows the lives of several teenagers, and it's centered around Zendaya's Rue. King was an integral part of the show, but she previously confirmed that she will not appear in the upcoming season.

Earlier this year,...

Why Gina Torres Left Suits After Six Seasons
Image
There are many reasons for an actor to leave a popular show or an interesting project. Charle Barnett's Peter Mills was written out of "Chicago Fire" to make room for other characters. Barbie Ferreira left "Euphoria" because her character Kat Hernandez had limited storyline options left.

Sometimes, the departure of a star whom fans saw as key to a show's popularity might be a simple contract issue. For instance, Regé-Jean Page's Simon Basset left "Bridgerton" simply because his contract was up and the esteemed Duke of Hastings opted to go explore other things. A similar thing happened with Gina Torres, who starred in the USA Network legal drama "Suits" as Jessica Pearson for six seasons before departing the show in 2016. In an interview with The New York Times, Torres confirmed that her exit was the simple matter of her contract ending:

"My contract was up, so this wasn't a...

Levack is a writer-director whose critically acclaimed coming-of-age dramedy I Like Movies premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2022. Russell Crowe, Barbie Ferreira Honoured at Valletta’s Golden Bees
Eya Bellagha and Slim Baccar in Where the Wind Comes From (2025)
The Mediterrane Film Festival drew to a close on Sunday night with Tunisian-French road drama Where the Wind Comes From taking the Golden Bee for best feature. The prize capped a nine-day showcase that organisers said welcomed 55 films from more than 20 countries across the archipelago.

Director Amel Guellaty’s debut also secured best performance for lead actor Eya Bellaga, while Spain’s Julio Medem collected both best screenplay and the jury’s choice award for his post-Civil-War drama 8.

Industry honours dominated the gala: Oscar-winner Russell Crowe accepted the Malta Film Legend award, returning to the island where he shot Gladiator two decades ago. “If you want to know what I love about Malta, it’s everything — twenty-six years ago I became a man here,” he told the audience.

The Lifetime Achievement Golden Bee went to British producer Jeremy Thomas, while Euphoria breakout Barbie Ferreira received the festival’s inaugural Rising Star trophy,...

Mediterrane Film Festival wraps its third edition with fireworks, arias and Russell Crowe
Image
Fireworks, opera arias, dancers, a show-stopping turn from UK singer Emeli Sandé, smutty jokes from emcee David Walliams, and a rabble-rousing speech from Gladiator star Russell Crowe were among the highlights of a lavish and somewhat protracted closing ceremony of the third edition of the Mediterrane Film Festival (June 21-29).

At the event, which took place on the island of Fort Manoel, the filmmakers themselves were inevitably eclipsed by the performers and presenters.

Nonetheless, the festival itself, which had opened last weekend with an open-air screening of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, boasted strong attendances and a diverse range of films.

Russell Crowe Remembers Shooting ‘Gladiator’ at Mediterrane Film Festival’s Festive Awards Ceremony: ‘In Malta I Became a Man’
Image
Russell Crowe made a surprise appearance at the Mediterrane Film Festival’s Golden Bee Awards on Sunday night, returning to the island where he shot “Gladiator” more than two decades ago.

“If you want to know what I love about Malta, it’s everything,” said Crowe, who was given the Malta Film Legend Award. “26 years ago, in a funny way, I became a man in Malta,” he said, “For whatever films I had done before then, nothing had the majesty, ambition and budget and ultimately reach of ‘Gladiator.’ It wasn’t an easy production. I had to fight every day for the integrity of the character I was playing — just like the journey of the character himself in the movie. And sometimes, you get lucky enough to make something that resonates with people.”

Crowe told a story about a young man who asked him for a photo last week while he was traveling in Italy.

Why Everyone Is Talking About Malta Right Now
Image
If you follow actors (Josh Gad, Millie Bobby Brown, Anna Camp, Gregg Sulkin, Chris Perfetti or Barbie Ferreira), filmmakers (Jon Watts, Jake Schreier, Catherine Hardwicke or Andrew Ahn), production executives (from Amazon, A24, Universal/Focus Features, HBO/Max, Searchlight or Arclight Films) or journalists (from THR, Variety, Ankler, Screen Daily or Cosmopolitan) on Instagram, chances are you’ve seen images of Malta in recent days.

