Mark, Please Fire Your Agent

What exactly happened to Mark Wahlberg? He used to headline solid films like Shooter, The Departed, and even did great in comedy with The Other Guys. But lately, it feels like he signs up for every bad script that lands on his desk.

Play Dirty is just another forgettable entry on that list. Mark has the money and the reputation.. so why waste it on these throwaway projects? Honestly, the probability of him starring in a good movie these days feels like 1 out of 10, and that says a lot.

What is his agent even doing? Isn't their job to filter scripts and protect his career? Instead, they're turning him into a running joke. Mark deserves better, and so do we as the audience!

Such a waste of great talent

Such a waste of great talent. It's like a bunch of fifth graders wrote and directed this convoluted plot-hole riddled nonsense. There were so many pointless scenes that seem like they should matter, but never do (e.g. Why always room 12?). Then it jumps between a serious tone to a lame comedy, like an failed SNL skit that didn't make the cut. Never mind the lack of any real plot advancement in between the useless scenes, the ridiculously slow pacing and overlong runtime. Don't even get me started on the horrible editing, especially in the first scene which set the stage for this messy nonsense. It's a generous 5/10 all for the all star cast doing their best with the garbage the filmmakers gave them to work with.

Shane Black returns to the genre he masters to perfection

Shane Black returns, this time with Amazon Studios and MGM, to bring us a crazy heist comedy with a charismatic cast led by Mark Wahlberg.

With a cast that includes Lakeith Stanfield, Rosa Salazar, Keegan-Michael Key, Nat Wolff, and Tony Shalhoub, the film takes us through a series of heists with the characteristic humor of a director who perfectly balances comedy and action. Shane Black delivers an entertaining action comedy reminiscent of those fun '90s movies. Packed with action, chases, and some truly effective gags, this film succeeds in its goal of entertaining. While it may not be entirely coherent, its charming cast makes it all quite believable.

Black adapts Donald E. Westlake's classic anti-hero into an entertaining and well-crafted adventure, starring Mark Wahlberg who masters this type of character. While his performance is fine, he's surrounded by a charismatic cast, always conveying the sense of enjoyment on screen. The director recaptures some of the essence of his prime, albeit a few notches lower, but it's still a good impression for someone who has always been fun to watch in his work.

It's a made-for-streaming movie, something that's noticeable in its visual effects, though it's not overly distracting. The film is entertaining and makes for a good weekend getaway. It has some very funny sequences where the director manages to show his essence, and others that are somewhat weaker, but that doesn't detract from the overall entertainment value. It's an action comedy with ups and downs, but always sincere in its intention to entertain the viewer with its most authentic elements, and it achieves this in a pleasing and effective way.

Afterwards, we can enjoy it if the film lives up to all our expectations. However, it won't waste your time, as at least you'll have one pleasant moment on screen.

The Definition of Middling

Ultimately, Play Dirty is fine. It clocks in at a slightly bloated two hours, offering moments of mild entertainment and professional craftsmanship, but lacking the originality or emotional depth to leave a lasting impression. It's the kind of film you'll forget you saw a week later, but won't regret watching while you were in the theater. If you are desperate for a weekend diversion and all the good seats are taken, Play Dirty will, well, play. But don't expect it to redefine the genre.

The worst first 10 minutes of a movie I've ever seen

I've never seen a movie where the first 10 minutes are THAT bad. This is a Mark Wahlberg cash grab. I don't understand why they kill people so mindlessly as if there are no repercussions to their actions. Any common sense of reality is thrown out the window. You have to turn your brain off to make it through the whole movie. With this kind of budget and cast you could have done much better.

Decent enough

There's a good movie in here somewhere. But it's a bit of a con really. As on the surface "Play dirty" is more modern streaming "content" than anything else.

I had no idea it was based on the book character Parker. A character who has already had his stories adapted multiple times. This one's an original story so I'm not sure it matters. But it could possibly be an attempt at starting a series of movies, and it feels like it is. The plot has alot of ins and outs, but got more clever toward the end. Overall though there was too much bad green screen action.

What really saves the movie is Shane Black's trademark style. There's some decent banter between the characters so its passable as a comedy. But could have been so much better if it was more focused and old fashioned. Like the books its based on.

