5 Essential K-Dramas Everyone Should Watch At Least Once

Not only are these shows among the best K-dramas ever made, but they are also largely accessible to newcomers to Korean television. These selections run the gamut of genres while highlighting common elements in Korean shows. With all that said,...

The Most-Watched K-Drama On Cable Is Based On A Thrilling British Series
Image
Korean scripted shows, or K-dramas, have looked to American and British sources of inspiration before, even providing their own spin on Agatha Christie's British literary detective Miss Marple. For the 2020 psychological thriller "The World of the Married," however, the show's creative team took inspiration from far darker and more recent source material. Indeed, the acclaimed 2015 British series "Doctor Foster," which features a strong early performance from Jodie Comer, served as the narrative basis for the K-drama. Though both shows share an underlying conflict and escalating brutal stakes, the Korean iteration deviates from the British show quickly and noticeably.

Both stories focus on a successful doctor: Gemma Foster (Suranne Jones) in the original and Ji Sun-woo (Kim Hee-ae) in the Korean version. Seemingly happily married, the protagonists learn that their husbands are cheating on them with younger women, leading to an unraveling of more devastating secrets. The wronged wives pursue...

Song Kang’s Underrated K-Drama Romance Was Totally Different From His Other On-Screen Couples
Image
Song Kang has starred in several K-drama romances, but his role in the 2021 series Nevertheless is fascinatingly different from most of his other characters. Since appearing as Hwang Sun-oh in Love Alarm, Song Kang has made a name for himself as one of the best K-drama actors. His career, although relatively new, includes some great K-dramas, such as Sweet Home, My Demon, and Forecasting Love and Weather. 7 Shows Like ‘When The Phone Rings’ If You Liked Netflix’s Romance K-Drama
Image
K-drama When The Phone Rings is the perfect blend of spicy romance, loads of mystery, and just the right amount of drama that nearly feels too over the top but isn’t. I’m going to be honest; it’s really hard to find other shows that are similar in any way, but I guess, as I always do, I’ll try to list some shows that share at least one of these things in common with When The Phone Rings. If you’re familiar with our website, you know I’ve been saying this in nearly every episodic recap, but I find the show quite reminiscent of some old shows, particularly from 2013-2016, so it wouldn’t make sense if I made a listicle without any shows from that time. With that said, though, I will try to give you a balanced set of shows, both old and new,...

Image
It's been three years since Song Kang and Han So-hee’s K-drama, Nevertheless was released, and this new Netflix romantic J-drama is perfect to watch if you miss the original show. Directed by Kim Ga-ram and based on the webtoon of the same name by Jung Seo, Nevertheless sees Yoo Na-bi and Park Jae-eon falling in love despite being skeptical about romantic relationships. The 10-episode romantic K-drama is one of Song Kang and Han So-Hee’s best shows and has been praised for how the plot isn't like the typical storyline that audiences have come to expect from shows in the genre.

Given Nevertheless’ success and popularity, a second season would have been expected. However, the K-drama didn't get a sophomore season. Instead, a Japanese remake of Na-bi and Jae-eon’s romance was created. The J-drama, Nevertheless: The Shapes of Love, follows the same storyline as the original K-drama and...

Song Kang & Han So-hee’s Romance K-Drama Is Back 3 Years Later But Not As You Would Expect
Image
Han So-hee and Song Kang’s critically acclaimed Nevertheless K-drama is back three years later but as an entirely different project with different actors. Based on a Korean webtoon of the same name, Nevertheless is one of the best romantic K-dramas of all time and ditches a lot of the genre’s tropes to tell a more grounded, intense love story. Han So-hee plays Na-bi, who has just come out of a toxic relationship and is not ready to fall in love again. Jae-on, Song Kang’s character, is a charming, flirty man who doesn’t seem interested in a real relationship.

The concept of two people who are not ready for a relationship falling in love made Nevertheless a rather fascinating K-drama that stood out from other entries in the genre. While broadcast K-dramas rarely get sequels, it is not uncommon for Korean shows to get international remakes. Nevertheless:...

Is Gyeongseong Creature Based on a True Story?
Image
Quick Links What Is the Gyeongseong Creature Drama About? The Drama Is Partly Based on a True Story Gyeongseong Creature Is a Fictionalized Version of History

Gyeongseong Creature is one of South Korea's finest action thrillers, living up to the high standards that K-dramas often set. Starring Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee, the drama has thus far released two thrilling seasons, the first in 2023 (set in the 1940s) and the second in the fall of 2024 (set in present-day Korea).

While the drama is packed with fictional elements like monsters and zombies, there are instances when it feels like it is based on true historical occurrences. While Season 2 is more reminiscent of Parasyte: The Grey, the first season mirrors many incidents from World War II. This brings us to the main question: Is Gyeongseong Creature based on a true story?