That’s the goal of Johann Grech, who serves as Malta Film commissioner and CEO of Malta Film Studios. The man is at the center of the Mediterrane Film Festival, which ran on the island nation from June 21-29. And while it served as a showcase of international cinema, it’s just as much a promotional tool to attract projects to Malta, which this year is celebrating a 100th anniversary of hosting international productions and toasting a rich 40 percent tax rebate incentive to keep cameras rolling in 2025 and beyond.

Cameron Bailey On TIFF World Premiere Title ‘Mile End Kicks’ & Why The Festival Is Now Focused On “Celebrating Canada”
Image
Exclusive: “We are all about celebrating Canada right now,” TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey explains on a Zoom call with us ahead of his festival’s latest lineup announcement this morning.

“But only in the sense that I’m very focused on how Canadian stories speak to the whole world. There is a thriving culture that I think is somewhat unique to Canadian cinema because it is supported by public bodies. Nearly all Canadian cinema is independent cinema, unlike some countries with big commercial industries.”

Mile End Kicks, the sophomore feature from Toronto native Chandler Levack (I Like Movies), is one of those independently produced titles set to come out of Canada this year, and it was included as a world premiere in this morning’s TIFF announcement. Levack joined us on the call with Bailey.

Written and directed by Levack, the film follows a 24-year-old female music critic who moves...

'The Legend of Zelda' Movie Reportedly Wants Hunter Schafer as Princess Zelda
Image
When it comes to video game movies, The Legend of Zelda is easily among the most anticipated, and the titular character might have been cast. Despite The Legend of Zelda typically following the hero Link, the series is named after Princess Zelda, the Hylian princess of the kingdom of Hyrule and the bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom. The feature film adaptation, set to be directed by Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball, is slated for release on Mar. 26, 2027, meaning casting is about to pick up.

Scooper Daniel Richtman, via Game Fragger, says that Hunter Schafer is being eyed to play the role of Zelda. Schafer is best known for her role as Jules Vaughn on the HBO series Euphoria. Her other credits include Kinds of Kindness, The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Cuckoo. Neither Nintendo nor Sony Pictures has commented on the rumored casting choice.

Charli xcx pitches a Final Destination sequel with an “It Girl” cast
Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Seann William Scott, Kerr Smith, Amanda Detmer, and Chad Donella in Final Destination (2000)
After a 14 year hiatus, the Final Destination franchise returned this year with Final Destination: Bloodlines – and movie-goers were clearly missing these movies, as Bloodlines has so far pulled in $193 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing entry in the franchise. One fan of the series is singer/songwriter Charli xcx, who took to TikTok to share her pitch for the next sequel, one that she envisions starring in alongside several “It Girl” actresses.

Charli xcx said (with thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for the transcription), “I’m rewatching all of the Final Destination movies, in preparation to see Final Destination: Bloodlines, which I’m really excited to see. The reason I love these movies is that they really just are about hot people getting killed. You know, there’s no moral backbone to the story, it really is just, ‘They’re hot, they’re cursed and they deserve to die.

Sweeney Calls “Euphoria” Season 3 ‘Unhinged’ as Cameras Roll
Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney’s claim that “Euphoria” season three will be “unhinged” has reignited debate around a series that has not aired new episodes since February 2022. In an interview cited by Empire, the actor said she and creator Sam Levinson kept pushing Cassie Howard “crazier,” calling the fresh scripts the wildest work they have shared so far.

Production has finally resumed in Los Angeles after repeated delays linked to the 2023 labour strikes, the death of cast member Angus Cloud and scheduling conflicts for its high-profile ensemble. Filming began in early February, according to an updated timeline published by Elle, yet Warner Bros. Discovery now forecasts a 2026 premiere instead of the earlier 2025 slot, giving the creative team extra room to retool the eight-episode run.

Colman Domingo, who plays Rue’s sponsor Ali, recently defended the pace, explaining that Levinson is continuing to rewrite in response to real-world events and existential questions the story hopes to address.

Bob Trevino Likes It (2024) Movie Review: An Emotional Healing Personal Tale of a Found Family
Image
Indie films, especially the new wave of Western independent cinema, often possess a rare ability to capture deeply human stories in raw, intimate ways. They can leave us haunted, reflective, and profoundly moved—particularly when they explore pain that feels achingly real. Tracie Laymon’s Bob Trevino Likes It (2024) is one such story. Based on Laymon’s own experiences, this quietly powerful drama unfolds with emotional honesty, capturing the ache of abandonment and the longing for connection in a uniquely poetic manner.

