One Petty Black Mirror Theory Says Maria Got Burned Because She Stayed Arrogant
Image
Black Mirror recently released another mind-bending season with one episode in particular catching fans’ attention, Episode 2, Bête Noire. Revolving around Maria, a research and development food scientist, and her former classmate, Verity, the story caught fans’ attention the most, as it involved a time-traveling quantum pendant in Verity’s tangled plot of revenge against Maria.

However, while many may consider Maria a victim of Verity’s in the highly divisive episode, some argue that Maria was not simply a victim of Verity’s timeline-hopping chaos; she sealed her own fate by clinging to her pride, claiming that the real cause of her downfall was not Verity’s technology, but Maria’s refusal to move on, apologize, or even acknowledge her past?

Black Mirror Fan Theory: Verity Only Ruined Maria’s Life Because She Never Apologized

Netflix’s Best Black Mirror Episode Proves Victims Can Still Be the Villains
Image
Netflix’s Black Mirror has been an allegory of human emotions, where each episode is a standalone narrative masterpiece. This makes the show all the more interesting, making us watch any episode to our liking, but each episode will perfectly showcase the elements of disbelief, with concepts that reel you in for one more story.

One such tale is from Season 7’s best episode, Bête Noire, which has been heavily misunderstood. Originally, the tale made waves across the internet for its racial undertones, but something about the Netflix Original seemed disturbing, hiding the real fact of how victimhood and villainy have a very thin line that often gets blurred.

Black Mirror Season 7: Bête Noire Deviated Viewers from Its Real Issue

Netflix‘s Black Mirror has been one of the most important TV shows of our generation, where Season 7, Episode 2, titled “Bête Noire,” has been one of the most streamed episodes of the series.

How Black Mirror Creator Charlie Brooker Really Feels About Netflix's Feedback
Image
In "Black Mirror" fan circles, the series is often discussed as if there are two different shows: the British Channel 4 "Black Mirror" and the American Netflix "Black Mirror." Some fans insist that something crucial was lost the moment "Black Mirror" was bought by Netflix, that the dastardly American streaming service ruined all the things that made the show so special.

While Netflix has certainly done a lot of terrible things over the years (like removing "Bandersnatch"), it is not the reason for all those changes in the show's tone and approach. The longer runtimes, the happier endings, the celebrity castings -- these are only Netflix's fault in the sense that they gave showrunner Charlie Brooker the budget and creative freedom to make them happen.

"Netflix, it pains me to say, has not really ever given me a dumb note," Brooker explained in an April 2025 interview, "Which is almost annoying...

‘Black Mirror’ Sets Emmy Campaigns for Paul Giamatti, Rashida Jones, Cristin Milioti and More (Exclusive)
Image
Netflix has a strong Emmy hand to play this TV awards season, positioning the seventh season of its flagship anthology series “Black Mirror” for a major awards run — and this time, the dystopian drama might be among its most formidable contenders yet.

Confirmed exclusively to Variety, the streamer is submitting three standout performances for lead acting honors in the limited or anthology series or TV movie categories: Paul Giamatti for the melancholic and moving “Eulogy,” and Chris O’Dowd and Rashida Jones for their resonant turns in the sociopolitical two-hander “Common People.” It’s a bold push that signals high hopes for a season already being hailed as a return to form — and possibly the series’ strongest outing since its Emmy-winning heyday.

Giamatti’s performance as Phillip, a solitary man navigating grief through digital means in “Eulogy,” has generated both tears and buzz. The 46-minute episode explores the ethics of AI-driven memorials,...

Black Mirror Tricks Viewers with 2 Versions of Season 7 Episode
Image
This article contains Major Spoilers for Black Mirror Season 7, Episode 2, "Bête Noire".

Fans have been watching two versions of Black Mirror's "Bête Noire" without knowing it. It's a smart play on a popular urban myth, causing quite a stir on the internet.

