In film criticism, the auteur theory holds that a film reflects the director's personal creative vision. Auteurs are the film directors whose personal influence and artistic control over a movie are so great that they are regarded as the authors of the movie. Those directors tend to have a very specific, signature style that lets the audience know right away whose film they're watching.
