Netflix's New Korean Thriller With Squid Game Star Is Now Topping Global Charts In Second Week
Image
Squid Game changed the game for Netflix, big time. When the first season was released in 2021, it nearly instantly became an international sensation, popular both among Korean-speaking viewers and people across the globe watching it subtitled or dubbed in their own language. The series was also nominated for multiple Emmys.

Squid Game led to an increased interest in K-dramas on a global level, and Netflix made sure to capitalize on that audience trend. Earlier this year, the platform announced that they would be releasing 29 new K-drama titles, which would span both television and movies.

This has already proven to be a huge win for the platform. The K-drama series have done especially well, with shows like When Life Gives You Tangerines and Weak Hero Class 2 becoming big streaming hits. Squid Game season 3 also came out this year, which pulled decent numbers, but was not as well-liked as previous seasons.

‘Squid Game’ and Diego Luna are the year’s biggest Emmy snubs: Poll
Image
Hell hath no fury like a TV fan scorned.

Following the announcement of the 2025 Emmy nominations, Gold Derby users were outraged that several top contenders failed to hear their names called. Nearly half of the people we polled said that Squid Game was the biggest snub, having received zero bids for Season 2 after winning six trophies for Season 1 in 2022.

Among the list of snubbed Squid Game actors: Lee Jung-jae, who won the last time he was eligible for playing Seong Gi-hun (Player 456); Choi Seung-hyun as the villainous Thanos (Player 230); Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man; Park Sung-hoon as trans contestant Cho Hyun-ju (Player 120); Kang Ae-shim as protective mother Jang Geum-ja (Player 149); Park Gyu-young as Kang No-eul, the North Korean defector who's now a pink-clad soldier; and Gong Yoo as the Recruiter on the outside.

Showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk was overlooked for producing, writing, and directing Season 2 — he received all three noms...

‘Squid Game’ skunked at the Emmys: Here are all the nominations it missed for Season 2 — including Lee Jung-jae and Choi Seung-hyun
Image
Sorry, Squid Game fans — it's game over at the Emmys.

According to Gold Derby’s odds, Netflix's most popular show was never expected to match the 14 Emmy nominations it earned in 2022, but nobody predicted Season 2 would get completely shut out. Just three years ago, Squid Game was nominated for Best Drama Series and brought home six awards: Best Actor for Lee Jung-jae, Best Directing, Best Drama Guest Actress for Lee Yoo-mi, Best Production Design (“Kkanbu”), Best Stunt Performance (“Stick to the Team”), and Best Visual Effects (“VIPs”). Three years later, Squid Game's second season continued to captivate audiences, logging over 192 million views on Netflix — but totally flopped with Emmy voters.

Here are the categories the second missed.

Best Drama Series

With eight slots available for Best Drama, Squid Game was barely holding onto the eighth position. While the second season wasn’t as critically acclaimed as the first...

Why was the acting for the VIPs in Squid Game season 3 so bad?
Image
In the middle of Squid Game season 3, the character Geum-ja makes an impassioned plea to the remaining players to vote to leave the games, so they can save their own lives and the life of the baby who was born in the midst of all this chaos. Geum-ja, an older woman who just lost her son, is played by Kang Ae-sim, and her performance brought me near to tears. I think she was the standout actor on that season.

And then we would get a scene with the VIPs, the heartless billaionaires who get their kicks watching the players kill each other. I don't think I'm alone in saying that the acting for the VIPs was so wooden and lifeless that it took me straight out of the moment. I couldn't believe these VIP scenes were happening in the same show where Kang Ae-sim was giving multiple heart-breaking monologues per episode.

Squid Game Star Reveals Shocking BTS Fact About Player 120's Fate
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Queen of Tears and Squid Game season 3.One of the stars of Squid Game has revealed that they had much going on the day a pivotal scene was shot, making the final result all the more impressive. In contrast to the first outing, several of the main, named players survive Squid Game season 2's ending and are left to face additional rounds in the aftermath of Gi-hun's (Lee Jung-jae) failed rebellion in the final season.

