Somewhat inspiring

I never knew this was a true story until I read a few reviews here. The fact it was a true story inspired me watching. The only part I knew that was true is that this was a real little league team I didn't know about the father at all.

Now the set up for this team being a bunch of bodies who were just bad at baseball, I don't know If it is true. It was nice seeing that the team came together even though honestly that just wasn't well played out in the script. It kind of just happened.

They start playoffs and they literally showed us literally literally literally nothing after their first game until they're magically in the World Series. That's a really lame script. That is really really lame.

You know I wanna see how the kids felt and acted after their first game or any other game up until the World Series. They showed us nothing.

It's only good because the story of a bunch of nobodies making the World Series and watching the effect that dad has on them is inspiring. But the script was really, really poorly played out.

A bit inspired

6.8 stars.

This is the story of a coach and his best friend coaching a team of little leaguers in Texas. They are about the worst team around. The coach gets sick. The kids get inspired, they drastically improve and make it to the 2002 Little League World Series. It's quite an inspiring story albeit somewhat misleading.

The film portrays the boys as scrawny, weak and terrible players, but if you look at some of the actual footage, they were average to above average sized, and actually quite good. This is not a bad news bears story. I think the Director wanted to make it appear that way to make the impression of them being underdogs. This is for obvious reasons in the movie biz.

This film is slightly inspired, but only average for entertainment and impact.

Who was this made for exactly?

Looking for something to see, I was intrigued by the premise of misfit little leaguers. Could this be an updated The Bad News Bears?

Nope. It's a whitewashed family film scrubbed of any edge, predictable beyond belief, and boring.

It was hard to find what the appeal would be for either adults of children.

This a true story that is supposed to be inspiring but instead is a poor tribute to the brave coach the film is honoring.

Greg Kinnear looks bored and tired. Luke Wilson fares better but the sappy script lets him down. The kids make little impression. The film builds no tension and you basically know how it will end after the first 20 minutes.

The film is also weirdly lit, and poorly edited.

I was the only one in the theater on the opening night preview. When a film opens quietly with almost no marketing, there is a reason.

An Inspiring Message , But Poorly Made Movie

The message of a young team rallying behind a powerful emotional cause that pushes them beyond what they think is possible is always one that I will be drawn to and interested in. The fact that it's a true story makes it very tragic.

However, the film does not at all do such a true story justice. The script is extremely poor and the characters take a long time to connect with. The idea is that the team is supposed to be a really bad baseball team and has no hope at all as a fill in team for a spot in the Little League World Series. There's brief moments of them practicing but we aren't really shown the evolution of the kids as players or really how they've matured as individuals while dealing with the personal matters the one family faces on the team. Yes , they do say lines that suggest they have matured, but without actually seeing it play out much ourselves it feels like the lines are forced in to make the plot work.

There are also many confusing lines along the way that distract or take away from the main message of the movie. In particular the friendship between the coach's feels odd. I'm not sure if it's cast selection or the acting quality. In general the head coach who is an attorney seems to get more screen time than is warranted.

Overall , it's a touching story but maybe a book would have been a better format to tell the story so that people can appreciate the details better.

Gotta Luv Gotta Believe

It won't mean the same to those that haven't experienced this in real life but obviously those who actually lived this story I appreciate you sharing this and I'm inspired to play on as I continue to believe and play the game almost 60 years after my little league all star dreams.

Many a championship since then but the confluence of my father's influence and the joy of coaching my son have etched an enormously important memory in my life.

So they won't let me get away without commenting on the movie itself. Luke, Greg, Sarah and all the kids give outstanding performances. The on field action is realistic enough to relate.

One of the worst baseball movies ever?

