Two lawsuits filed this week related to the alleged pattern of sexual assaults of a onetime member of the 1980s boy band Menudo give contrasting narratives of the role the band’s then-manager played. One suit alleges that the manager repeatedly raped ex-Menudo member Roy Rosselló while handing him off to others including José Menendez, and the other lawsuit claims that these allegations, made for over a decade but recently highlighted in a 2023 Peacock documentary, are lies.
On Thursday, in a civil lawsuit filed in New York’s federal court, Rosselló claims that for three years, while in the Latin boy band, he was a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of Edgardo Díaz, the band’s founder and manager for decades. The suit alleges that from 1983 to 1986, Díaz subjected Rosselló to sexual assault, emotional manipulation and trafficking that spanned the U.S., Brazil, Puerto Rico and other locations worldwide.

Erik and Lyle Menendez will appear before the California Parole Board for a hearing on June 13, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday. Following the hearing, the three-month investigation into their behavior over decades in prison and any risk they pose if released will be submitted to the California governor’s office and a Superior Court judge. At that point, both will decide whether the convicted killers should be resentenced and subsequently released, granted clemency or remain in prison.
The Menendez brothers, who are serving double life sentences with no chance of parole for the 1989 murder of their parents, launched several legal avenues to regain their freedom beginning in 2023. This was when new, compelling evidence lent significant weight to their long-standing defense that they gunned down their parents at their Beverly Hills home in an act of self-defense stemming from years of sexual abuse at the hands of their father,...

As hope for a prison release for convicted double murderers Erik and Lyle Menendez slimmed on Monday (now that a high-profile and highly politicized resentencing bid has all but vanished), California Gov. Gavin Newsom plans to take the playbook he conceived for the brothers and apply it to potential clemency cases statewide.
On Monday, it was reported that Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s office will withdraw his predecessor’s request to reduce the Menendezes’ sentences, saying the brothers have failed to show they have complete insight into their crimes. The two men have been imprisoned in California since 1996 for the 1989 murder of their parents, in what they claim was a self-defense culmination of years of sexual abuse and other domestic horrors. As others believe, and a jury of 12 men and women agreed, it was a brutal and unflinching crime whose motive was greed. A second jury trial saw...

Following a blow by Los Angeles’ new district attorney last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom has now planted himself firmly in the good graces of the Menendez brothers, their family and legion of supporters, signaling on Wednesday that he’s potentially leaning toward offering clemency to the incarcerated convicted killers, should all other avenues fail, by calling for the California Parole Board to conduct a risk assessment investigation of the men as they seek freedom.
Erik and Lyle Menendez have been imprisoned for 35 years while serving life sentences for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, at their Beverly Hills home. Their potential release has garnered huge public interest thanks to a hit Netflix series and new, compelling evidence that emerged in a 2023 documentary. The latter suggested the brothers were not lying in their mid-’90s trials when they claimed self-defense in the double murders after a lifetime of sexual,...

With fresh attention on Erik and Lyle Menendez’s hopes for release from a California prison after serving 35 years — assisted by Netflix’s sensational reimagining of their 1989 crimes and their repercussions — the brothers’ multiple avenues toward imminent freedom have expanded beyond an initial glimmer of hope provided by newfound evidence to discussions of gubernatorial clemency and an upcoming resentencing hearing spawned by L.A.’s ousted district attorney and delayed by his successor, whose overstated role in the decision of their release will ultimately be decided by the courts.
In November, about six weeks after Ryan Murphy’s salacious Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story planted itself atop the rankings of Netflix’s top 10 series, L.A.’s incoming district attorney, Nathan Hochman, appeared to have become a major player in the inmate brothers’ 35-year legal saga. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic on Monday postponed Erik and Lyle Menendez’s resentencing hearing, originally scheduled for Dec. 11, to Jan. 30, 2025.
The move, reported by Los Angeles’ Fox 11, The Associated Press and other outlets, comes after a Monday court proceeding in which attorneys for the brothers asked the judge to reconsider their life-sentence convictions without parole for the 1989 murders of their parents.
During Monday’s proceeding, defense attorney Mark Geragos asked the judge to resentence the brothers on a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, Fox 11 reported. The older sisters of the brothers’ late parents, Kitty and José Menendez, also testified.
Geragos and fellow defense attorney Clifford Gardner filed a habeas petition asking the court to reconsider the conviction and sentences in the wake of new evidence that has received widespread attention both due to the case returning to the cultural zeitgeist via TV shows focused on the brothers’ story,...