One such player is Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon), who previously voted to continue the games to win enough money to pay off debts from her gender-affirming treatment and relocate to Thailand. However, after subsequently watching people die, Hyun-ju seems to be entirely focused on protecting her new friends, especially Jun-hee (Jo Yu-ri) and Geum-ja (Kang Ae-shim).

During an interview with Netflix K-Content, Park Sung-hoon revealed that the day he...

Did You Know Leonardo DiCaprio Was Hwang Dong-Hyuk’s Top Pick For Player 456 In The US Squid Game Universe?

Leonardo DiCaprio Almost Played Player 456 In The American Version Of Squid Game (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Squid Game, the popular survival K-drama, finally concluded with season 3 on June 27, 2025. Although people have been going crazy to believe that there will be a fourth instalment, the director Hwang Dong-Hyuk has already confirmed that there won’t be any more continuation of the main storyline. But that didn’t stop him from teasing the opening of a Squid Game universe with the American version.

At the end of season 3 (spoiler alert), we get to see Cate Blanchett in the streets of New York playing ddakji with an ordinary man, just like how we saw Gong Yoo do the same thing in the subways of South Korea to recruit the players of the game. This scene teased that the American version of Squid Game is in the making. Now, the director has revealed that Leonardo...

‘Squid Game’ Star Unpacks Her Character’s Sacrifice: “I Could Not Stop Crying”
Image
[This story contains Major spoilers from the Squid Game season three finale, “Humans are …”]

Squid Game is a story about sacrifice in order to achieve a better future. In the end, the third and final season of Netflix’s global mega-hit killed its protagonist so creator Hwang Dong-hyuk could deliver that message.

The finale, titled “Humans are…”, saw reluctant hero Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) sacrificing himself so that the baby of two deceased players in the deadly South Korean Games could survive. The baby’s mother, Kim Jun-hee, aka Player 222 (Jo Yu-ri), made the first ultimate sacrifice when, with a broken foot and unable to compete, she threw herself off a sky-high ledge and charged the then-alive Gi-hun to take care of her newborn baby, who was birthed during the prior game, in order to give her child the best shot at survival.

The irony is that the final game came down to Gi-hun and the baby’s father,...

"Is This Real?": Squid Game Cast Reacts To Season 3’s Major Hollywood Cameo For The First Time
Image
Warning: Major Spoilers ahead for Squid Game season 3.

The shocking cameo at the end of Squid Gameseason 3 gets first-look responses from several key Squid Game cast members, including Emmy winner Lee Jung-jae. Squid Game season 3 ended with a series of shocking twists, including the sacrificial death of Gi-hun, better known as Player 456, and the somewhat random surprise guest appearance of Cate Blanchett's Squid Game recruiter character.

After In-ho, the Front Man, leaves Gi-hun's daughter his original Squid Game fortune in Los Angeles, he spots Blanchett's recruiter playing ddakji with someone in an alleyway. Blanchett's character looks back at him with a sinister smile, which confirms to In-ho that even though the game has ended in Korea, it is still alive and well in the United States.

The official Squid Game Netflix Instagram account posted several Squid Game cast members' reactions to the surprise Cate Blanchett cameo. Lee Byung-hun, who plays In-ho,...

Squid Game Season 3's Best New Game Finds A New Use For Those Creepy Robot Dolls
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Squid Game."

Do you remember the large robot doll (named Young-hee) from the Red Light, Green Light challenge in "Squid Game?" Of course you do. This robot doll has been synonymous with the calculated cruelty of the games since season 1, representing the subversion of harmless childhood games into something wholly ominous. The Young-hee doll is, in fact, a wake-up call for every unwitting participant, as the gunshots which follow its roving eyes and singsong voice expose the true nature of the games for the first time. Season 2's iteration of the game also opens with Red Light, Green Light, resulting in the deaths of many despite Gi-hun's (Lee Jung-jae) desperate attempts to help everyone cross over safely.

You might also remember that the end credits for "Squid Game" season 2 hinted at a new game involving Young-hee, but this time, we also see a giant doll...

‘Represents All of Us’: Squid Game Creator Reveals Why This Player Became Season 3’s Final Villain
Image
This story contains Major Spoilers for Squid Game Season 3.