Black Mirror fans just realized they've been hoodwinked. An X user shared screenshots of a scene from Season 2's "Bête Noire", alleging Netflix has been streaming alternate versions of the episode to audiences. This isn't the first time the show has gone full meta: "Bandersnatch" was interactive, "Nosedive" criticized social media, and "Joan Is Awful" poked fun at streaming services. "Bête Noire" toyed with the Mandela Effect, a supposed phenomenon where large groups of people remember different versions of the same event.

So my friend and I were watching the new Black Mirror episode “Bête Noire” and we noticed that there was a stark difference between our episodes…...

All 34 ‘Black Mirror’ episodes ranked, including ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’ and ‘Eulogy’
Image
Every new season of Black Mirror launches a feverish debate over which episode was the best. Emmy voters gave three consecutive Best TV Movie awards to "San Junipero" (2017), "USS Callister" (2018), and "Bandersnatch" (2019), but how does the entire fandom rate the best and worst installments? We've consulted the cumulative IMDb scores for all seasons and have come up with the definitive ranking of Black Mirror episodes. Can you guess the No. 1 choice?

Season 7 was released in April 2025 and brought the total number of episodes and specials to 34. Created by Charlie Brooker, the sci-fi anthology series began on the U.K.'s Channel 4 in 2011 before moving to Netflix (and becoming a worldwide phenomenon) in 2016. The show took a four-year break after Season 5, thanks in part to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, but that just gave people even more time to relive their favorite episodes from the beginning.

Black Mirror season 7 | Netflix releases two versions of episode 2
Black Mirror (2011)
As if the new season of Black Mirror wasn’t mind-boggling enough, Netflix has released two different versions of episode 2, Bête Noire.

Warning! Contains spoilers for Black Mirror season 7 episode 2, Bête Noire.

Charlie Brooker returned to the world of Black Mirror, his tech-dystopian anthology series, with a new season which has been streaming on Netflix for just under a week at the time of writing. Black Mirror season 7 took us to a virtual, 1940s film set, inside a video game and had us ponder if we’d upgrade to a more expensive subscription deal to have our brain damaged spouse stop spouting ads during sex.

But it’s episode 2, titled Bête Noire, that people can’t seem to stop talking about. The episode follows Siena Kelly’s Maria, a food researcher at a chocolate company, who begins to doubt her reality after an old school mate Verity (Rosy McEwen) joins the company.

'Black Mirror' Season 7 Has Fans Arguing About Bernies or Barnies Chicken
Image
If you’ve watched the new season of Netflix's Black Mirror, then you already know that the second episode, "Bête Noire," is one that definitely hits home in this day and age where the Mandela effect seems very real. It appears as if creator Charlie Brooker and company have taken things one step further by releasing different versions of the episode that not only gaslights its star, but the fans as well.

Focusing on Siena Kelly's Maria, "Bête Noire" is about a culinary researcher who encounters strange things after an old classmate begins working at her office. That's putting it mildly, as Maria's reality seems to completely shift thanks to Verity (Rosy McEwen), as she remembers things one way, but they turn out to be different, slowly driving her insane. Things first start going downhill when the name of a chicken franchise is changed from Bernies to Barneys,...

Rosy McEwen Says Playing Verity in ‘Black Mirror’ Was a Study in Petty Revenge
Rosy McEwen
Rosy McEwen, who stars in the Black Mirror Season 7 episode “Bête Noire,” says her performance as Verity was shaped by a single comment from creator Charlie Brooker that redefined her approach to the character.

The episode follows Maria (Siena Kelly), an ambitious executive at a chocolate company, whose world begins to shift after a former classmate, Verity, appears during a product tasting and later joins her team. What begins as a psychological standoff grows stranger as Verity reveals a device that enables movement between parallel realities. The escalating conflict between them is driven by Verity’s long-held grudge.

“It’s silly and ridiculous and wild,” McEwen said about the episode. “It’s unnerving and weird, but it’s wonderful and campy and over the top.” McEwen said that she and Kelly initially approached the material with a detailed, character-driven mindset—until Brooker stepped in with a more direct interpretation.