I wasn't expecting much when I went to see this movie, based on its trailers. Yet even with those low expectations, I quickly found myself bored and disappointed. My five star rating is probably being generous. The film had poor writing, poor camerawork and editing, and overall was very predictable. When the worst parts of a baseball movie are its baseball action scenes on the diamond, there is something wrong. If you combined aspects of "The Bad News Bears" with "Facing the Giants", this film might be the result. It is certainly aimed at more of a family audience, though probably more to older elementary and middle school-aged kids, due to a serious medical topic faced.

it wants to be The Bad News Bears

It's 2002. Bobby Ratliff (Luke Wilson) and Jon Kelly (Greg Kinnear) are coaches of a terrible Little League team in Texas. When nobody else wants to compete, they are asked to participate in a game which leads all the way to the Little League World Series.

This is based on a true story and that may be part of the problem. The true story requires the movie to center on Bobby Ratliff's ordeal whereas it is desperately trying to be The New Bad News Bears. They just need to get that girl pitcher. The kids are not able to distinguish themselves. It's the name Rocket, glasses, and skirt chaser. To be clear, that's all I truly remember from the three main kids. Don't even mention the rest of the team. This needs to be their movie, but it is not completely that. Ultimately, it is a problem that cannot be overcome.

I believe and was touched

This movie was lovely and you could tell it was true as no hollywood fluff was added. We need small Movies like this to have balance and not just blockbusters. I liked all the kids and the main actors were totally real. The moral is what we all teach our children so seeing people Live it touches the heart. Every family should want to see this film. I recommend it. Not a bad news bear which was all fake. Just a Good movie. Good storytelling and real people with real feelings. These movies will go away and we will only see blockbusters or crude or horror films if we don't support the family films.

I BELIEVE

I'm not a baseball fan, but am a fan of inspirational movies based on true stories and this movie fills the bill. I thought the acting was incredible and the story touched my soul. Of course, it won't win any awards because only weird themes seem to garner that kind of attention these days but you will be thinking and smiling about You Gotta Believe long after its run at the box office. I am seeing YGB for a second time today. I hope the writer will continue finding worthwhile topics to bring to the screen. He seems to have the knack of making a sad situation into a "feel good" outcome. I've always been a fan of Greg Kinnear and think he was perfect for the role he played. More Lane Garrison/Greg Kinnear movies, please!!!

Honest. Tragic. Inspiring.

It's more for older kids and adults with heavy and undeniably inspirational moments. It's about believing in something and allowing it to help carry you through something impossible. The Kelley's were a force every time they were on screen. "Robert" was endearing and honest. "Peanut" was light hearted and balanced the scenes without being too much. The boys had a sweet relationship with each other that felt very real. Luke Wilson portrayed the father as reserved and hands on without being overbearing. Very salt of the earth. The boys individually who played the ball players held their own well. They were very believable in their efforts to support and be there for the Ratliff boys at their young ages. Nothing felt frilly or dishonest. The jokes the players had on the team were cute without feeling out of place. The way the story approached life's hardest realities was refreshing and didn't overreach for what a child's reaction or understanding would be. They let there be so much room for emotions. It was raw and beautiful.

Believe in this story

I do not understand the negative reviews on this? One stated, " it's predictable". Of course it is, you can literally google the outcome that happened in real life if you already did not know. That's like like watching the moving Pompeii and being surprised at the ending.

You gotta believe is a phrase stamp among all sports. The NBA,MLB,NFL and so forth use this exact phrase when there team makes a miraculous run. In high school, our football coach died , we were 0-11. The next year, that season was dedicated to him and we lost in the championship game going 12-1. Guess what our motto was? Yep, Believe.

This story is nothing more than a team of 12 yos rallying around there coach and dad who has been diagnosed with cancer. Yea, hollywood changed it up a tad bit but nailed it with the story. Its inspiring, emotional and of course predictable (because it's a true event). Its very nostalgic if you ever had to experience this sort of situation in team sports as a kid. Its very emotional and brings back some great and sad memories.

Foe the person who had an issue with the team having a verbal spat with a rival team, it actually happens in real life. Its boys being boys, girls being girls. I

Watch the film and if you do not know the history, then Google after watching it. Truly is one of the greatest LLWS series games ever played.
