It is undeniable that Miller's slant has shifted from more liberal to more conservative, and what amazed me was that he has done something I've never heard any other comic do, including "conservative comedians" like Brad Stine, and that is attack liberals with jokes and satire and defend conservatives and still make it funny.
For some reason it either hasn't existed or it has been elusive....but Miller is the first to figure it out.
I had more laugh out loud moments with "All In" than any other show he has done....but the right leaning rhetoric wasn't what was funny, in fact, the rhetoric actually served as the set ups to punchlines that were actually very apolitical.
For the sake of full disclosure I would describe myself as a conservative....I do, however, as an avid comedy fan from childhood and amateur comic, consider myself pretty fair minded when it comes to comedy and what is funny (I am a David Cross fan, and he could be considered the yin to Miller's yang...THAT is how even handed I can be).
That said I highly recommend "All In"...I think it is groundbreaking for comedy...whether it is recognized as such or not.
by now his trademark verbosity and mind-boggling referential skills are so well established they can no longer carry his routines like they once did... and so it comes down to the subjects of the jokes. and that's where the trouble really lies. a joke about the only problem with the war in iraq is the fact that soldiers are being forced to follow the rules of engagement? a series of jokes about his doubts on the existence of global warming? jokes about howard dean, robert byrd, and anyone else who hasn't toed party lines? has bill o'reilly begun writing material for him?
there was a brief period -- say, early to mid 90's -- when miller seemed poised to step into the stand-up pantheon and take his place among the greats (richard pryor, lenny bruce, bill hicks, et al), but apparently somewhere along the line the devil showed up early to claim his soul. now he's become a pathetic jester for the fox news set.
truly sad.
He is very anti political correctness. He is refreshing and original, compared to the old worn out spots where people bash the nation and President Miller takes it a step further and says things that many of us think but are a bit shy to utter in public.
Well worth watching. If you have thin skin then perhaps it is not for you. If you whine because someone is not political correct or someone dares to go against the status quo of the clone comedians you may not like Dennis Miller. But for those of us who want something new and refreshing it is wonderful.
