One of the many reasons Xo, Kitty is all the rage is because K-culture fans get to live their Korean fantasies through Kitty Song Covey’s story. This includes, but isn’t limited to, being surrounded by beautiful Korean people, experiencing the culture, and living your life to a K-pop soundtrack. You know I needed something to get into the topic of today’s discussion! Anyway, while a lot of the music on the show is quite random, some of it is very strategically placed specifically with context to the show. Of course, that one Enhypen song is the most obvious choice for this season, almost like it was specifically written to shine in this moment. But, leaving that aside, I thought this would be a great opportunity to inspect something that doesn’t need inspecting and try to put reason to something that’s perfectly wholesome by itself, just because I can.

Xo, Kitty season 2 is just as eventful as the first season. Kitty gets a chance to return to Kiss despite all her previous mistakes thanks to Yuri. Yuri, her big crush, the (current) love of her life. Season 1 left us off with a massive cliffhanger where Min-Ho, Kitty’s ex, Dae’s best friend, told her he was in love with her on the flight back home. While that time it seemed super romantic and all that, it ended up being not so lovely after all because Kitty immediately rejects him, and Min-Ho goes back to business class to ruminate on his first-ever rejection. Despite my obsession with K-dramas and K-culture as a whole, I was never truly interested in Netflix’s To All The Boys I Loved Before spin-off series, Xo Kitty. Already I didn’t quite like those movies, because at the time it felt like teen media had just completely stagnated. But, to my surprise, even with all of its cringe, I did quite enjoy Xo Kitty, even more than the movies it came from and more than most of the lovey-dovey teen stuff out there right now. I think what made the show so compelling was how self-aware it was, and of course, it’s the parasocial relationship with the cast that pushes these shows to become super successful and then be forgotten when a new show comes our way.
