Long before Gary Clark Jr. jammed with Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, and Foo Fighters, and headlined festivals all across the globe, he was an unknown, unsigned blues guitarist in his hometown of Austin, Texas, desperate to make a name for himself. On Sept. 24, 2004, when he was just 20, Clark found himself onstage at Antone’s Nightclub playing the blues standard “Catfish Blues” on a bill that also included Double Trouble, James Cotton, and Jimmie Vaughan.

Your favorite indie duo is back: Waxahatchee has enlisted Mj Lenderman for a cover of Lucinda Williams’ “Abandoned.”
Katie Crutchfield and Lenderman take Williams’ slow-burning rocker — from her 1988 self-titled album — and strip it down even further, trading verses and harmonizing on the chorus. The cover appears on Crutchfield’s new EP Apple Music Nashville Sessions, where Lenderman and producer Brad Cook also appear. The EP is rounded out by two renditions from her recent album Tigers Blood: her Lenderman duet “Right Back to It” and “Burns Out at Midnight.”

Deer Tick have announced their new album, Emotional Contracts, out June 16th as their debut on Ato Records. They’ve also expanded their 2023 tour (grab tickets here) and shared the lead single, “Forgiving Ties,” alongside album track “The Real Thing.”
Emotional Contracts was produced by Dave Fridmann, who is best known for his work with The Flaming Lips, Spoon, and Sleater-Kinney. The 10-track LP includes a feature from Steve Berlin of Los Lobos and background vocals from Courtney Marie Andrews, Vanessa Carlton, Kam Franklin, Angela Miller, and Sheree Smith.
In a statement, vocalist/guitarist John McCauley described letting loose during the recording process. “This time we wanted to see what it would feel like to let go a bit,” he said. “We figured that the songs were strong enough to stand on their own two feet, so whatever we put them through would just make them stronger and take us in some new direction.

When Dave Hause and his brother and collaborator Tim decided to write “Your Ghost” in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, they knew they had to get it just right. Two white guys from Philly writing about racial injustice and police brutality could land with a thud. So Hause “vetted it fiercely,” sending their song to an array of black voices to get their feedback, from fellow artists to a professor of anthropology at Temple University.

When Pete Shapiro co-founded the youth voter registration non-profit HeadCount in 2004, he hoped to merge his twin passions: live music and political activism. “The idea,” says the music industry veteran, “was to use shows, festivals, arena concerts and club gigs to reach people, get them activated, engaged and registered.”
Fifteen years later, Shapiro, the concert promoter (Fare thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of the Grateful Dead) and owner of esteemed New York venues like Brooklyn Bowl and the Capitol Theatre, has been named the non-profit’s Chairman of the Board of Directors.
