When he was a teenager, he almost drowned in a surfing accident in Mexico.

Longtime friend of Dennis Quaid. They both attended the University of Houston and were drama students of Cecil Pickett, father of Cindy Pickett.

He graduated from the University of Houston in 1979. He spent four years with the Houston Shakespeare Festival. He owns a production company, with Meat Loaf, called "The Yellow Rose, Inc.".

As of 2020, he has been in 2 films that were Oscar nominated for Best Picture: Apollo 13: Do Desastre ao Triunfo (1995) and Coringa (2019).

Has a daughter, with his wife Michele Little, named Harper Cullen.
