Udayam Padinjaru

Its a relevant story even today . Srividya and Madhu are happily married with 3 kids in US . Their family friend Bharat Gopi is a wastrel always indulging in drinking and debauchery . Prem Nasir is their friend who is very responsible and never involves much in outings .

Gopi is married to a local American girl but is irresponsible about his family . There are always fights and squabbles between him and his women and his wife . He never cares about anyone or anything .

One day Srividya finds Madhu totally drink with some women in his house . Its all due to Gopi who sweet talks Madhu into such things. Without giving a chance to defend himself Srividya walks out with her 3 kids .

Defenceless and confused Madhu stays back .

Life goes on for all of them The children grow up in the same town . Srividya becomes a control freak controlling every aspect of her children's lives . She is scared to loose her children . Gopi becomes a vagabond begging and wandering on the streets .

Prem tries to mediate between Srividya and Madhu to unite them ,He becomes their close confidante .

Shobhana wishes to marry Ratheesh but Srividya is dead against it . She elopes anyway and marries him .

Both Srividya and Shobhana wear cotton sarees at home to show their domestic Indian status .

The second born son is in love with a nice American girl .Frustrated that he is not finding any jobs in US he wishes to go back to India. Srividya is against both these decisions .

He marries her and flies off to India much to her disappointment .

The third girl is in touch with Shobhana and meets her often . Shobhana is leading a fine life in the same town with Ratheesh .

When Srividya comes to know she throws her daughter out in sheer anger feeling back stabbed.

She runs to her father Madhu who is more than happy to help his third born out . He gives her a lecture about not antagonizing her mother.

Scared that her father will ask her to go back to her mother she runs away .

Sadly she turns prey to some predators and dies .

When this news is telecast on TV , Srividya faints due to shock .

Sad at her failed life , failed relations ,failed marriage , failed plans , failed future ...she lands up in the hospital due to heart break. She realises that her own controlling nature and haste was responsible for this .

When Madhu comes to know he visits her along with her two children . Leaving aside her own inner turmoils she extends her hand .

The family unites again .

All the veterans play their own ages . Prem Nasir's role is not required at all . He just comes once in a wile to show support to this warring family .

A lot of inner turmoils and confusions abound these Indians living abroad leaving their secure home towns. Most of them were first generation immigrants then .

The lives of the Keralite diaspora is shown a lot in this movie . Shobhana gets a solo dance recital which is a treat to watch . A couple of fine songs are thrown in .

Fully shot abroad , it shows the changing face of Indian family structure abroad a few decades back .