Gyeongseong Creature Part 1s Ending Explained: Is Tae-sang Infected?
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Gyeongseong Creature Part 1.Gyeongseong Creature episode 7 concluded Part 1 with shocking twists and major cliffhangers, creating huge anticipation for Part 2. Similar to several Netflix shows, including many K-Drams, Gyeongseong Creature was released in two parts. The first part consisted of seven episodes, whereas part 2 had three episodes. Gyeongseong Creature Part 1 sees Chae-ok and all of the survivors escaping from the Ongseong Hospital and returning to the city. However, Tae-sang stays behind, and while he is not dead, he might be in a lot of trouble.

Gyeongseong Creature Part 1s ending also saw the Japanese police looking for the people who escaped the hospital, with the oppression against the locals increasing. Kato orchestrated for Chae-ok to drink a sample of Najin so that she would turn into a creature, just like what happened to her mother. However, he is not sure if she is the one who drank it,...

Gyeongseong Creature Part 2s Ending & That Post-Credits Scene Explained
Image
Warning! Contains Mild Spoilers For Gyeongseong Creature Season 2!Gyeongseong Creature season 1s finale has multiple cliffhangers, including a post-credits scene that changes everything about the stories of Chae-ok and Tae-sang. The newest Netflix Korean drama was split into two parts, with the first ending after Chae-ok and most of the hospital prisoners escaped. Gyeongseong Creature Part 2 picked up right from where episode 7 left off, and it ended with the Ongseong Hospital's destruction ahead of the end of the Japanese colonial rule over Korea in August 1945.

Gyeongseong Creature Part 2 confirmed that Lady Maeda was behind it all. Not only did she provide the Ongseong Hospital and the military with the funds they needed to conduct the experiments, but she also picked test subjects for them. Lady Maeda got Myeong-ja sent to the hospital, just like she arranged for Chae-oks mother to be captured and turned into a test subject years ago.

Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Gyeongseong Creature season 2.

Gyeongseong Creature season 2 finally answered the question of who Jang Ho-jae is and what Park Seo-joon's role is in the second chapter of the Netflix series. Initially, Park Seo-joon played Jang Tae-sang, owner of The House of Golden Treasure who had a close-knit network that allowed him to get anything he desired. Tae-sang played a vital role in the liberation and destruction of Ongseong Hospital in 1945 Gyeongseong (Seoul), but Gyeongseong Creature's strange time shift left viewers confused as to who Park Seo-joon's character is in the Netflix K-drama's latest season.

In Gyeongseong Creature's season 1 ending, Park Seo-joon was revealed to be playing the role of Jang Ho-jae in the show's next installment. While this move made sense for the surprise time jump, the return of the likes of Han So-hee, who would continue to play her character Yoon Chae-ok,...

How Claudia Kim's Lady Maeda Returns In Gyeongseong Creature Season 2
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Gyeongseong Creature season 2.Claudia Kim's Lady Maeda was a crucial antagonist in Gyeongseong Creature's first season, and the actress' surprise turn in the newly released second season is one of the biggest twists of the thriller series. Starring Han So-hee and Park Seo-joon, Gyeongseong Creature is a K-drama set during the Japanese occupation of Korea, putting a sci-fi twist on real-life historical events that happened in Gyeongseong (Seoul). However, the Netflix K-drama's second season removes itself from its pivotal historical setting and thrusts its characters into the modern world, leaving many unanswered questions about how they got there.

In Gyeongseong Creature season 2, Yoon Chae-ok (Han So-hee) finds herself living in the present day, once again working as a sleuth. Her work soon sees her cross paths with Jang Ho-tae (Park Seo-joon), who bears a striking resemblance to Jang Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon). The continual crossing of...

Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Gyeongseong Creature season 2.The highly anticipated second season of Gyeongseong Creature sees the K-drama end on a surprisingly similar note to its first season. Starring big K-drama names Han So-hee and Park Seo-joon, Gyeongseong Creature 2 takes its central characters out of the initial setting of Japanese-occupied Gyeongseong (Seoul) and throws them into the present day. The first season presented many questions Gyeongseong Creature 2 needed to answer, and the Netflix K-drama does so with a high-tension finale.

In season 2, episode 7 the bad blood between Gyeongseong Creature's main characters comes to a head. ‘Gyeongseong Creature’ Season 2 Netflix Review: Unnecessary And Way Too Long
Image
If you know me (I’ll admit most of you don’t), you know that I love every kind of K-drama under the sun, and I will root for anything Han So-Hee is in. But honestly, I’m just a bit tired of K-dramas trying to take the multi-season route instead of sticking to what they do best, making 16 consecutive full-length features. With that out of the way, I didn’t particularly enjoy the first season of Gyeongseong Creature either. Sure, there was chemistry, there was a decent enough plot, but it didn’t feel fresh or as fantastical as it was made out to be. Plus, the creatures just don’t work, in my opinion. However, I didn’t find myself bored in the middle of watching it. I was looking forward to what was coming next; it was only in retrospect that I noticed that I had some icks about the show,...