Menendez Brothers’ Possible Release Delayed Past Thanksgiving as Gov. Newsom Punts Clemency Decision
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has decided to allow the incoming Los Angeles district attorney to weigh in on the clemency requests for Erik and Lyle Menendez, further delaying the potential release of the brothers who shot their parents dead and were tried in the 1990s and have been serving life in prison.
On Monday, Newsom announced the decision to allow incoming D.A. Nathan Hochman, a former federal prosecutor, time to look at the clemency case that has captured major public attention following the success of Netflix’s Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story amid a TikTok movement that renewed interest in the decades-old case. The Ryan Murphy-produced series brought a tsunami of controversy over some decisions about the writing and dramatic elements included in the show, particularly with its depiction of the brothers’ relationship. Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón is now supporting the Menendez brothers’ bid for clemency from Gov. Gavin Newson, the embattled official said on Wednesday when announcing that that, despite criticism that his push for the convicted killers release is a political ploy in his reelection campaign, he sent a letter of support for the inmates to Sacramento this week.
Nearly three decades after Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted of killing their parents inside the den of their Beverly Hills mansion, Gascón announced that he would seek a reduced sentence for the brothers. The decision comes after evidence uncovered by journalist Robert Rand in their cousin’s desk corroborated the brothers’ claims that they were sexually abused as children by their father. Their case sat dormant for years but was thrust back into the media spotlight — not because of this major new piece of evidence, but following Ryan Murphy’s polarizing hit Netflix series,...

The news comes almost four years after Court TV re-released the footage of their 1996 trial and new projects on Netflix renewed people’s interest in the brothers’ case.

This is a tale that never gets old, but perhaps this time it may have a happier conclusion for the Menéndez brothers as they seek to appeal their life sentence in the light of new evidence. In a new interview, Cooper Koch, who played Erik Menéndez in the ‘Monsters’ series, touched on the new evidence that wasn’t in Ryan Murphy’s interpretation of the brothers’ stories.
Cooper Koch Says “New Pieces Of Evidence” Should Have Been Included In Ryan Murphy’s Netflix Series
Despite Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monsters’ bringing their story to a global audience once more, the brothers were less than flattered by their representation in it.
Erik Menéndez was the most outspoken about it, accusing Murphy of making the show with “bad intent” and creating “horrible lies” about Lyle to portray him as a heartless monster.

Convicted murderer Erik Menendez may have had harsh condemnation of Ryan Murphy’s controversial Netflix series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, over its multifaceted portrayal of his and brother Lyle Menendez’s murder of their parents in 1989 and the criminal trials that followed. But the California inmate, who is behind bars for life, had high praise for the actor who portrays him when the two met face-to-face during a prison visit last week brokered by Kim Kardashian.
Cooper Koch, the breakout star of the hit series, told The Hollywood Reporter that when he arrived at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility on a visit to discuss prison reform and the Menendez brothers’ massive mural project at the San Diego County complex, he and the man he portrays — with newfound sympathy in a lauded performance — clocked each other almost immediately.
“We walked in the [prison’s] gymnasium, and the first person that I saw was Erik.

Following the incredible success of “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan have teamed up to tackle the second installment of their “Monster” anthology series for Netflix, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”
The limited series seeks to discover who the real monsters in the high-profile murder trial were. The Menendez brothers captivated America, as their televised Court TV trial is one of the first of its kind. The two boys killed their parents on Aug. 20, 1989, at only 18 and 21 years old. Their counsel called it self defense, while the prosecution called them greedy. Both were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after two trials.
Murphy assembled established actors like Javier Bardem, Nathan Lane, and Chloë Sevigny to embody the real-life adult characters but brought on some newcomers to portray the Menendez brothers themselves.

