At only 11 years, Jim is a gifted boy passionate about space and science. Arriving in a new town with his dad, Jim has to participate in a young scientist competition with his new classmate Emma, a sensitive and discreet girl. Despite her reluctance, Jim convinces her to imitate Kittingers Excelsior
project (first man to reach the frontier of space in 1960) and to build secretly a real air balloon. This calling comes from his father, Graham, an astrophysicist who was meant to carry out a space mission very soon. Since Jims mother died, this project is very important to him. But when he discovers Graham has given up without telling him, his world falls apart. The competition turns into an obsession and Jim wants to prove unlike his father that he won t give up. Jim pushes Emma to her limits and drags her into an adventure which is going to bring them closer.

Beautiful movie

Just came from the screening and it was a truly beautiful movie... There were a few scenes where it could've been better, and it was a bit slow paced, but the ending was worth it and it made me tear up... Hard recommend!

What an ending!

I saw this movie at TIFF. Although it was advertised as a children movie, I thought the ending is too sad and touching for the little ones. This is a story about loosing someone close, about how you cope with grief. It can be fun for kids but grownups will see so much more. Congrats to the director.

To Infinity and Beyond

Unlike other viewers, I would definitely class this as a kid's movie. There were a number of overused kid-movie tropes that no one would employ in a movie intended for adults.

The two lead kids were both quite talented; the other kids, less so. The adult characters tended to be very one-dimensional, as in most kid movies.

On the whole, I wouldn't bother to go unless you are taking the kids. If you do have kids to take, it is by no means painful to watch and the movie will definitely leave you with some things to discuss with them.
