The rest of the main cast includes Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroto Kanai, Takehiro Hira, and Moeka Hoshi.
While a premiere date is yet to be announced, FX renewed the show for seasons 2 and 3 in May. FX's Shgun is an adaptation of James Clavell's book, and it has changed many of the novel's aspects. The show is one of the most popular and successful series of 2024; Shgun won the most awards at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards and had the most nominations. Shgun episode 10 masterfully concluded season 1 and wrapped up the stories of all main characters while also raising the question of what comes next for Yoshii Toranaga following his victory against Ishido. The critically acclaimed FX series was based on James Clavells Shgun novel, which itself was inspired by the true story of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The major changes Japan went through at the end of the 16th century set the narrative for Shgun, whose season 1 finale confirmed Toranagas goal was indeed to overthrow the Regents and lead Japan into a new era.
Yabushige, who committed seppuku for helping Ishido kill Mariko, was the only Shgun character to hear from Toranaga himself the full extent of his plan. While the battle between Toranaga's forces and Ishido's wasnt shown, Shguns finale made it clear that Toranaga was going to win the war. John Blackthorne,...

The renewal was expected and foreshadowed by star-producer Hiroyuki Sanada closing a deal to continue as Lord Yoshii Toranaga. Also back are co-creators, executive producers and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo as well as EP Michaela Clavell.
For now, FX and streaming partner Hulu are saying that they are working with the estate of Shōgun author James Clavell to to develop two additional seasons.
There is no mention of a green light, and a start date for production has not been set, but a writers’ room is being assembled and will begin this summer. More seasons of “Shōgun” are (maybe) on the way.
Variety has learned that FX, Hulu and the estate of James Clavell — who authored the novel on which “Shōgun” is based — are working to develop more seasons of the critically acclaimed series. A writers’ room will begin this summer to develop two more seasons of the show.
It must be noted that this is not a formal renewal, and no production has been scheduled for more episodes. Series co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo remain onboard the series, as does executive producer Michaela Clavell of the James Clavell estate, as well as series star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada.
It was previously reported that a second season of the historical drama was being eyed by FX following the success of Season 1. Sources said that FX was mulling entering the show into the drama series category for the Emmys rather than limited series,...

The new hit release from FX, Shogun, quickly became one of the best TV shows of 2024 for its incredible cinematography and tense plot, with its quotes being a big part of its appeal as well. Set in 1600s Japan, Shogun was adapted from the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell and followed the stories of Pilot-Major John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) as he became a Samurai warrior, unaware that he was also a crucial part of Lord Yoshii Toranaga's (Hiroyuki Sanada) plot.

The Shogun finale depicted Lord Toranaga's victory without showing any battles. Shogun's focus on character development made it more satisfying than an action-packed finale. Lord Toranaga's clever plan and political games allowed him to take over without needing to fight a war.
Shōgun’s finale subverted expectations and delivered something very different from what many thought would happen. Yabushige betrays Mariko in Shgun episode 9 for his own survival. Yabushige's loyalty is questioned as he plays both sides in the conflict. Yabushige's unpredictable actions may have major consequences in the finale.
Yabushige let the assassins into Osaka in Shōgun episode 9, which caused Lady Mariko's death and proved he is the show’s biggest wildcard. A local lord fascinated by death, Yabushige saw himself in the middle of Ishido and Toranaga’s war when a foreign ship arrived at his village. Yabushige’s fate has been tied to that of the Anjin since the beginning of the show, but his allegiances have not been as clear. As the most unpredictable of the Shōgun characters, Kashigi Yabushige poses a threat even to his allies.

Lady Mariko fought against Ishido's guards alone. Mariko was outnumbered and ready to die. Mariko's death was tragic, but it might have helped disrupt Ishido's power, fulfilling Toranaga's plan.
Shōgun episode 9 delivered the fight scene the show had been teasing for years, yet it ended up being a rather tragic moment for Lady Mariko. The last episode before Shōgun’s finale, “Crimson Sky” saw Mariko fulfilling Lord Toranaga’s plan in a mission where death was synonymous with victory. To prove that Ishido was holding important daimyos and ladies in his castle, Mariko publicly confronted the leader of the Regents and ordered him to let her leave Osaka. Upon Ishido’s refusal, Mariko assembled her guards and tried to leave the castle by force.

