- Attended Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. Attended and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree and master's degree.
- Don was a member of the Event Industry Hall of Fame, the Directors Guild of America, and the National Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences (NATAS), where he has served two terms on the Board of Governors.
- Don won a Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting and a Sports Award Emmy for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
- He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Television at 7013 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California on December 11, 2014. Walk of Fame inductees Jimmy Kimmel and Seth MacFarlane were guest speakers at the ceremony.
- Had four children: Heather Mischer, Jennifer Mischer, Charlie Mischer and Lily Mischer.
- He was only 9 years old when television came to his hometown in San Antonio, Texas.
- Mischer won 15 Emmy Awards (including 13 Primetime Emmys), a record 10 DGA Awards, a Peabody, two NAACP Image Awards, the 2012 Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television from the PGA, and the 2019 DGA Lifetime Achievement Award for Television, along with a slew of other accolades. In 2014, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