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk opened up about his decision to make Myung-gi/Player 333 the final villain of the third and final season. The character was played by actor and former K-Pop idol Yim Si-wan, who is best known for his roles in his South Korean dramas like Misaeng: Incomplete Life, The King in Love, Run On, and Summer Strike.

In Squid Game Season 2, Myung-gi was introduced as Player 333, a popular YouTuber who joined the game after getting involved in a crypto scam which left him and his viewers with massive debts. It was also revealed that he’s the ex-boyfriend of Jo Yu-ri’s Kim Jun-hee/Player 222, who entered the game despite already being nine-months pregnant with her and Myung-gi’s baby in hopes of securing her baby’s future. "I Thought She Would Last Longer": Fan-Favorite Character's "Heroic" Death In Squid Game Season 3 Addressed By Creator & Star
Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Squid Game season 3.

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and actor Park Sung-hoon break down the "heroic" death of Cho Hyun-ju in season 3. After being introduced as one of the new characters in season 2, Hyun-ju quickly stole the show and became a fan favorite thanks to her courageous and kind personality.

While Hyun-ju survives the events of season 2, she has one of the most tragic deaths in Squid Game season 3. After finding a way out of the hide-and-seek arena, Hyun-ju chooses not to escape on her own, and instead goes back for Kim Hun-jee (Jo Yu-ri), her newborn baby, and Jang Geum-ja (Kang Ae-sim), only to be stabbed in the back by Lee Myung-gi (Yim Si-wan).

While speaking with Netflix, Hwang refers to Hyun-ju's death as "heroic" and that her final moments "embody the essence of humanity." He explains that Hyun-ju's heroism is something that...

Squid Game Confirms Why Myung-gi Kills Hyun-Ju In Season 3 Episode 2
Image
Squid Game Season 3, Episode 2, "The Starry Night," revealed the dumb reason why Lee Myung-gi (Player 333) killed Cho Hyun-ju (Player 120). Myung-gi (aka Mg Coin) had luck on his side throughout the first three games despite having a target on his back due to being involved in a cryptocurrency scam in the outside world. His desperation grew even more after learning that his ex-girlfriend, Jun-hee (Player 222), was also a participant in the game and is pregnant with his baby. While he tried to be Jun-hee's knight in shining armor during the hide-and-seek game, his recklessness caused the death of another player who was only there to protect the mother of his child.

Netflix's trending South Korean thriller series returns for its final season as it explores the ramifications of Seong Gi-hun's failed attempt to lead a player uprising and stop the games in the Season 2 finale. Squid Game brings back 12 main...

Squid Game Reveals Why Player 149 [Spoilers] Herself in Season 3
Image
Squid Game Season 3 explained why Jang Geum-ja (Player 149) decided to kill herself after the brutal hide-and-seek game. Squid Game Season 2 introduced many exciting players, and one of the fascinating inclusions is the mother and son duo who became participants: Geum-ja (Kang Ae-sim) and her son, Yong-sik (Yang Dong-geun aka Player 007). Throughout the Netflix show's sophomore run, Players 149 and 007 endured and survived three horrifying games.

Ahead of Season 3, Geum-ja actress Kang Ae-sim let it slip that she only filmed her Squid Game scenes for six months instead of one year for the rest of the major cast members, potentially indicating that her character might bite the dust sooner rather than later. In Squid Game's final season, Geum-ja's fate was sealed after her son unexpectedly did something reckless against one of the players closest to her.

‘Squid Game’ Star Jo Yu-ri Unpacks Jun-hee’s Impossible Decision in Episode 4
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Squid Game” Season 3, Episode 4.

Once Jo Yu-ri learned what was going to happen in Season 3 of “Squid Game,” she felt that Jun-hee’s fate was “inevitable.” After giving birth in the middle of the hide-and-seek game, she knew that Jun-hee wouldn’t last long in the games. But that didn’t make her death any less emotional.

“Reading about her death was definitely shocking. I feel like it was an inevitable choice that came from her being backed into a corner,” Jo told TheWrap. “It was heartbreaking. That really motivated me to portray her as truthfully as possible.”