From there, the South Korean actress earned a minor role in a K-drama that quickly developed into several supporting roles, and finally, main parts in some of the best K-dramas of all time. Gyeongseong Creature Recap: 7 Things To Remember Before The K-Dramas Season 2
Gyeongseong Creature (2023)
Gyeongseong Creature season 2 brings back Han So-hee and Park Seo-joon in a story about legacy and karma, this time in 2024 instead of the late 20th century. One of many Netflix original K-dramas, Gyeongseong Creature premiered on December 22, 2023, with seven episodes. The final three episodes of the first season were released two weeks later on January 5, 2024. Shortly after the conclusion of season 1, Gyeongseong Creature was officially renewed for season 2. Given how season 1 ended, the announcement of a second chapter was hardly a surprise. Gyeongseong Creature 2 premiers Friday, September 27 on Netflix.

The horror K-Drama tells the story of Jang Tae-sang, whose life takes a turn after an investigation of a missing person leads him to Chae-ok, a detective who is also looking for someone who went missing. Together, Tae-sang and Chae-ok had to face the demons of their past, sometimes quite literally. Gyeongseong Creature season 1s ending was mostly self-contained and saw...

Han So Hee’s mother, Ms. Shin arrested for running illegal gambling
Image
The recent news surrounding Han So Hee’s mother, Ms. Shin, has brought attention to the actress’s difficult family history. On September 2, 2024, South Korean media outlet TV Chosun reported that Ms. Shin, identified as the mother of My Name actress Han So Hee, was arrested for operating illegal gambling dens across several South Korean cities, including Ulsan and Wonju. This marks her second arrest, with allegations that she has been involved in running 12 illegal gambling establishments since 2021, using “proxy owners” to manage these operations.

Ms. Shin’s troubled past has already strained her relationship with her daughter. She has previously been involved in multiple fraud cases, including using a bank account under Han So Hee’s name to borrow money without her knowledge when the actress was still a minor. In March 2022, Han So Hee’s agency, 9ato Entertainment, clarified that the actress had no responsibility for her mother’s debts,...

Gyeongseong Creature Officially Confirms How Park Seo-joon & Han So-hee Will Return In Season 2
Image
The first trailer for Gyeongseong Creature season 2 offers the best look yet at the returns of Han So-hee and Park Seo-joon and confirms how their characters can be back despite the 79-year-time jump. Gyeongseong Creature season 1s ending was very shocking not only because of the death and resurrection of Chae-ok but also because of the post-credits scene set in 2024. Somehow, a character who looked just like Jang Tae-sang was watching TV in the modern-day, setting the stage for a radically different season 2.

While there are plenty of historical K-dramas, it is not very common for a show to start as a period piece and move to the present day midway through the story. Park Seo-joons character in the post-credits scene was referred to as Ho-jae, which raised the question of whether he was really Tae-sang or a completely different person. Likewise, while Han So-hee was confirmed to play Chae-ok...

‘Gyeongseong Creature,’ Hit Korean Mystery Series, Sets Trailer Ahead of Season 2
Image
Netflix has revealed a trailer for its hit Korean mystery series “Gyeongseong Creature” ahead of the upload of its second season on Sept. 27.

The first season was set in 1945, during the Japanese occupation of Seoul, then known as Gyeongseong. The Imperial Army’s biological experiments on human were not only cruel, they unleashed a monster creature.

The second season jumps to present day Seoul and follows Chae-ok (portrayed by Han So-hee) who encounters Ho-jae (Park Seo-jun), who bears an uncanny resemblance to the man she once knew in 1945.

It also introduces two key new characters. One is Seung-jo, a shadowy operative for Jeonseung Biotech – formerly the Ongseong Hospital in Season 1, who is portrayed by Bae Hyeon-seong.

The other, portrayed by Lee Mu-saeng is a character who crafts a sinister plan in the labs of Jeonseung Biotech to recreate the experiments from 1945.

The show is directed by Chung Dong-yoon from a script by Kang Eun-kyung.

Netflix’s ‘Gyeongseong Creature’ Season 2 Gets Trailer

Season 2 of Netflix’s Gyeongseong Creature now has a trailer. The science fiction K-drama is teleporting the action from Season 1’s 1945 to the present day, and will star the likes of Park Seo-jun, Han So-hee, Lee Mu-saeng and Bae Hyeon-seon. Where Season 1 focused on the Japanese Imperial Army’s occupation of Gyeongseong and the experiments carried out on Korean men and women, Season 2 will focus on the ties between o-jae (Park Seo-jun), a man deceptively similar in looks and demeanor to Season 1 lead Tae-sang, and Chae-ok (Han So-hee), a survivor of the Gyeongseong spring.
