Disney's new streaming media service, Disney+ launched November 12, 2019 with the debut of The Mandalorian (2019) starring Pedro Pascal. It was the first of many "Star Wars" franchise live-action episodic series to be destined for the new subscriber service. DisneyPlus followed-up by adding The Book of Boba Fett (2021), Andor (2022), and Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) to its programming line-up. Other Star Wars live-action series greenlit for the streamer include Ahsoka (2023), The Acolyte (2024), Skeleton Crew (2024), tt13622774, and Lando. The two cornerstones of Disney's strategy to drive and maintain subscriber growth for its Disney+ streaming service are based on mining content from the 'Star Wars' and 'Marvel' franchises.