Enjoyable afternoon action flick

7/10

It won't blow you away but I would say this is a great film to watch if you want some decent action and some decent comedy.

It has some unexpected twists and turns throughout and you can't always guess what's going to happen next.

The cast is excellent and it's always nice to see Tony Shalhoub (monk) back on screen again.

If you want a decent, enjoyable action flick then I'd say you won't go amiss watching this!

Dumpster Fire

Do yourself a favor. Avoid this one.

If you like Mark Wahlberg, avoid this one. I don't know who lied to him about this movie, but holy cow, it's bad.

I had to turn it off because i was cringing so hard at the abysmal writing and the terrible acting.

Terrible pacing. I don't even know what the greater plot is because i couldn't stand the torture of watching it anymore. I only clicked in because it was Mark Wahlberg and he's a guilty pleasure ever since Shooter.

Seriously, 3 writing credits on this movie and it's STILL THIS BAD.

Please don't waste your time.

A Very Fun Watch

Mark Wahlberg's latest film, Play Dirty, is a delightful mix of subtle and slapstick comedy that will have you laughing out loud. Wahlberg nails the role with his usual charm, delivering both quick-witted one-liners and perfectly timed physical comedy. The humor is smart and often understated, giving the movie a light-hearted tone without ever feeling forced. With a solid blend of slapstick moments and clever jokes, Play Dirty keeps the audience entertained from start to finish. It's a perfect pick for anyone in need of a good laugh-definitely worth the watch!

Fan of the books...

This is a strange take on the parker books, miscast and the wrong genre. There's only one trait that the protagonist shares with parker and that is that he's a killer.

The film is fine for wasting a couple of hours on an action movie, it morphs into a james bond/fast and furious clone and does so competently.

A few laughs, a few bangs and some titillation - that should have been my title.

Let me save you 2hrs

This movie is a total 'switch your brain off' vibe, but it's a mixed bag. The first 10 minutes hit you with a chaotic blast of action and plot twists that are more confusing than gripping, made worse by atrocious audio that makes it seem like the characters are lip-syncing. After that adrenaline-fueled opener, the film slams on the brakes, dragging through a dull stretch with little to keep you hooked until the action finally picks up again. It feels like Shane Black had a Gen Z assistant director whispering 'what's trendy' in his ear, because the movie tries way too hard to appeal to a young adult crowd with forced, out-of-touch 'hip' vibes.

Watchable

If you're a fan of Mark Wahlberg (and I am), then this is a completely watchable movie that provides a couple of hours of entertainment. But it's no better than a 6. There are some clever plot twists and a good "buddy" feel of him working with his gang.

But there are two oddities that bugged me a fair amount. First was a serious "this must have been done with AI" feel to many of the big actions scenes. Car crashes, train derailments, you have it, they felt "created;" they didn't look "real". Second was the against type casting of Wahlberg, Keegan Michael Key, Tony Shaloub as not-so-likeable criminals undermined the movie for me. Shaloub just doesn't seem like a mob boss, especially not one with an Italian-sounding name.

Bottom line: if you are looking for a little entertainment, and happy with the "Ah! That's why they did that!" moments in the movie, you'll enjoy it enough to spend the time.

Patchy Thriller: Stylish Heist That Loses Steam Before Picking Up Again

I gave Play Dirty a 6.5/10 because it's a mixed bag: some strong parts, some frustrating filler, but enough payoff to make it worthwhile.

The opening scenes are excellent... within the first 20 minutes the tension is sharp, the betrayal setup works, and you feel drawn into the ambition of the heist. But then the middle section sags.

For about an hour, the plot meanders: too many character motivations that never quite click, too many twists that add complexity without clarity. Some scenes feel there just to fill time, and occasionally the visuals and setting drop you out of immersion (fake-NY shots, shaky CGI?).

The final 25 minutes lift the film though. Stakes become clear, action sharpens up, and it redeems a lot of earlier dragging. Rosa Salazar in particular shines... when she appears she brings weight and energy. Wahlberg's Parker is competent, but less cunning or charismatic than I expected from earlier Parker adaptations.

