Personally, I've come to realize that I'm growing tired of the same type of Indonesian horror films-perhaps ever since Pengabdi Setan (2017) and Sebelum Iblis Menjemput (2018) were released, the genre has become increasingly repetitive. This similarity is apparent not only in the concept of the posters but also in the recurring themes and elements that appear on screen.
I find myself asking one question: how many Indonesian horror films released since 2018 have a title font that isn't blood-red with a dark background? And how many films manage to make the audience feel genuinely paranoid after leaving the theater, much like the unsettling moments with the mother and the bell, or when she suddenly appears behind a window or in her prayer attire?
Of course, a horror film isn't complete without jump scares, and Pemukiman Setan does have its share. These moments are particularly effective thanks to the thunderous score, which amplifies the tension and gives the audience a real jolt. While the film doesn't overdo the jump scares, focusing more on the action, the few that are present work quite well.
The film also brings horror to life through impressive gore-filled makeup effects. One example is the "ghost" from Alin's past, whose disfigured face with a dangling eye is enough to make anyone squirm. The technical aspects of the film play a significant role in creating its eerie atmosphere, helping to elevate the overall sense of dread.