That dedication comes through in Jo’s portrayal of Jun-hee’s labor scene. The actor and former member of Iz*One noted that the birthing scene was “actually harder than I thought” and that she had doubts prior to filming it. To prepare for the scene, she asked several people for advice,...

Squid Game Season 3’s Most Unforgivable Death Only Happened for Something Embarrassingly Dumb
Image
Squid Game Season 3 left fans shook with its riveting finale episode. But there’s one devastating plot that came way before we got to the end. In just the 2nd episode of the 3rd installment, viewers are subjected to a tragic loss. Known for her kindness, strength, and integrity, Cho Hyun-ju’s death was definitely one of the most heartbreaking moments in the series.

Her choice to help the others was lauded, but the payoff was honestly very weak. All we got from her hero-level sacrifice was a CGI baby that’s since become the internet’s favorite punching bag. Out of every player in Season 3, Hyun-ju definitely deserved to be one of the survivors or at least die for a worthy cause.

‘Squid Game’ Star Kang Ae-sim Explains the Immense Guilt Geum-ja Feels After Shocking Season 3 Twist
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Squid Game” Season 3, Episode 3.

When “Squid Game” star Kang Ae-sim first read what happens to her character in Season 3, she was shocked.

“Geum-ja is a person who thinks only of her own son, but she ends up killing her son because she wants to protect another life, the newborn baby,” Kang told TheWrap. “She feels an immense amount of guilt after having killed her son. And without her son, she’s nothing, she’s empty and she’s lost everything.”

Geum-ja and Yong-sik (Yang Dong-geun) unknowingly entered the Squid Game as a mother-son duo. Yong-sik originally entered in the hopes of winning enough money to pay off his gambling debt, and Geum-ja followed suit, risking her own life to pay of the debts of her son. Squid Game season 3 ending explained: Who wins, does Player 456 survive, and that LA cameo
Image
Wow. What a wild ride! Squid Game season 3 is now streaming on Netflix, and I honestly still don't have the words to convey all of my feelings for what happened. The whole season was crazy, and the finale brought with it even more heartbreak. We were expecting it, but that doesn't mean it still didn't hurt. So how does it all end? Check out our Squid Game season 3 ending explained. Spoilers Below.

Does Player 456 survive and who wins the final Squid Game?: By the time we reach the finale, there's only three players left - Gi-hun (Player 456), Myung-gi (Player 333), and the baby who is now Player 222. When it comes down to it, there really aren't many options. Apparently, Myung-gi is willing to sacrifice his own child to win the money.

‘Squid Game’ Actor Park Sung-hoon on Hyun-ju’s ‘Holy, Sacred Moment’ in Brutal Episode 2
Image
Note: The following story contains spoilers from “Squid Game” Season 3, Episode 2.

Any fan of “Squid Game” knows the more beloved the character, the greater chance they’re going to die. That certainly put a target on the back of Hyun-ju, the trans contestant who comes to be a leader in Seasons 2 and 3, as well as one of the kindest and most level-headed players to ever appear in the Squid Game. But just because Hyun-ju’s death has a ring of inevitability around it that doesn’t mean that her loss wasn’t a blow to series star Park Sung-hoon.

“Lately, I’ve been playing a lot of villain characters, so Hyun-ju was a present to me because she is such a cool character,” Park told TheWrap. “She has a good moral compass. I thought she died a little too soon. It’s a shame that she died.”

‘Squid Game’ Series Finale: Who Survived and How the Final Scene Could Set Up a Spinoff
Image
[This story contains Major spoilers from the Squid Game season three finale, “Humans are…”]

The Squid Games are over — or are they?

The finale of the third and final season of Netflix’s global hit series Squid Game has now been released into the world, and the ending from series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk accomplished two things.

Hwang, who writes and directs every episode, delivered on his promise that this final season of his anti-capitalist thriller would conclude the story of protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae). The returning Player 456 met a tragic ending to conclude his second round competing in the deadly Games, which explains why Hwang said all along that the streamer’s most-streamed series would only be a three-season story.

During the final and fatal “Sky Squid Game,” Gi-hun went into the last round as one of three remaining players, along with Lee Myung-gi (Yim Si-wan), aka Player 333, and — in the series’ most evil twist to...

