The original draft, written solely by James Fraser before rewrites, differed greatly from the source material as it saw Irene Adler killed by Russian radicalists. The writer left a YouTube comment on the episode detailing how the theme of the episode was Holmes' arrogance getting the better of him as instead of letting Adler beat him in a game he told the Russians where she was, thus forcing him to change as a character when he sees this egotism led to the death of an innocent woman.
