As the stakes rise inside and outside the family, a mysterious new threat emerges—one that could unravel the Russos forever.

From Samantha Stephens on “Bewitched” to Sabrina Spellman on “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” the concept of a TV show about witches is an old (pointed) hat. And it’s not a trend that will soon disappear, if there’s any indication from buzzy shows like the upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series on HBO and the second season of Netflix’s “Wednesday.”
But our historical depictions of witches and interpretations of the pagan beliefs are both steeped in arts and culture. And this means they come with good, bad and even conflicting tropes. When developing a TV show, it’s often up to the creators and their creative teams to decide which way something wiccan is coming for their projects.
‘Agatha All Along’ cast (L-r) Sasheer Zamata, Joe Locke, Kathryn Hahn, Patti LuPone, Debra Jo Rupp and Alice Wu-Gulliver Chuck Zlotnick

Is Wizards Beyond Waverly Place coming back for season 2?(Photo Credit –Disney+)
That’s right, Disney+ and the Disney Channel have officially renewed the hit Wizards of Waverly Place spinoff for a second season, and fans are beyond excited (pun totally intended).
The sequel series follows an all-grown-up Justin Russo (David Henrie) as he steps into the mentor role, training a young wizard named Bille (Janice LeAnn Brown). But let’s be real, what fans really lost their minds over was the return of Selena Gomez as Alex Russo in season 1! With familiar faces like Maria Canals-Barrera and David DeLuise popping in as well, the nostalgia is strong with this one.

One of Disney+’s biggest recent revivals has gotten a big spot of renewal news!
Fans of Disney+ may love their shows but are wary of getting too invested. That’s because the streamer has a bad habit of canceling some shows after just one season. That includes some cult series like American Born Chinese, Renegade Nell, and Willow.
It’s also big-time shows that get the axe with Star Wars: The Acolyte. So it’s a bigger deal when a show gets a second season now.
Thankfully, it’s happened for one of the streamer’s bigger successes of 2024-25. The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Wizards Beyond Waverly Place will be getting a second season following a great run on both Disney Channel and Disney+.

Selena Gomez confirms that Alex Russo's business isn't finished yet, as she teases that her next appearance in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place may come sooner than expected. The 2024 Disney Channel series is a sequel to Gomez's teen sitcom that ran from 2007 to 2012 and focused on a family of wizards living in New York, as Alex studied magic alongside her siblings. In Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, Alex reconnects with her brother and former wizard Justin (David Henrie), asking for his help to mentor wizard-in-training Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown). However, reports indicated that Gomez's appearance would be in a guest star capacity.
While Wizards Beyond Waverly Place continues to air, Gomez shared on Instagram (via People) about the current reception to the show. As she thanked audiences for their support, the star confirmed that the series wasn't done with Alex yet and that she would be appearing on-screen soon.

Some of the original cast, including Henrie and Gomez, now both in EP roles, have returned for the sequel series. Wizards Beyond Waverly Place brings back fan-favorite characters alongside new ones, delivering hilarious sequences of over-the-top humor, as well as a meta-joke about one of the franchise's biggest stars that creates a paradox. Wizards Beyond Waverly Place expands the Russo family tree from Wizards of Waverly Place with the introduction of Justin Russo's (David Henrie) wife and children, as well as the pre-teen wizard Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) he takes in at the request of his sister Alex (Selena Gomez). Justin Russo's two sons, Roman and Milo, haven't revealed any magical abilities yet in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place despite being part of the Russo family tree, but there are a number of possible reasons for this. Plenty has happened since Wizards of Waverly Place ended, including Justin's marriage to a mortal woman named Giada and the birth of his two sons. Sadly, Justin also walked away from the life of a wizard following WizTech firing him over a mysterious unicorn incident.
Wizards of Waverly Place proved that being a wizard is highly genetic, though, so it's somewhat surprising that Roman and Milo hadn't exhibited any magic powers prior to Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, even with Justin no longer practicing magic. Of course, only the first 9 episodes of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place season 1 have been released, and although Wizards Beyond Waverly Place season 2 hasn't been confirmed yet, it could be coming.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place reboots a beloved Disney show, but the new cast has a lot in common with their predecessors from Wizards of Waverly Place. It's been more than a decade since Wizards of Waverly Place ended in 2012, and the subsequent one-off special, The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex, but now, the show is finally back. However, considering the time between the shows, the cast has grown up, and as a result, it wasn't possible to bring everyone back again.
Despite this, the new series, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, feels eerily similar to the original show, and for good reason. Throughout the series, several new characters are introduced alongside David Henrie, who returned to reprise his role as Justin Russo throughout Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. And while the characters may be new, it seems the show has repeated the formula for the earlier success, simply casting new characters in the roles of the originals.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place carries on the story of the Russo family years after the classic Disney Channel series and in certain ways, repeats it. Years have passed since siblings Alex (Selena Gomez), Justin (David Henrie), and Max (Jake T. That is until Alex shows up with a young wizard who is as chaotic as she once was and asks her brother to take the girl in and train her.

Selena Gomez’s career took off as she took on the iconic role of Alex Russo in the beloved Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” — and now she’s paying it forward with her TV brother David Henrie.
For years, the two friends would have wine nights and discuss what their characters would be up to as they grew up. “We kept talking about it!” Gomez tells Variety at the “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” premiere in Los Angeles.
“It was so organic. We never felt any pressure,” Henrie says. “The original fan should know there was never a mandate to be like, ‘We have to make this show, now’s the time to make the show.’ It just came to a point where we were like, ‘Maybe we got something here.'”
The two brought their revival idea to Disney and the full-fledged reboot, “Wizards Beyond,” received a 21-episode order for its first season.

Everything is not what it seems — even when it comes to what the original “Wizards of Waverly Place” characters are up to in the sequel series. Some of those updates are fairly surprising.
“Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” which premiered on Disney Channel on Tuesday night and will be streaming its first nine episodes on Disney+ come Wednesday, centers on a now-adult Justin Russo (David Henrie), who’s living a non-magical life — well, sort of, more on that momentarily — with his wife and kids.
When Alex (Selena Gomez) shows up with a new young wizard who needs help, Justin has a choice to make in order to help safeguard the entire wizarding world.
Yes, we see Justin and his sister reunited in the premiere episode, and their futures might just be exactly what you predicted — or not.
According to star David Henrie, “it was really easy” for him and Selena Gomez...

The Russo family returned to Disney Channel on Tuesday, and it’s fair to say that things have never been less what they seem.
Picking up where Wizards of Waverly Place left off more than a decade ago, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place reintroduces fans to former teen wizard phenom Justin Russo (played by David Henrie), now a married father of two living on Staten Island. We learn in the premiere that he has been living a mortal, magic-free existence ever since he was fired as the youngest headmaster of WizTech over something referred to as “the unicorn incident.”