Squid Game: Season 3
Image
Streaming on: Netflix

Episodes viewed: 5 of 6

Squid Game galloped out of the blocks when it premiered in 2021. Right off the bat, we saw the drowning-in-debt Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) coerced into a deadly game of Red Light/Green Light, with the first season massacring contestants in almost every episode, folding in organ-harvesting, sadistic gold-masked billionaire patrons, and one of the worst hair makeovers imaginable. Now in its third and final season, the South Korean dystopian sensation remains entirely written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, and stands as a testament to an astonishing talent and work ethic that infamously saw the creator lose ten teeth across the production due to stress.

Dental sacrifices aside, what he’s created is nothing short of miraculous: an internationally adored show, at once thrilling, gorgeous, and satirically astute. Much like Gi-hun knowing how to play Red Light/Green Light, nailing Squid Game comes from knowing when...

Squid Game 3 Interviews: Getting Into The Finale Of This Epic Series
Image
Today, we see the release of Squid Game Season 3 (check out Alex Maidy’s review Here). As a massive fan of Battle Royale, I’ve always taken to Squid Game and found S3 to be a fitting conclusion. The concept is riveting, and it’s able to dissect the human condition in such an interesting way. Plus, it gave us Gi-Hun, who is one of the best fictional characters of the modern era. While it seems unlikely that this will be the actual finale (with David Fincher making an American version and there already being rumblings of spinoffs) this was a great sunset to the story of these characters.

I was fortunate enough to sit down with the cast of Season 3 in the most unique interview I’ve ever been a part of. First, there was Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, Lee Jung-jae, and Lee Byung-hun as they discuss some of the...

Squid Game season 3 episode 3 recap: Another devastating loss as the VIPs make the harshest move yet
Image
Gosh, I know this show is a binge watch but I still needed a few moments before going on to the next episode to first process what happened in Squid Game season 3 episode 2. It was quite eventful in the most heartbreaking and complicated way possible.

Jun-hee (Player 222) has her baby. To protect them both, Geum-ja (Player 149) kills her son Yong-sik (Player 007) with her hair pin. Plus, Hyun-ju (Player 120) lost her life when she came back for Jun-hee and Geum-ja. And our main character, Gi-hun aka player 456, he killed Dae-ho (Player 388). I mean, I still have no words.

Though we're here for what comes next, and this one is definitely another jam-packed episode that broke my heart a little more. Here's a recap of Squid Game season 3 episode 3, "It's Not Your Fault" on Netflix. Spoilers Below.

Squid Game season 3 episode 2: The baby is here, so many major players are eliminated (Recap)
Image
The first episode of Squid Game season 3 ended with the players getting ready to start playing the show's version of hide and seek. It's the most deadly one you'll see! Gi-hun (Player 456) is convinced that it's Dae-ho's fault (Player 388) that they failed in their revolution and now Dae-ho needs to hide, because Gi-hun is definitely seeking him.

I honestly don't even know where to start with season 3 episode 2, "The Starry Night" on Netflix. It takes us on such a wild ride with two major heartbreaking deaths that we didn't think would happen the way they did. Let's get into the recap. Spoilers Below.

Squid Game Season 3 Ending Explained: Life's A Rigged Game With No True Winners
Image
This post contains spoilers for Netflix's "Squid Game."

Sometime last year, season 2 of "Squid Game" ended on a baffling cliffhanger, adding fuel to the anticipation surrounding its third and final season. This anxious curiosity mostly revolved around Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who led a failed rebellion against the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and his recruits — an act that inadvertently led to several deaths, including that of his friend, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan). Season 3 picks things up right where they left off, mapping the aftermath of a botched rebellion that further exposes the cruelty of the game organizers. While a severely traumatized Gi-hun simmers in guilt, his dwindling allies struggle to hold on to their will to persist, as they're surrounded by callous players driven solely by greed and bloodlust. As expected, no amount of bloodshed is severe enough for these players to vote against the deathmatch, and they do so without remorse.

