Was longtime friends with Carrie Fisher whom he encouraged and helped prepare for her Star Wars: Episódio IV - Uma Nova Esperança (1977) audition. Their mothers (Debbie Reynolds and Rosemary Clooney) were known for their performances in such hit musicals as Cantando na Chuva (1952) and Natal Branco (1954).

Was very close to his cousin George Clooney.

Originally pursued a career as a musician. After seeing Little Ricky playing the drums on I Love Lucy (1951), he decided he wanted to learn to play the drums. His father, José Ferrer, who was already an accomplished pianist, encouraged him in this. He would later use this talent when traveling on tour with his mother Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby. It was not until Crosby's death that he decided to pursue acting. His career later came full circle when he worked with Denise Crosby on Crossing Jordan (2001).

Two members of his family have set records for memorable firsts among Hispanics. His father José Ferrer was the first Hispanic actor to win an Oscar, for Cyrano de Bergerac (1950). His cousin, Carlos Campo, son of his aunt Betty Clooney, is the first Hispanic President of Regent University.

Formerly played drums and sang in the Los Angeles band "The Jenerators" with actor and co-founder Bill Mumy.

He and Guillaume Depardieu were both the sons of Oscar-nominated actors (José Ferrer and Gérard Depardieu) who have played Cyrano de Bergerac. Both had also played younger versions of one of their father's characters: Miguel on Magnum (1980), and Guillaume in "Les Miserables" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". They were also both close friends of an actor who played The Crow: Brandon Lee and Vincent Perez.

His breakthrough role in RoboCop: O Policial do Futuro (1987) was released just a month after the release of Roxanne (1987). His next prominent role was on Twin Peaks (1990), which premiered shortly after the first European releases of Cyrano (1990). Both films were remakes of Cyrano de Bergerac (1950), which starred his father José Ferrer. David Lynch cast him in Twin Peaks after seeing his performance in Robocop.

His father Jose Ferrer passed away on January 26, 1992. Miguel Ferrer passed away on January 19, 2017, just one week away from exactly twenty-five years later.

Miguel O'Hara, the titular hero of Spider-Man 2099, was named after Miguel as his creator Peter David and Miguel had been good friends.