It was series co-creator Ryan Murphy’s choice to show just how graphic the shotgun murders were at the beginning of “Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story,” director Carl Franklin told TheWrap.
“Ryan had a lot of specific ideas about how he wanted to do this,” said Franklin, who helmed the first two episodes of the Netflix series, as well as that of Murphy’s “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” on FX.
“Ryan wanted to make sure that people understood the brutality of the crimes, and to establish that early on. Because it is a dialectic in a lot of ways, it’s a ‘Rashomon’ kind of a thing, where the young men have their version of what happened. And then later, we see what Kitty and Jose felt about the situation, or based on the information that was available to Ryan and [co-creator] Ian Brennan.”

The sensational murder trial of Erik and Lyle Menendez in 1993 and O.J. Simpson’s “trial of the century” soon after marked two of the biggest media events of the 1990s as televised court proceedings caught fire. The cases even have similar origins, with horrific killings in affluent neighborhoods in West Los Angeles. That’s why in Netflix and Ryan Murphy’s controversial new series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, it’s no surprise to find some key moments from the former linebacker’s closely watched trial referenced in passing and in the background. But then Simpson turns up in the series’ penultimate episode as a character, moments after his arrest in 1994 following his infamous Bronco chase.

Ryan Murphy is defending his Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story after one of its main subjects, Erik Menendez, criticized the project.
“I think it’s interesting that he’s issued a statement without having seen the show,” the co-creator of the Monsters anthology told Entertainment Tonight on Monday. Murphy was speaking while on a New York red carpet for the premiere of another show he’s launching this month, Grotesquerie on FX. “It’s really, really hard, if it’s your life, to see your life up onscreen.”
Since its release last week, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story has been capturing the news cycle. It’s currently the No. 1 show on Netflix in the U.

Though it may feel like a McU-level cameo of headline-grabbing names from the ’90s, one of the most surprising claims of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is true. Erik Menendez did actually know O.J. Simpson, at least for a brief time.
Their meeting happened in June of 1994, shortly after Simpson was arrested following his infamous Bronco chase. By that point, both brothers had been imprisoned for over four years.
Here’s everything we know about this stranger-than-fiction meeting and how “Monsters” retelling of it compares to other times Simpson has appeared in Ryan Murphy’s work.

Ever since he debuted his "American Crime Story" in 2016 with the critically acclaimed miniseries "The People v. O.J. Simpson," Ryan Murphy has become television/streaming's preeminent purveyor of lurid, fact-based sagas. Murphy and his collaborators are masters of titillation and/or revulsion, but they've yet to come close to matching the whip-smart dialogue and nimble storytelling of "The People v. O.J. Simpson" writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. "The Assassination of Gianni Versace" and "Impeachment" were more facile and, in alarming respects, callous to the point of mean-spiritedness.
This quality was hugely amplified when Murphy took his true crime game to Netflix for "Dahmer: Monster -- The Jeffrey Dahmer Story." The 2022 10-part series was long on unpleasantness, gore, and outright cruelty, but disappointingly short on insight. It was a wallow. And I say this as someone fascinated by serial killers. The brothers initially avoided suspicion, but their lavish spending after the murders raised flags. When Erik confessed details of abuse to his therapist, the case took a dramatic turn and the brothers were arrested in 1990.
Their ensuing trials in the early 1990s became a media sensation. Lyle and Erik claimed they murdered their parents out of fear from years of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse by their father. The first trial in 1993 ended with hung juries, while the second in 1996 resulted in life sentences without parole for murder and conspiracy.
Netflix’s new true crime series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” examines these events. Spanning from the murders through sentencing, the nine-episode show stars Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch as the brothers. It has sparked fresh debate by renewing...

I read somewhere that if you want to hide the truth in plain sight, you should make a movie about it. I don’t remember who exactly said that, but after watching the Monsters series, I am quite certain that the saying is meant for “artists” like Ryan Murphy. Before the second season was released on Netflix, I watched a plethora of documentaries and court trial videos and read a few books about the Menendez murders, and to be honest, I had mixed feelings about the entire case. I wasn’t sure whether the brothers were lying or not. I hoped that maybe Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series would help me get some answers to the questions that the bizarre case had raised, but it only left me more confused. It seemed like the makers put all the real-life events, rumors, hearsay, and gossip in a blender and made a...