The story follows Lily Trevino (Barbie Ferreira), a twenty-something caretaker for Daphne (Lauren Spencer). Broke, depressed, and starved for love—especially from her estranged father—Lily yearns for a connection that seems forever out of reach. Her biological father, Robert “Bob” Trevino (French Stewart), has emotionally shut her out. He refuses to acknowledge her as his daughter and is more invested in online dating than reconciliation. In a moment of vulnerability,...

Bob Trevino Likes It review – Barbie Ferreira lovebombs us all in quirk-fuelled comedy
Barbie Ferreira
Ferreira is charm personified in this drama about a young woman who becomes friends with a man who has the same name as her louse of a father

This low-budget, low-key comedy-drama is a little saccharine at times, especially in the final stretch, but it’s hard to fully resist its charm offensive. It wages an aggressive lovebombing campaign led by very likable lead Barbie Ferreira who shines as put-upon but good-hearted Lily, a home-help assistant first met bawling her eyes out when a misaddressed text reveals that the guy she’s been dating has cheated on her. Instead of following her (natural) first instinct to chew him out, she just chokes down her anger and texts “no problem!” in response to his feeble apology. Soon, it becomes clear that this is poor Lily’s usual modus operandi, especially when it comes to her louse of a father, Bob Trevino...

'Euphoria's Barbie Ferreira Teases 'Faces of Death' Remake Also Starring Charlie Xcx
Image
Barbie Ferreira has certainly spread her Hollywood wings ever since Euphoria dropped on HBO. Fans might still remember her as Kat Hernandez from the hit series, even if Ferreira exited the show following Season 2. In recent years, Ferreira has dabbled in a number of horror projects, from Nope (2022) to House of Spoils (2024). And the list goes on, with Ferreira leading the charge in an upcoming remake of a '70s movie that was once marketed as being "banned in 46 countries." The Ballad of Wallis Island (James Griffiths)

You know when you hear a song and it transports you back to an era or a memory or a moment? It’s this involuntary mental reflex that can be marvelous, painful, or some combination of the two; all intensified by the emotion of the music that triggers it. This familiar phenomenon provides the backbeat for The Ballad of Wallis Island, a comedy that envelops you in its charm while plucking a serenade on your heartstrings. The film itself is an evocation of a memory for writers/stars Tim Key & Tom Basden and director James Griffiths––a feature shot in eighteen days based on a short film they made eighteen years ago. – Kent W. Charli xcx to star in and produce the next Takashi Miike film
Charli XCX
Singer/songwriter Charli xcx is working on building up her film acting career, and she’s going about it in a really interesting way. A couple of years ago, we heard that she was set to make her feature acting debut with Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death… and someday we might even get to see that movie, but as of right now it still doesn’t have a distributor. Since working on Faces of Death, Charli xcx has taken roles in the Gregg Araki thriller I Want Your Sex, Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist, Romain Gavras’s Sacrifice, Jeremy O. Harris and Pete Ohs’ Erupjca, and Julia Jackman’s graphic novel adaptation 100 Nights of Hero. By taking on these projects, she has worked alongside the likes of Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Jermaine Fowler, Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jenna Ortega,...

Charli xcx is one of the most famous pop stars in the world right now, but she's about to transition to the world of film with multiple projects currently in development. The most recent news regarding her budding acting career is perhaps the most exciting yet, as Variety reports that Charli xcx will star in and produce an upcoming film from the legendary Japanese horror director Takashi Miike, best known for films like Audition and Ichi the Killer.

Little is known about the story thus far, but horror fans know that Miike is famous for the graphic violence present in his movies. Audition is often ranked as one of the most disturbing horror movies of all time. Ross Evans (How to Save a Marriage) will write the script.

The Brat singer is also starring in and producing an upcoming A24 movie, The Moment, through her Studio365 banner. The Moment is...