‘Black Mirror’ Star Rosy McEwen Reveals What Charlie Brooker Told Her to Help Make Sense of Her Episode: “It Released Everything”
Image
[This story contains major spoilers for season seven, episode two of Black Mirror, “Bête Noire.”]

Charlie Brooker is back and doing what he does best — messing with parallel universes.

That’s the case, at least, in Netflix’s shiny new season of Black Mirror. In the season seven episode “Bête Noire,” we follow Siena Kelly (Domino Day, Temple) as confectionary whizz Maria. She works as a high-flying development executive at a chocolate company, but things start to go awry when a woman she knew at school, Verity (Rosy McEwen), shows up for a focus group tasting session.

Maria is unsettled further when McEwen’s character, a computer genius, joins her team at work. Everyone else appears to adore Verity, but Maria is more suspicious. As she begins to lose her mind — facts she long-believed to be true are contorted without explanation — Verity is revealed to have made a device capable of transferring her and Maria to parallel universes. The truth is entirely at her will,...

‘Black Mirror’: Charlie Brooker Reveals Which Season 7 Ending Sums Up His Feelings About the Future
Image
[This story contains some spoilers for Black Mirror season seven.]

You could say Charlie Brooker is going back to basics with the seventh season of Black Mirror. After experimenting with things like interactive movie Bandersnatch and “Red Mirror” horror last season, the creator-writer of the hit Netflix series says he wanted to go back to the Black Mirror formula of sorts.

“You’ve got human beings and then some form of miraculous technology is introduced into their lives that upends it,” says Brooker about the theme of the new episodes. If you haven’t figured it out by now, technology isn’t the bad guy in Brooker’s stories: humans are, as is proven by many of the characters in the six new episodes, which include the first-ever Black Mirror sequel, “USS Callister: Into Infinity.” The endings range from bleak to unnerving to sentimental and victorious, with one that can be debated as hopeful or bleak,...

Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Black Mirror” Season 7, Episode 2.

“Black Mirror” Season 7, Episode 2, titled “Běte Noire,” plays with reality to the point of madness.

The episode follows Maria (Siena Kelly), a confectionary prodigy whose professional success derails when Verity (Rosy McEwan) — a girl she knew in high school who was ruthlessly bullied — pops up and takes a research assistant position. From there things go downhill as Maria starts to get sure facts wrong left and right, and the person to constantly point out her mistakes is Verity.

Her former high school classmate seems to have a way to change realities and Maria is the only person aware of it happening. This begins to drive her mad and paranoid as she digs into Verity’s past.

Here’s how “Běte Noire” comes to an end and just how Verity’s reality-bending tech works.

The ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 episodes ranked, from worst to first
Image
Season 7 of Black Mirror dropped April 10 on Netflix after a two-year break. English showrunner Charlie Brooker wrote or cowrote all of the episodes, as usual. He's a five-time Emmy winner for writing and producing "San Junipero" in 2017, writing and producing "USS Callister" in 2018, and producing "Bandersnatch" in 2019. He received a sixth career Emmy nomination last year for writing "Joan Is Awful," but lost to Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer).

Speaking of "Bandersnatch" and "USS Callister," Season 7 marks the first time Black Mirror has revisited previous storylines in the form of cameo and a sequel, respectively. Will Poulter's computer programmer character Colin Ritman was featured in the interactive "Bandersnatch" and now returns with a small role in "Plaything." Meanwhile, "USS Callister: Into Infinity" is a full-on sequel to the original outer space installment, with Cristin Milioti and Jimmi Simpson reprising their crew members of the titular starship.

As for the other new episodes,...

