No matter how you look at it, life is just unfair. Bad people do bad things, but they blame others and go on to live in peace. Good people, on the other hand, beat themselves up about the smallest things.

“I...

‘Squid Game’ Arrives in L.A. With Real-Life Challenges and (Literal) Race for Premiere Tickets
Image
Netflix is not holding back when it comes to the return of Squid Game, the streamer’s biggest show of all time, as it held an immersive premiere and fan event in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The night’s biggest component, though, was a nearly 5K run, as hundreds of fans — outfitted in the show’s green tracksuits — attempted to win tickets to the night’s premiere screening by correctly completing challenges along the route.

“I can’t believe I’m watching this moment,” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told the crowd as he looked out on the sea of costumed guests. “Thank you for coming to the event and celebrating Squid Game season two together.

The second season of the global smash-hit Netflix series picks up three years after the first, which is the same length of time between seasons, as Player 456 scratches his plans to settle in the United States. Our hero also ditches the red dye in his hair, a small but helpful cosmetic change as the new baddie of the bunk beds has purple hair. How do we know the purple-haired contestant is a bad guy? Just see what dude does during Red Light, Green Light.

“Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won,” the “Squid Game 2” synopsis reads.

Roush Review: Mean Girls Go to War in ‘Pyramid Game’
Image
The stakes in South Korea’s Pyramid Game may not be quite as high as in the infamous Squid Game, but try telling that to the tormented adolescents subjected to shame and violent bullying in this gripping though seriously bloated melodrama, based on a webtoon. “School is a smaller version of society” is an oft-repeated theme, a lesson soon learned by spunky Su-ji (Kim Ji-yeon), the new arrival in a corporate-funded girls’ high school who tells herself, “You need to figure out who’ll be beneficial to you or not, and find your place among all the kids, so that you don’t crash land at the top or the bottom.” Unfortunately, she gets seated next to a gentle outcast, the sullen and remote Ja-eun (Ryu Da-in), in a classroom that inexplicably is located in its own building, away from prying eyes as a savage game of toxic peer pressure is enacted.

The Perfect K-Drama To Watch Before Squid Game Season 2 Adds A Dark Twist To The High School Genre
Image
Pyramid Game, a dark high school K-drama, follows in Squid Game's footsteps with a brutal take on social hierarchy and bullying dynamics. Similar to Squid Game, Pyramid Game features a cruel game of survival that reflects on Korean society's issues, especially bullying problems. While both shows share a focus on unfair playing fields and money as a driving force, Pyramid Game differs by allowing characters to impact their own fate.

Squid Game has led the way for a wave of new K-dramas that continue to follow in its footsteps, including one that puts a dark spin on the high school genre. Thanks to Squid Games record-setting success, Netflix is producing more Korean content than ever and Netflixs 2024 K-drama releases look to be more exciting than ever. Other platforms such as Prime Video and Disney+ have also begun to adopt this strategy and create new content for their own platforms.

Final Primetime Emmy Predictions: ‘Abbott Elementary’ and ‘Squid Game’ Set to Make History, ‘The White Lotus’ Projected to Lead
Image
“Abbott Elementary” just might do it. After winning for casting, the ABC hit freshman sitcom could make history in many significant ways. After Quinta Brunson made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for comedy series, acting and writing categories in the same year, she would be only the second Black person ever to win as a producer in the comedy series. The first was Winifred Hervey for “The Golden Girls” back in 1987. Also, forecast to go along with the top category a win for writing (Brunson would be the third Black person after Larry Wilmore for “The Bernie Mac Show” in 2002 and Lena Waithe for “Master of None” in 2017) and Sheryl Lee Ralph in supporting actress (she would be the second Black woman to win the category after Jackee Harry for “227” in 1987).

Let’s be clear, I’m aware I may be “overthinking much of this,...
