I want to start off by saying that I don't understand the negative reviews? Maybe the film just wasn't for you.. I on the other hand found it lovely.
We get to follow a few people on the same day, when they go about their lives and what they are expecting of the "Midsummer Eve", that is the day - the longest day - when the sun really doesn't set. I love that - especially a drunken scene taking place in bright sunlight. It's such a contrast to what you'd think it should look like.
I feel that the stories align. The different characters that is. We see why something happens depending on what someone else did. Why a bad dream occurs. What part the stones play. Why the escalator isn't in place. I love that it's giving us reason to think. It really portrays 'normal' people, I feel, and I love it.

This film is supposed to tell about the Finnish minority in Sweden. Weirdly nobody speaks Swedish anywhere. The Finnish cultural aspects are not addressed, or is the fact that some people drink beer in the morning the only Finnish stereotype the makers could think of? The name "the longest day" definitely describe how long the movie feels. I am sorry, but I completely did not understand why this movie was made at all.
It is not really possible to write a summary of the film because it cannot be called a film. The script is only a patchwork woven together of many different small stories that have nothing to do with each other and there is never a semblance of an overarching plot except in the last scene when all the characters gather at the village's May bonfire.
It is unclear what the film is trying to tell or if it is even trying to tell anything because it feels like you are watching several different films at the same time.
However, everything is not a disaster, there are some nice nature scenes in the film.
