Every March, many people throughout the world celebrate Women's History Month. Women's history in cinema has been mixed: while it has often been a force for positive change, women have been underrepresented both behind and in front of the camera. For example, for decades women have filled less than one third of speaking roles and represent less than one third of named characters in movies. The movies below, however, have propelled our culture forward by featuring female leads.