Quick ViewAbout Black Mirror season 7Will there be a Black Mirror season 8?Potential release date of Black Mirror season 8

Black Mirror: Maria’s Meltdown and Verity’s Delusions Couldn’t Save This Episode From Being the Worst Misfire of Season 7
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers for Black Mirror Season 7 Episode 2 - Bête Noire

Siena Kelly and Rosy McEwen shine in this second episode of the seventh season of Black Mirror. But their performances alone couldn’t save the episode from falling short of the Black Mirror quality. The season opened strong with the episode Common People, but Bête Noire lacks technological depth and suffers from glacial pacing.

As with many recent episodes, Charlie Brooker leans heavier into psychological drama than technological commentary. In the episode, the tech aspect is almost non-existent or treated so vaguely that it felt more like magic. Brooker failed to explore the mechanics of Verity’s parallel-world manipulations, as his focus was more on building the slow-burn tension.

Black Mirror Season 7's Strangest Episode Has A Premise Ripped Straight From Rick & Morty
Image
Spoilers below for the "Black Mirror" episode "Bête Noire."

After the fan backlash to "Black Mirror" season 6's brief foray into fantasy territory, it seems at first glance like season 7 has course corrected: every episode of the new season is based around technology in some way, with no werewolves or demons in sight. However, the premise of the second episode of the season, "Bête Noire," is science fiction by technicality alone. When the villain reveals her big scheme, it's hard not to wonder: at what point does the tech become so advanced it's basically magic?

The episode is about Maria (Siena Kelly), a woman who feels like she's going crazy when Google results and written evidence start contradicting her own memories. At first she only misremembers trivial things, like discovering that the fictional "Barnies" chain restaurant has actually been "Bernies" this whole time; it's a fun reverse of the common Mandela effect example people give,...

Black Mirror S7 E2 "Bête Noire" Recap And Review - The Quantum Mandela Effect
Image
The second episode of Black Mirror’s seventh season is another solid episode that makes you think the mistakes of season six are being repeated before ensuring they aren’t. “Bête Noire” definitely emphasizes the fiction side of science fiction, but it is still an entertaining episode of television.

Spoilers for Black Mirror season seven episode two “Bête Noire” below.

The setting for this episode is something that seems like it will play into the story much more than it actually does, something that ended up being a bit disappointing but doesn’t truly take away from the quality of the episode. Our main character who ends up being a bit of a protagonist and an antagonist named Maria and played by Siena Kelly works at a candy company on the research and development team. Essentially, she designs and creates the recipe for new candy.

Black Mirror season 7 episode 2 is a fascinating and frightening political project

Given the success of previous Black Mirror episodes about social dynamics, like season 3's "Nosedive" and season 2's "White Bear," the second installment of Black Mirror season 7, titled "Bête Noire," follows the show's formula nicely, and it felt like a return to form. An all British cast! British-specific swear words! Gasp!

Why ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 Might Be Its Best Shot at Emmy Gold
Image
Could this be the year “Black Mirror” finally reflects gold?

After more than a decade of mind-bending morality tales and dystopian nightmares, Netflix’s “Black Mirror” might finally be on the verge of achieving a long-elusive milestone: an Emmy nomination for outstanding limited or anthology series.

While the anthology has long been critically lauded — and an Emmy magnet when it was eligible in the television movie category — the Television Academy’s 2021 rule change, which moved anthologies alongside miniseries, has made it harder for shows like “Black Mirror” to compete on equal footing. However, the seventh season, which dropped April 10, is drawing some of its most substantial critical acclaim. And with a submission landscape thinner than usual, this might be creator Charlie Brooker’s best shot yet at one of the top prizes.

First launched in 2011 by Brooker, “Black Mirror” has taken its cues from classics like “The Twilight Zone,” with...

Black Mirror Season 7's Strongest Episode Is Undone By A Lousy Ending
Image
This post contains spoilers for season 7 of "Black Mirror."