Squid Game season 3 episode 1 recap: Gi-hun knows who to blame for failed revolution
Image
We're finally back with the final season of Squid Game! It's so bittersweet that we've reached this point, but I'm ready to see how this amazing and nail-biting Netflix series comes to an end. Episode 1, "Keys and Knives," picks up right where the season 2 finale left off with Jung-bae (Player 390) shot by the Front Man.

Gi-hun (Player 456) feels very guilty and is not in a good place mentally, plus he still doesn't know that the Front Man is actually 001 as well. So what happens next? Well, the games must go on. The VIPs have arrived to get the horrible show that they want. Here's a recap of the season 3 premiere. Spoilers Below.

Squid Game recap and review: Season 2, Episode 3, "It's Not Your Fault"
Image
Watching the second season of Squid Game, I was a little disappointed that it seemed so merciful. The show is as thrilling as it is because anybody can go at any moment, and I didn't feel like enough characters were dying to keep up that tension.

Well, I shouldn't have worried, because they were saving all the heartbreak for this season. We pick up in the immediate aftermath of Hide-And-Go-Seek, easily the most brutal game this crop of players has been through. I thought we might get a break, but "It's Not Your Fault" shows that Squid Game has no interest in taking its foot off my neck.

We have yet another vote, and I admit I'm fed up: at this point, if the players vote to leave, they'll go home with over a million dollars each. Surely, surely that's enough to make it worth their while, especially since they...

"Squid Game" comes to an inevitable and somewhat underwhelming conclusion with season 3, made up of a group of episodes that really should be considered "season 2.0" rather than a whole new installment. The Netflix mega-hit from South Korea became a cultural phenomenon after it first arrived, probably because so many of us can relate to the series' themes of being desperate to get out of debt under the crush of capitalism. While season 1 built up a hellish world where cash-strapped contestants competed to survive deadly children's games for a big prize, seasons 2 and now 3 have an uber-cynical, extra unpleasant attitude spelling out what was perhaps the show's ultimate theme all along: when the chips are down, people are inherently horrible.

I don't even disagree with that assessment: people are often horrible! But for "Squid Game" to take us through three violent seasons and conclude in a manner that seems to be...

Squid Game Season 3, Episode 2: Hide and Seek, Shocking Death and More Explained
Image
The first time actor Kang Ae-sim walked onto the set of Squid Game Season 3’s Hide and Seek challenge, she was reminded of a Las Vegas casino. “Places like that have domed ceilings with lights that confuse the occupants if it’s daytime or nighttime,” she tells Tudum. “It felt uncanny and surprising on set to see things I never would have expected.”

Much like visitors to Sin City, Squid Game players are competing for a huge sum of cash in a disorientating labyrinth of colors and shapes — as well as cutthroat adversaries. Unlike in gambling dens though, losers won’t merely drain the contents of their wallet — they’ll forfeit their lives. Hide and Seek ratchets up the tension by giving players an ultimatum: kill or be killed by each other in a fatal game of tag. Squid Gamecreator Hwang Dong-hyuk enjoyed a similarly fraught dynamic...

Squid Game Season 3 Star Explains How Gi-hun Changed The Front Man
Image
Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun recently explained how playing the games with Gi-hun will affect The Front Man's motives in the upcoming third and final season of the hit Netflix show. For most of Season 2, The Front Man disguised himself as In-ho or Player No. 1 in order to gain Gi-hun's trust and manipulate him during the games.

Speaking during a Squid Game Season 3 press conference, Lee said he believes that his character's perspective changed after he had the chance to play with Gi-hun and the others. "I'm not sure how much of a change inside his emotional state you will get to see in Seasons 2 and 3, but when he sneaked into the game as this fabricated player, Young-il, it's all performance for him," the actor said via GamesRadar+. "But still, because he played all the games together with the other players and felt all those emotions together with them, I...

‘Squid Game’ Emmy predictions: Netflix’s most popular drama still in play for these categories
Image
When it comes to the 2025 Emmys, it's not yet game over.

