President Roh is the symbol of democracy and of progressive politician yet a good target from the opposite party. A good quality documentary about him can make them uncomfortable. Look at how ratings are distributed. 40% of voters gave 1 or 2 stars, and there is no review why 'Our President' is that bad.
It is a well-made documentary film. Rather than focusing on his whole life, the director concentrates on Democratic party preliminary in 2002. Even though I know the results, the director manages to keep the tension showing graphs and supporters' reaction right after the results of each district. As President Roh's story is the main narrative, news and newspaper clips at that time appear to support the main narrative. I can tell the director really pays attention not only on moving people's emotion but also verifying actual events with facts and evidences.
What moves me the most is people's interview. How people remember him is affectionate and sentimental. The director tried hard to listen from various perspectives. Interviewees include not only his political allies but also friends, supporters, and journalists, so the audience can know who he is not only politically but also personally. Personally, his personal anecdote with his non-political friends are more heartrending and give better understanding of his political roots.
This film gathered the third most audience in the documentary genre in Korean history, and it should not be treated this unreasonably.