When Charlie Brooker's "Black Mirror" burst into the scene in 2011, it had a finger on the pulse of all things speculative fiction. Think the most thought-provoking, dystopian story bytes fitted into the anthology format, exploring everything from data privacy and consumerist identity to virtual realms of consciousness within a sci-fi setting. Even the most middling episodes were backed by a worthwhile vision, as every story underlined an essential truth. A dip in quality, however, was apparent by the time season 6 rolled around, which already stretched the premise to its limits. Season 7 seems to have followed in the footsteps of its predecessor, offering a mixed bag of disappointing tales that don't create a lasting impression. It is almost as if "Black Mirror" has lost its edge.

Having said that, the latest season does feature a handful of episodes that explore a solid premise.

Black Mirror Season 7 TV Review: The anthology is back with a sequel and unique original tales
Image
Plot: Charlie Brooker’s dark, satirical anthology series will return in 2025 with six brand new episodes, including a sequel to the sci-fi adventure USS Callister.

Review: Since Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror moved from the UK’s Channel 4 to Netflix in 2016, we have been lucky to get four seasons and the interactive movie Bandersnatch. The last foray into the surreal anthology was in 2023, which offered a mix of almost feature-length tales that felt a bit underwhelming compared to the legacy the series had built for itself. The seventh volume of Black Mirror debuts on Netflix today and is a return to the powerful storytelling we saw in the early years of the series. Bringing back spin-offs and continuations of beloved entries, this may be the most diverse mix of story tones and themes, all tied to the ongoing theme of technological horror that is just slightly askew from what could really happen.

Breaking Down Every Episode of ‘Black Mirror’s Seventh Season
Image
It’s been almost two years since Netflix brought us new episodes of Black Mirror, creator Charlie Brooker’s answer to The Twilight Zone. Coming off a season that covered A.I., paparazzi, the ethics of true crime and replica cyborgs loaded with their human originals’ consciousness, what can you expect in Season Seven?

Here’s a minimally spoiler-y sketch of each episode to prepare you…

Episode One: ‘Common People’

What It’s About: Amanda (Rashida Jones) has an inoperable brain tumor, but Gaynor (Tracee Ellis Ross) tells Amanda’s husband Mike (Chris O’Dowd) about an exciting new technology from her employer, Rivermind: the company can essentially replace the damaged brain tissue with a cloud backup of Amanda’s consciousness, and it only costs $300 a month! That might be nothing to another family, but for a teacher and a welder, it’s a lot, and Mike is forced into extremely...

‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 Episode 2: ‘Bête Noire’ – Recap and Ending Explained
Image
‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 keeps the twists coming, and Episode 2, ‘Bête Noire,’ is no exception. Charlie Brooker’s anthology takes us into a world where reality bends in ways that mess with your head. This time, we’re following Maria, a woman whose steady life gets thrown off track by an old classmate with a grudge. It’s a slow build that turns into a wild ride, blending psychological tension with that signature ‘Black Mirror’ tech sting.

Siena Kelly steps up as Maria, while Rosy McEwen brings a creepy edge to Verity, the classmate stirring up trouble. The episode’s got a sharp cast, including Ben Bailey Smith as their boss Gabe, and it’s packed with little nods to past seasons that we love spotting. It’s less about gadgets and more about how people twist them, making it a standout in the lineup. Let’s break it down.

Black Mirror season 7 episode 2: Bête Noire review
Siena Kelly
A high-flying development executive takes against the new employee in a solidly silly thriller. Here’s our Black Mirror: Bête Noire review.

Maria (Siena Kelly) is good at her job, and not very nice. Office wunderkind at a trendy-looking chocolate company, her idea to combine Miso jam with a dark chocolate coating is taking focus groups by storm. The first bite tastes as bizarre as it sounds – on second inspection, apparently, it starts to grow on you. We’ll take their word for it…

Still, despite her culinary triumphs, Maria has something of a mean streak. Simultaneously insecure and ambitious, she can’t help but bristle when an old classmate – Rosy McEwen’s Verity – arrives on the scene and effectively talks her way into a job in her department. Always the weird kid at school, prone to spending lunch breaks alone in the computer suite and with few social skills to speak of,...