Barbie Ferreira & John Leguizamo in 'Bob Trevino Likes It' Trailer #2
Image
"Just because I'm not your father doesn't mean we can't be friends." Vertigo Releasing has revealed one more official trailer for the film titled Bob Trevino Likes It, made by indie filmmaker Tracie Laymon. It already opened last month and we posted a trailer earlier this year - but it deserves more attention. This first premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival last year, and it also played at Seattle, Melbourne, Newport Beach, Nashville, Mill Valley, and Denver Film Festivals, and many others. Bob Trevino Likes It is inspired by the true friendship that writer-director Tracie Laymon found with a stranger when looking for her father online. Often being the caretaker to people like her father who should be caring for her, Lily Trevino longs for a familial connection, having been abandoned by her mother as a child, then suddenly by her father in her 20s. When she accidentally befriends a...

Bob Trevino
Interview: Barbie Ferreira, John Leguizamo, and Tracie Laymon talk Bob Trevino Likes It
Bob Trevino
Stepping into Bob Trevino Likes It, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had not watched any trailers, but the premise looked intriguing. And frankly, this flick moved me. In the semi-autobiographical feature, Barbie Ferreira portrays Lily Trevino, a young woman with an incredibly toxic relationship with her father (an excellent performance from French Stewart). When he “blocks her” and refuses to take her calls, she desperatly searches for his Facebook account. She finds Bob Trevino. Just not the one she expected.

Recently, I sat down with the talent to talk about the new film. I was especially impressed with Tracie Laymon. The filmmaker was incredibly gracious and a joy to talk to. She opened up about the story behind the film, and how she approached bits of her life into the fictionalized account.

Sitting down with Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo was also quite enjoyable. The two give...

Tracie Laymon's feature début, Bob Trevino Likes It, draws on the personal experience of a friendship she struck up online with a stranger. The story follows Lily Trevino (Barbie Ferreira), who, after her father, Robert Trevino (French Stewart) expels her from his life, tries to connect with him online. Only, the person she tries to 'friend' isn't her father, but Bob Trevino (John Leguizamo), a married but lonely construction company manager. When he senses a kindred spirit in Lily, the two strike up a friendship that offers the connection they're both desperately searching for.

Laymon's previous credits include her 2007 début short, Worse, about a teenager who must reckon with a failed suicide attempt, and Up, from the same year, which follows a 17-year-old, who, fed up with her father and boyfriend, uses fantasy as an escape.

Shailene Woodley Joins Hulu’s ‘Paradise’ For Season 2
Image
Exclusive: Paradise is adding a high-profile cast member. Shailene Woodley has been tapped for a major recurring role in the upcoming second season of Hulu’s breakout political thriller from creator Dan Fogelman and 20th Television.

No one would comment, but I hear Woodley’s heavy arc is tied to Agent Xavier Collins’ (Sterling K. Brown) mission teed off at the end of the Season 1 finale, with Woodley playing a prominent survivor. Filming on Season 2 is currently underway.

Season 1 of Paradise is streaming on Hulu in the U.S., where it regularly ranked at No. 1 throughout its run, and Disney+ internationally. It will get a full broadcast run on sibling ABC beginning April 7 in the Monday 10 p.m. hour.

Paradise’s well-reviewed first season is set in a serene community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals. But the tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs, and a high-stakes investigation unfolds.

Magazine Dreams starring Jonathan Majors is eyeing an estimated $700k weekend in 815 theaters, solid in NY, LA and a handful of urban markets but below the $1 million Deadline hears the distributor had initially been hoping for given strong engagement online with the film, which has a 91% verified audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (81% with critics).

The opening weekend miss for what was a very buzzy Sundance title back in 2023 about a troubled but ambitious bodybuilder follows controversy around its star and comes at a tough time for indie films in general. In the months after the film premiered in Park City, Majors was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment against an ex-girlfriend.

John Leguizamo Rules Out a John Wick Return After Being “Cut Out” of ‘Chapter 2’ [Exclusive]
Image
The gears are in motion for a fifth John Wick movie, despite the character's seeming demise at the end of the fourth film. However, whether Keanu Reeves returns or not, there's one character you probably won't see in a future John Wick film. In an interview with Collider's Aidan Kelley for his new critically acclaimed movie Bob Trevino Likes It, legendary star John Leguizamo stated that his character, auto mechanic Aurelio, likely won't be back for another round.

Says Leguizamo, of the possibility of a return to the blockbuster action franchise:

Yeah…Well… I mean, I was cut out of 2, so I was not the happiest camper. I had a whole backstory and everything, but I don't want to get into all that.

On the suggestion that he could return Wick's car after being absent from the franchise since the second film, Leguizamo was very clear:

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.