The Netflix thriller Squid Game made a major splash at the 2022 ceremony, earning 14 nominations for its first season, including Best Drama Series. The show brought home six awards that year: Best Actor for Lee Jung-jae, Best Directing, Best Drama Guest Actress for Lee Yoo-mi, Best Production Design (“Kkanbu”), Best Stunt Performance (“Stick to the Team”), and Best Visual Effects (“VIPs”). Three years later, Squid Game's second season continued to captivate audiences, logging over 192 million views on Netflix — behind only the show’s record-breaking first season in 2021 (265 million) and the first season of Wednesday in 2022 (252 million).

According to Gold Derby’s latest odds, Squid Game is unlikely to match its impressive 14 nominations from Season 1. But are we underestimating this beloved series as it gears up to premiere its third and final season on June 27?

Everything to Remember from ‘Squid Game’ Season 1 and 2
Image
After taking the world by storm in 2021, the curtain is about to close on Hwang Dong-hyuk’s “Squid Game.”

Where Season 2 premiered over three years after its predecessor, “Squid Game 3” hits Netflix barely six months on the heels of that. Season 2’s characters, stakes, and cliffhanger might be fresh in the minds of many, but it’s worth revisiting details all of “Squid Game” ahead of its final hurrah.

In case you haven’t made the time to re-binge all of Season 1 and 2 (or even if you have!), here’s a refresher on what happened in “Squid Game” and what might be critical to Season 3. While most of the characters from Season 1 are dead, Season 2’s key players are still at large — but in terrible danger unless Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) succeeds in his master plan.

In Season 1, our protagonist was a little selfish, a bit bumbling, but...

Squid Game’s Pettiest Move Was Also Its Smartest, and Jun-Hee Calculated Perfectly
Image
In a brutal game of survival, Squid Game season 2 introduced an unexpected and complicated figure in the game. She captured both the audience’s empathy and strategic admiration. Kim Jun-hee, also known as Player 222, wasn’t the strongest player, but she was the most underestimated.

While some fans labeled her use of pregnancy in the games as petty, Jun-hee’s journey reveals something far more tragic. She made some bold choices, which prove she was one of the smartest players in the entire game. But ultimately, it was her survival instinct and probably a mother’s instinct that made her character so challenging and interesting.

Before she ever entered the games, Jun-hee’s life was already unraveling. She had trusted her boyfriend, Lee Myung-gi, a popular crypto influencer, who convinced her...

Squid Game Season 3: Geumja’s One Line Teaches Gihun the Truth He Keeps Avoiding Since Season 1
Image
Ever since Squid Game Season 1 graced our screens, Seong Gi-hun has been living in a state of delusion that he can somehow dismantle the system that once chewed him up and spat him out. Instead of moving on after his win in Season 1, Gi-hun has become obsessed with bringing down the people behind the notorious games.

But Season 3’s trailer showcases a brilliant scene that tries to pull him out of his delusion. Player 149 or Jang Geum-ja cuts through Gi-hun’s self-imposed mission and shows him the truth with a single piercing monologue. Some battles aren’t ours to win, and Geum-ja’s words hit home. With his heart set on saving every player that’s left, can we expect Gi-hun to make his way back to reality, or will he remain strong in his resolve?

Squid Game’s Hwang Dong-Hyuk Has a Twisted Master Plan And It’s Only the Beginning
Image
Squid Game has been one of the best Korean language shows on Netflix ever since its debut. The twisted reality TV show-esque drama has changed the way Korean dramas are looked at, and their influence has expanded even further across the globe.

However, the series will be coming to an end soon with its third and final season, but Hwang Dong-Hyuk, the mastermind behind Squid Game’s global domination, isn’t ready to close the door on his dystopian universe. In a recent interview, the creator revealed how he plans to expand the universe and unravel even more mysteries to keep the Squid Game world alive.

Image
Squid Game season 3 is right around the corner, with the globally popular phenomenon set to conclude with its final installment releasing later this month. Ahead of its premiere, the third season dropped a final trailer online, which shines the spotlight on Kang Ae-Shim’s Geum-ja.

Following the trailer’s choice of using Geum-ja in a specific style, I am now worried that the promotional material might be hinting at a grim fate for the fan-favorite character. However, Geum-ja deserves to make it out of the games alive, and fans like me will be wrecked if she does not. Here is everything you need to know about Geum-ja’s potential fate in Squid Game season 3.