Overall, Play Dirty is entertaining if you're willing to put up with uneven pacing. If you like big-scale heists, betrayals, and a strong finish, it delivers enough. If you need consistency or tight plotting throughout, it might frustrate.

Just bad

Being a longtime fan of the Parker series, I was looking forward to a good film. But it's disappointing. Parker is a very well-defined character. He's big, he's mean, he's quiet, he's dark. And most of all, he's not funny. He's not the wisecracking guy Wahlberg always plays. Now I like Wahlberg, but Mark Wahlberg always plays Mark Wahlberg. For a role like Parker you want a character actor, someone who can put aside his own identity and become Parker. Also someone who has the physicality to play Parker: tall, rangy, craggy features, muscular, strong, silent. Holt McCallany in 'Blackhat' comes to mind. Clint Walker in his prime would have been perfect, but they don't make Hollywood actors like that anymore. If you can't get someone like that, don't make a Parker movie.

Grofield and Lozini are similarly miscast. The characters in a Parker novel are larger than life, and that quality is just missing here.

The acting is just bad all around, the female lead's acting especially so. She sounds and acts like a random average person. Everyone's phoning it in. It was so bad that I could only watch less than a third of the movie. And for a Parker movie, that's saying something.

Twisty Heist Hijinks with Ocean's Eleven Energy

Play Dirty (2025) is a total rush-Shane Black's back with this heist flick where Mark Wahlberg leads a crew on the score of a lifetime, but bam, they get robbed mid-job, and then there's another double-crosser waiting. It's like Ocean's Eleven on steroids: non-stop twists, action-packed chases, and snappy banter that had me glued the whole time. Wahlberg's the grizzled thief, LaKeith Stanfield's the slick hacker stealing scenes, and Rosa Salazar brings the heat as the demo expert. Story flows without a boring second-plans go wrong left and right, keeping you guessing. Only nitpick: by the third big twist, it gets a tad over-the-top. Ratings are meh (6/10 IMDb, but I dug the energy-7/10 easy. Perfect for a quick, entertaining binge; I'd rewatch on a lazy night.

"You walk where the ice is thick, right? How thin do you want it?"

Based on the "Parker" book series by Richard Stark, where the titular character is a Thief with a plan, and he's good at his job.. even under pressure! Stealing from a mob-group that runs New York and settling a score.

A pretty good Shane Black script that delivers fun and nonsense right off the bat. Maintains a rushed-pace throughout, keeping the interesting developments exciting. And while it isn't an outright comedy, the dialogue is humorous when it needs to. The acting is serviceable (some worse than others) and definitely its weakest element, while the characters are colorful and forgettable enough.

Would recommend for fans of the genre and Mark. Beautiful intro credits.

Marky Mark and the FLUNKY bunch...

Another day, another awful movie from online retailer pseudo 'studio' Amazon (still masquerading as a legit Hollywood Movie Studio by buying MGM)

One dimensional Mark Wahlberg stars in yet another stinker from a guy who actually made some decent movies once upon a time ('Patriots Day' nine years ago being the last).

Wahlberg once again goes through the motions shooting, fighting and quipping his way through the tedious cartoonish script, which quickly descends into farce and chaos amidst some nonsense about a heist. Meanwhile not one member of the supporting cast is either believable or enjoyable while the dialogue is cringey. I won't bore you with what happens at the end bacuse in truth I actually switched off after an hour - it's that bad!

Honestly, I think the movie biz as we knew it pre-Covid is dead and buried. For every decent movie these days there are countless duds, even with decent stars and directors. I personally believe that the likes of Netflix, Apple and Amazon are a big part of the problem. It's heartbreaking to see.

Indeed, television is producing better viewing these days, which is undoubtedly why so many big stars are switching over to the small screen... but don't tell Wahlberg. Let him stay on the 'big-screen' with the rest of the over-hyped Hollywood trash machine. Sad times.

Fun & Freshing Heist Movie

This could have been a more typical heist movie, but all the elements came together and made it refreshingly fun and entertaining. A great script, great casting and awesome direction, along with hilarious unpredictability. Enjoyable and entertaining, a project that did "fiction" proud. Also, funny enough for regular rotation.

