There is no official confirmation from Nintendo or the movie makers about whether Mario and Peach will get married in later Mario Movie instalments. Princess Peach said that Mario's not important to the Toads because she was trying to protect him from Bowser's wrath. She did not think that Mario was a bad person, but she knew that Bowser hated him and wanted to eliminate him. By pretending that Mario was just a plumber who accidentally stumbled into the Mushroom Kingdom, she hoped to spare him from Bowser's attention. A new film in the franchise was officially announced on March 10, 2024. The announcement video seemingly went out of its way to not refer it a sequel-instead calling it "a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros."-but since then it has simply been called a "new Super Mario animated movie" (translated from Japanese) and the first film's directors are confirmed to return, so the film will likely be a sequel.

The film is expected to release on April 3, 2026 in the United States, and April 26, 2026 in Japan.
