The film is based on the memoirs of Charlotte Salomon's life entitled "Life? or Theatre?", featuring nearly 1000 of her autobiographical paintings and originally published posthumously in 1981. The original paintings are in the possession of the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam.