Kill, Quip, Repeat

First word that hit me after watching? Chaotic.

So yeah, "Play Dirty" is technically a remake-based on Donald E. It's more like a mashup of "Ocean's Eleven" and "The Nice Guys" with a sprinkle of "Die Hard" Christmas chaos.

Mark Wahlberg as Parker? Meh. He's got the swagger but not the magnetism. The action's loud, the jokes land half the time, and the plot's a tangled mess of double-crosses and random explosions.

Still, I kinda enjoyed the absurdity. A bank heist that spills into a horse race? CGI jockeys flying like darts? It's ridiculous, but in a "did that just happen?" way.

Is it worth watching? Depends. If you're into snarky, violent throwbacks with zero emotional stakes, go for it. Otherwise, it's just another disposable streamer flick.

I wouldn't call it good, but I wasn't bored either.

So boring I was doing something else while it kept playing , during the whole 2 hours !! I usually like mark's movies ,, this is one of the worst ones. Hard to follow the story and the shooting at the beginning is so stupid.

Food-processed script

Donald Westlake's "Parker" book-series consists of 28 crime thriller novels, and it seems Shane Black can't decide which one to adapt. Many scenes, including an early double-cross sequence, are inspired by 'The Sour Lemon Score,' #12 in the series. Other scenes are pulled from various novels, and fans of Donald Westlake/Richard Stark could almost make a drinking game of guessing which scenes and dialogue are pulled from other novels.

Take the main premise of 'Sour Lemon Score,' throw in a character from 'Butcher's Moon,' add a scene of 'The Mourner,' etc. The screenplay borrows material from so many stories, it can't be considered an adaptation, but it isn't original, either.

Westlake's novels (written as Richard Stark) are low-key thrillers, with occasional bursts of violence and sublime humor. Think along the lines of a 1950s thriller with a modest budget. Black's film is over-budgeted with his signature 'Lethal Weapon' action scenes and comedic buffoonery.

I watched the film in six-different intervals - it couldn't hold my attention for very long - and finally gave up. The movie careened to its interminable conclusion in the background while I tended to a few household tasks.

With his background, Shane Black should have made the best 'Parker'. Besides, Westlake had it all mapped out in 28 novels. Pick ONE.

Take it easy...it's farfetched

I know that at most of these types of movies, I will be the one to get grumpy. But...it's Mark Wahlberg. He gets free pass whenever he wants, at least for me. There isn't much to say about this movie. It's farfetched, on a massive and very self-aware way, but it doesn't prevent it from being good and fun.

I've searched for the word "Comedy" when looking at genres. Nope...it wasn't there, but it is a crime comedy, with action and drama in it. Whenever Mr. Wahlberg is on the set, it cannot be otherwise. He brings the fire and excels on what he does best - fast and smooth action comedies.

Most of the reviews I've seen didn't like it, but they all left a room for Mark Wahlberg lovers, because he is like a sub-genre in several genres types. He gets free passes from a lot of movie lovers and not just because his acting skills or good looks. This guy has the charm to survive for years at the top without doing anything rememberable.

We've all seen him nominated rightfully for his role at 'The Departed' and for his part at 'The Fighter', which should have got him nominated, but not. Still...he was awesome. Since and for the last several years he doesn't challenge himself with difficult roles but looks for easy money and this movie is exactly from those types of films.

No special talent is needed for his role, but he delivers and his chemistry with LaKeith Stanfield and Rosa Salazar (which I was certain, for several parts of the movie that is Aubrey plaza) is fantastic. Except all of those praises, it is a pretty simple heist movie with people who betray others to get the grand prize.

Sometimes it feels of the hook and very complicated and sometimes you remember that someone is trying to grab the money from someone else and this is all you need to know. The plot is simple and the characters are pretty flat, so the expectation from the audience is to shut the brain and give into Shane Black's simple script and grandiose directing scenes.

Nothing new to report on, except the fact that though this movie got hit from so many critics and audience types we are talking about a solid crime-action-comedy film. The fact that the expectation are low, even though the cast is pretty impressive just helped me enjoy the movie much more then I expected I would enjoy it.
