Ugravatara is an ambitious mythological drama that plunges deep into the unexplored realms of Indian folklore, weaving a tale of rage, redemption, and the eternal conflict between dharma and adharma. Directed by Anirudh Deshpande, the film is a visual spectacle that leaves a lasting impression, though not without its flaws.

Set in an ancient kingdom torn by greed and tyranny, Ugravatara narrates the story of a village priest, Rudraksha (played by Vijay Varma), whose unwavering devotion invokes the manifestation of an ancient, fearsome deity - Ugravatara - to protect the oppressed. But as the deity's fury grows uncontrollable, Rudraksha must choose between blind faith and the welfare of his people.

The strength of Ugravatara lies in its stunning world-building. The cinematography by Sudeep Chatterjee is breathtaking - from mist-covered forests to elaborately designed temples, every frame feels like a painting brought to life. The VFX team deserves praise for bringing the mythical aspects alive, especially during the climactic sequences when Ugravatara's wrath engulfs the corrupt kingdom.

Vijay Varma delivers a standout performance as Rudraksha. His transformation from a calm, idealistic priest to a conflicted man battling the consequences of unbridled divine fury is deeply moving. The layers he adds to his character - faith, fear, guilt - make Rudraksha relatable, even in such a larger-than-life setting. Supporting him is Sayami Kher as Devika, a healer who acts as Rudraksha's moral compass. Her subtle yet powerful acting gives the film its emotional core.
