Denícek moderního fotra

I was made to watch this movie, when we were expecting our first child and I can recommend the experience to any soon to be parents as it depicts with a bit of humor what the next couple of months might look like.

Denícek moderního fotra roughly translates to "a diary of a modern dad" and as such is a loose adaptation of a successful Czech blog of a cynical, witty, sarcastic stay at home dad. The plot revolves around a pair of young people who engage in a one night stand that results in an unplanned pregnancy and how they decide to handle the situation. Being that the mother has a better paid job, they do the reasonable thing where the father stays at home with the child. What follows, is a comedy depicting the struggles of fresh parents in the 21th century. A lot of the commentary and situations are an overblown caricature of the reality which in my opinion serves the comedy. The jokes are handled well with the actual look and feel of the movie being done better than is usual for a Czech comedy. I find the overall rating of this movie here on IMDB a bit unfair, seeing as most recent Czech comedies are low effort productions, often cringy and generally just pretty bad. This movie actually shines as being done competently enough to actually end up being entertaining. Mind you, I think a rating between 6-7 would feel fair compared to other stuff, compared to other recent Czech comedies, I am inclined to give more.