Lady Mariko dies heroically to expose Ishido's crimes, setting up a high-stakes series finale. Yabushige betrayed Mariko to save himself, orchestrating the attack on Osaka castle. Mariko's death may give Toranaga the opportunity to reduce Ishido's power and finally attack Osaka.
Lady Mariko dies at the end of Shōgun episode 9 in what was by far the saddest and most tragic chapter of the show so far, setting up a high-stakes series finale. Lord Toranaga’s mission to Lady Mariko, which was teased in Shōgun episode 8, was to go to Osaka and essentially make herself into a prisoner. Mariko was to prove that Ishido was keeping hostages by becoming one herself, which would put Ishido in check and force him to either expose himself or free the hostages. Lady Mariko has a vital mission: she heading to Osaka on behalf of Toranaga. Toranaga trusted only Mariko with the truth about his surrender. Mariko's history with Ochiba may come into play in Shogun's final episodes.
Lady Mariko has been given a very important mission in Shōgun episode 8 after Lord Toranaga revealed his true plan. Following Toda Hiromatsu’s death at the end of Shōgun episode 8, the show has confirmed that Toranaga does not intend to surrender after all. All of Toranaga’s actions since Nagakado’s death have been part of an elaborate act to make Ishido believe he has given up. The only person Toranaga has trusted with the true nature of his surrender is Mariko, who is now on her way to Osaka on behalf of her lord.

Nagakado’s death in Shōgun episode 7 was as gruesome as it was surprising, confirming the show’s unpredictability and raising the stakes for the final three episodes of Lord Toranaga’s story. While Shōgun’s latest episode was mainly focused on Toranaga and offered a glimpse at his first battle, it also spent a lot of time with Yoshii Nagakado, Lord Toranaga’s son. Disappointing that his uncle betrayed his father, Nagakado tried to fix things himself to prevent Toranaga from turning himself in.

The premiere of FX’s Shōgun delivered a sizable streaming audience worldwide to go along with solid on-air numbers in the United States.
Over its first six days of release, the limited series’ first episode — based on James Clavell’s best-selling 1975 novel — gathered 9 million streaming views globally on Hulu, Disney+ and Star+ (with “view” defined as the now-standard formula of total viewing time divided by running time). According to Disney, that’s the best worldwide debut to date for a Disney General Entertainment scripted series (i.e., one that doesn’t fall under the Marvel, Star Wars, Disney Branded TV, Pixar or National Geographic banners).
Domestically, the premiere episode of Shōgun also scored the best streaming debut for an FX show on Hulu (with an assist from Disney+), edging out the season two opener of The Bear. Outside the United States, Shōgun topped season one of The Kardashians as the...

The unlikely hero of FX/Hulu’s new adaptation of Shōgun is… James Clavell’s 1975 novel.
The pervasive perception of the epic tome, nearly 50 years after its publication and nearly as long after its wildly popular NBC television adaptation, is that it’s dated — a colonialist Dances With Samurai that would never be made today, leaving aside how much Shōgun DNA is visible in offerings like Max’s Tokyo Vice and Netflix’s spectacular Blue Eye Samurai.
In truth, read through a modern lens, Clavell’s novel is both a spectacular yarn and as thoroughly well-intentioned and well-researched a story as a popular-skewing book could be in 1975. This is evident in Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo’s fresh take, which is less a reinvention and more a carefully considered excavation of the Clavell text. Although there are very clear shifts in focus and adjustments that reflect an evolved cultural understanding,...

"We must protect Japan against treachery." FX & Hulu have revealed one final official trailer for Shōgun, created by writers Justin Marks & Rachel Kondo. "I agree if you exoticize or fetishize Japanese culture from the Western and male gaze it would not fly. I...
