People who dismiss this effort must be getting their laughs somewhere other than either film or tv because ... where are they? Where HAVE all the comedies gone?
But I suspect those folks don't laugh a lot -- in general.
This is a good-natured buddy movie without major surprises and some cheeful cameos by a friendly ensemble.
To be fair, there is a "best friend" so lacking in charm it made spotting the gender of the author a bit too easy.
But other than that, it's may not be cinema fare, but it is a streaming snack well worth enjoying.
She is just as delightful as in the Brooklyn Nine-Nine character that made her such a broadcast favourite. He is a litte too low-energy at times, and his character could have benefited from a few more actual zingers.
But hey. I was starving and this briefly fed me. So I give thanks and laughter in return.

This has got to be one of the most boring "comedies" I've seen in a long time. The jokes, what few there were, were lame. The chemistry between the characters was nonexistent. This might have made an ok 30 minute TV show, but there is no way it should have ever been made into a full, feature-length film. As a matter of fact, the whole issue with "whose bar it is" could have been solved really simply if they'd both just ignored each other or even just stayed on opposite ends.
What there two ever saw in each other in the first place - the whole, overdone overweight, frumpy, "every-man" scores beautiful, out-of-his-league girl notwithstanding - they have nothing at all in common. That they broke up without even a single cross word between them... yeah. No. Then you bring in the girl's best-friend. She has got to be the most annoying, obnoxious, crass person alive. Again... nothing in common between her and Melissa (the main girl), either.
Of course, the required reading was there... both the main guy and the best friend's husband are portrayed as the perfect "house husbands" - within the first five minutes, Melissa literally says that exact thing about Luka, her ex-boyfriend. When Luka tells the annoying best friend that she is, in fact, mean, she cuts him off and asks if he's going to call her "opinionated," "bold," "overbearing" because of course, he's sexist. When Melissa is walking back to her car, Luka asks her if she wants him to walk with her - you know, as a gentleman to make sure that she gets there safely - she looks at him in disgust and declares "sexist!" practically spitting the word out of her mouth.
Do yourself a favor and skip this. Not even the big names (relatively speaking) could save this dumpster fire.

This movie plays ike a National Lampoon film (after they made all the good ones and started making trash with the NL name on them) only updated to today's lingo.
Actually it's a level above those NL movies, but not by much. The characters are all fast talking people making silly predictable jokes that arent actually especially funny.
Throw in some dumb humor like the one about plastic straws and you can anticipate every line in the film.
It's competently, if inexpensively, made and the acting is fine. The movie's downfall is the script which just isnt all that funny. It's like a facsimile of a comedy written by someone who isn't all that talented and only knows comedy from other movies they've seen.
Byt the time the first third is done, you will be either bored or annoyed. There is nothing new or original in it.
If you want some background noise from a movie that sounds like every other movie in this genre then go for it.

Um yeah ok, 18 minutes in this became stupid officially. This movie doesn't soar but it tries to. Rachel Bloom has become massively oversized since that show about the Crazy Ex-Girl Friend. You can tell it's going to be a chore to watch. Here's what you do. You just either turn up to the bar whenever you want, or you don't. It's pretty simple. Since he found the bar it should be his and as a lawyer she should acknowledge that fact. Anyway back to the "review". The movie is what it is. It's light hearted. It tries to be quirky and different. It could be enjoyable in the right light of day. The biggest issue is that is starts out with a breakup in which nobody fights. So we're in fantasy land right off the bat. And there just isn't enough material to have a whole movie based on who gets a bar. Also the black guy has the most weird haircut. It's just plain stupid looking hair. Ultimately the thing about this film is that it's a breakup movie and that's never something to get excited about. It's a downer of a film and I'm calling it a 3/10.
I feel like the events and key moments for this film weren't well planned or executed. There were some surprising scenes once in a while, but there just wasn't enough excitement in them and when there was, it quickly faded out. On one minute I was happy that something happened and then the next minute it gets taken away. Kinda upsetting.
A few songs in between scenes would have made a huge difference, but instead there were waaay too many silent scenes that weren't even interesting. A good soundtrack would have set the tone for the film and given more emotion to it.
It's a pitty though, cause the plot seemed kinda fun and most actors are great. It just really lacks some action and more interesting characters. For a comedy movie, there should really be some funny/happy scenes. I didn't come close to laughing once.
