Pretty great representation of the Tim Winton novels. Really captured the feel and humour of the books. I'm not sure which is better, the books or the show. I'm sure they had loads of fun making this. Wonderful to know that Sean Keenan (Lockie) and Clarence Ryan (Egg) have gone on to successful adult acting careers.

My wife and I (in our 60's) enjoy watching this series. We have watched the original screenings and the repeats. Hoping that they make another series. This more than a kids programme, it is funny, thought provoking and just good fun to watch. There was a three year gap between series one and two with luck they are making a new series for screening next year. I would recommend this series to anyone. It loses nothing in the repeat viewing. The acting is good, the casting excellent, the location beaches out of this world and the script writers have really got it down pat. I doubt if such a place as Angelus really exists but if it did I would love to live there.
I'm finding this quirky show late in life. Started watching at the recommendation of a friend and completely expected to hate it. The funny thing is, it is cute enough to get you to pay attention and the topics are enough to keep you interested. The show has a strong relevance that hit close to home more than once for myself and it made me sad when I reached the final episode. I rated this 9 out of 10 simply because the run felt like it ended prematurely. If I were to guess, either the books it was based on had been fully covered or, the series had difficulty with ratings. (There was a full year gap between seasons so it is possible.) The acting was perfect to maintain the feel of the series and it's off balance humor, the location was perfect to maintain the small town in the middle of nowhere, and the beaches and surfing were a fun bonus that made Lockie admirable and relatable as the show's lead. Overall, I recommend this show to anyone who enjoys smiling.
This is probably the worst show I have ever seen in my life, the acting is horrible, story/script is horrible, the cast is horrible and it has narration.

for some odd reason this show seems to have attracted a very low score on IMDb...perhaps it reflects a generation raised on garbage television such as big brother.
As a 20 year old, I am hardly in the key demographic for this show...yet, having purchased and watched the DVD boxed set, I find it charming... it is quite possibly the best Australian made show in years, it's a remarkably well acted dramedy focusing on a year in the life of thirteen year old lockie Leonard, and his family, in what could best be described as a coming of age series in the vein of 'the wonder years', 'degrassi' and 'freaks and geeks' though not quite reaching the heights of that latter masterpiece. It also, thankfully, lacks the 'life lesson of the week' feel that degrassi, though also an entertaining show, often can't quite conceal.
the scripts are consistently funny, and entertaining, and the production values are solid... It is an appalling tragedy that this series only lasted one season, though from all I've been able to discover, it was never intended to run longer...so it's not an issue of cancellation.
I'm not going to delve to deeply into plot points, since this show deserves to be watched with no prior spoilers... but it suffices to say that this is a quirky dramatic comedy which doesn't dumb itself down for it's intended younger audience and isn't afraid to tackle difficult issues, thus making it an entertaining viewing experience for all ages.