Final ‘Squid Game’ Trailer Promises to “Put an End to It”
Image
Netflix is making sure that people know the final season of Squid Game is imminent.

Two weeks after releasing a trailer for the coming season at its Tudum fan event, the streamer followed up Friday with a second trailer. The third and final season of the Korean hit — Netflix’s most watched series to date, regardless of language — is due to premiere June 27.

The new trailer takes a somewhat more somber tone than the previous one, with quieter music and a voiceover from Jang Geum-ja/Player 149 (portrayed by Kang Ae-shim), who’s speaking to series protagonist Seong Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-jae): “Are you blaming yourself for everything that happened? No matter how you look at it, life is just unfair. Bad people do bad things, but they blame others and go on to live in peace. Good people, on the other hand, beat themselves up about the smallest things.

Does The Newest ‘Squid Game’ Trailer Reveal Gi-Hun’s Fate? (Video)
Image
Yet another new trailer for Squid Game‘s third and final season has been revealed by Netflix, and this time, it appears to give a major hint about what’s going to become of Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) in the last episode set. Like the official teaser trailer for the season, this new iteration shows Gi-hun waking up after being delivered back to the dorms in a coffin. The trailer is then interspersed with footage of some of the most tragic moments and characters from the first two seasons, as Player 149 a.k.a. Jang Geum-ja (Kang Ae-shim) gives him a pep talk. “Are you blaming yourself for everything that has happened? No matter how you look at it, life is just unfair,” she says in the preview. “Bad people do bad things, but they blame others and go on to live in peace. Good people, on the other hand,...

‘Thank you for dying’: ‘Squid Game’ creator, cast share deeper meanings of hit Netflix series, reveal on-set flower ceremonies for ‘killed’ actors
Image
It’s a good time to be alive for Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and stars Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Park Sung-hoon, Kang Ae-shim, and Choi Seung-hyun (aka T.O.P.) — even if not all of their characters are still alive at the end of the smash Netflix hit’s second season.

Beyond the modest feats of becoming a worldwide phenomenon and Netflix’s most-watched series ever, the South Korean import about a secret, deadly competition that lures 456 desperate people to risk their lives to entertain the uber-wealthy has also become a major awards threat.

Following its premiere in September 2021, Season 1 nabbed 14 Primetime Emmy nominations (including Best Drama Series), with Lee Jung-jae winning Best Actor, Drama and Hwang winning Best Director. Squid Game also made SAG Awards history, becoming the first non-English nominated for Best Ensemble, Drama.

Season 2 bowed to much fanfare in December, and, based on the latest Gold Derby odds,...

Squid Game stars are "very nervous" how people will react to the ending
Image
The third and final season of Squid Game will air later this month on Netflix, and the stakes couldn't be higher. Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is fighting for his life along with everyone else in the Squid Games, where only one person can walk away alive. Gi-hun would love to bust up the games from the inside, but the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) has thus far prevented that from happening. Meanwhile, the lives of new characters like Cho Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon) hang in the balance.

We'll know how it all ends very soon. "I am very nervous," Lee Jung-jae told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet for Netflix's Tudum event. "I know that a lot of you out there are curious about what’s going to happen in season three, but all of us are more curious about how much you’re going to enjoy it. So I can’t wait,...

‘Squid Game 2’ Cast on Connecting With Fans and Relating to Their Characters: ‘Thanos Isn’t A Villain, but He Is a Man-Child’

“Squid Game” creator, director and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk joined production designer Chae Kyoung-sun, editor Nam Na-yeong and director of photography Kim Ji-yong and members of the “Squid Game 2” cast for a panel and screening on Friday night that was part of Netflix’s Fysee LA series.

When it came to choosing which seemingly-innocent schoolyard games would become death traps in the second installment of his dystopian black comedy, Hwang says he looked for challenges that would force players to vote en masse.

“An important theme I wanted to explore in the second season was the notion of elections,” said Hwang. “So many free democratic countries around the world are choosing their leaders, and therefore their futures, through the act of casting a vote.”

“Elections exist to provide the right direction for society to head in, but as we all see, it’s actually leading people to even further division and...