It is quite natural for a case like The Menendez Murders to leave an impact on all those real-life people the two brothers came across in between these seven years (1989-1996). Starting from the detectives to the psychiatrist, public prosecutors, attorneys, reporters, and more, everyone has a version of their story about the Menendez brothers. But you see, with so many different narratives out there, it is sometimes difficult to differentiate between what’s real and what’s not. And how can a creator like Ryan Murphy miss the chance to not take advantage of that confusion? He brought certain real-life elements but then diluted it with rumors and hearsay so generously that after a point, it became difficult to separate the two. And one such event in the series involved O. J. Simpson, who was introduced in the penultimate episode of the Netflix’ series. But before moving forward, I...

When Court TV first broadcast the Menendez case in 1993, the trial took America by storm. Now Netflix’s latest series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” is diving into the divisive case.
Though the brothers originally said they were not responsible for the murders of their parents José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, since they’ve admitted to the crimes, they’ve stuck to the same defense. Lyle and Erik Menendez claim that both of their parents physically, emotionally and sexually abused them for years and that they were afraid their parents were going to kill them if they didn’t act first. That’s what led to them pulling shotguns on their parents in 1989.
From exactly what the brothers accused their parents of to the intimacy of Lyle and Erik’s own relationship, here’s what we know from the case.

Before the O.J. Simpson case transfixed America and forever changed the media, there was the Menendez Brothers case. It’s this highly publicized trial that stands at the center of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s latest series for Netflix, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”
An anthology sequel to “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” “Monsters” promises to dive into this hugely impactful case as it asks who the real monsters were: the brothers, their murdered parents or the media and the public at large? Sourced largely from Robert Rand’s book, “The Menendez Murders: The Shocking Untold Story of the Menendez Family and the Killings that Stunned the Nation,” here’s your brief guide to this convoluted case.

José and Kitty Menendez make their Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story debut in the final trailer for the Netflix anthology series, unmasking the now-deceased parents of the real-life brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez.
Following a teaser trailer that hinted at cracks in the family, and the first official trailer focusing on the Menendez brothers after their parents were killed, the new nearly three-minute look at Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s latest Monsters installment brings José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez into a dark spotlight. The 10-episode season releases Sept. 19 on Netflix.
The trailer opens with a tension-building conversation between Barden’s José and son Lyle, portrayed by Nicholas Chavez, where José compares his son to a disobeying dog. “I think that I didn’t hit you hard enough,” says José, before slapping his son across the face. “So as a father, that is my fault. And I’m sorry.

Three decades ago, the infamous trial of Lyle and Erik Menendez riled the nation as people watched the brothers plead their case against the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. In 1996, the Menendez brothers were sentenced to life in prison. Throughout their trial, the defense argued Lyle and Erik murdered their parents out of fear after years of sexual molestation by their music executive father Jose. Now, decades later, another allegation has been brought forth, this time by Roy Rosselló, a former member of the Puerto Rican boy band sensation Menudo, who says that he was sexually assaulted as a teenager by Jose Menendez, the New York Times reported.
The “Today” show aired these allegations on Tuesday during an exclusive first look at the upcoming three-part Peacock docuseries, “Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed.”

Peacock’s upcoming true-crime docuseries on the infamous Menendez brothers includes a shocking allegation from a former Menudo boy band member against Jose Menendez, the father of the two boys convicted of murdering their parents.
The Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed trailer, unveiled Tuesday, features Roy Rosselló claiming he was sexually assaulted as a teenager by Jose Menendez.
“It’s time for the world to know the truth,” Rosselló says in the trailer.
He adds of the elder Menendez, “I know what he did to me in his house.”
Their Menendez brothers’ trial became a national sensation as Americans closely followed the case and the brothers testified that the murders were mitigated by a lifetime of sexual abuse by their father. After a mistrial and deadlocked jury, the brothers were later retried and convicted in 1996 of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole.
