Sult 2020

City of Tigers (originally "Sult 2020") is an updated adaptation of Knut Hamsun's Nobel Prize-winning novel "Hunger". This is the fifth feature film from the multi-talented Norwegian musician, chef, and cinema-owner Jan Vardøen.

A gifted artist (played by Jonathan Chedeville) goes through the same journey, hunger, and pain in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, as in 1890, but now during the COVID pandemic in the winter of 2021.

It's just before Christmas, and the artist i simply begging for help, without really daring to beg. Totally out of money, shameful about his poverty in a city full of people without any empathy for a struggling man.

Trying to keep his spirits high and hold up his appearance in the meetings with different people around in the city, he simply tries to keep his head above water.

Quite inspired by the 1966 masterpiece of a film, Hunger, it gives, at the same time, a good depiction of Oslo in 2020. The humiliation of being poor in a rich society is immense. Good, though not the best of Vardøen's movies.

This movie was made available in 2025 when it was released on interregional (region-free) Blu-Ray Disk by Norwegian Film Classics as the 65th release in a new series with classics, NFK0065, with subtitles in English, and is supposed to be held in stock for film lovers.