Since 2011, Charlie Brooker's sci-fi/horror/comedy/whatever-you-want-it-to-be anthology series "Black Mirror" has had a firm hold on pop culture, a fact that was only heightened when the series made the leap to Netflix in season 3. But a curious thing happened: as the real world grew increasingly more surreal and strange, the far-out concepts of "Black Mirror" struggled to keep up. When we're living in a modern world where we're cursed to hear about the banal evil of Elon Musk and something called "Fartcoin" every single damn day, the running "Black Mirror" question asking "Eh bruv, wot if your mobile phone killed you?" starts to feel kind of silly.

Of course, no one is saying that "Black Mirror" has to accurately reflect our current weird times (although that does seem to be Brooker's whole deal with the show) as long as it tells compelling stories. Unfortunately, the series has struggled...

Black Mirror 'Bete Noire' Ending Explained: Siena Kelly and Rosy McEwen
Image
Consider Black Mirror’s “Bête Noire” a parable on gaslighting.

The darkly funny Season 7 episode follows Maria (Siena Kelly), a successful food researcher whose world is upended when her former classmate Verity (Rosy McEwen) joins a focus group to test Maria’s miso-flavored Hucklebuck candy bar.

There’s something off about Verity, who quickly embeds herself in Maria’s life by applying for and immediately landing a job as a research assistant at the company — a role Maria had no idea was even open.

Maria, a stickler for getting the facts right, grows increasingly frustrated with Verity over seemingly small transgressions. For instance, a discussion about the fast food restaurant Barnies (which fans will recognize from the Season 3 episode “Shut Up and Dance” and Season 6’s “Joan Is Awful”) intensifies when Maria corrects Verity for calling it “Bernies ‚”— only to find that she was wrong all along. Or was she?...

Black Mirror season 7 release date, time, what to expect
Image
Charlie Brooker was on to something when he created Black Mirror, a British anthology series that explores the dark side of technology and its impact on modern society. While initially a Channel 4 series, the show gained international recognition after Netflix picked it up, allowing Brooker to expand his vision even further. Six seasons have been released so far, with a highly anticipated seventh season set to be released on the streaming platform soon. We're talking about a batch of new episodes available to stream tomorrow!

Unlike the previous season, which had five episodes, Black Mirror season 7 will feature one additional episode, bringing the total to six episodes. This marks the first time since the fourth season that the show has featured this many episodes. Brooker has referred to this installment as having a touch of "Og Black Mirror." Personally, that sounds like something I'd be really excited to watch,...

Charlie Brooker Wanted a Return to ‘O.G. Black Mirror’ in Season 7 — With AI and a ‘USS Callister’ Sequel
Image
Over a decade into making “Black Mirror,” creator Charlie Brooker’s goal was to make episodes that felt like “O.G. Black Mirror.”

“Last season started out as a season called ‘Red Mirror,’ they were all going to be horror, crime, supernatural stories, etc. And then I inconveniently thought up the episode ‘Joan is Awful,’ which was none of those things and was a ‘Black Mirror’ episode,” Brooker told TheWrap.

“[This year,] I wanted every story to be about the kind of technical breakthrough that explodes into some characters’ lives and upends everything,” he added.

“That’s the basic starting point — it was back to basics.”

Brooker quite literally went back to basics by pursuing a sequel episode for “USS Callister,” which first debuted in 2017 with Season 4, which he said the original episode naturally called for. “They’d literally flown to a wormhole, and we’re in a whole new universe, and...

One of the first lines of dialogue in the episode title-revealing trailer for Black Mirror Season Seven is laughably on-the-nose: “Don’t freak out.” What follows in the two minutes after this instruction is a montage of the type of dystopian nightmare scenarios the Netflix series is known for, only with an added dash of realism ahead of the six-episode season premiere scheduled for April 10.

In the episode “Hotel Reverie,” Issa Rae stars as the Hollywood A-lister Brandy Friday. Brandy signs onto a film project in which a high-tech system...
