Hashtag Tadev Lagnam (2024) : Movie Review -

Marriage at about 40-possible? Yes, it is. I have seen many people mingling at 35-40, and I personally can relate since I am going to enter that phase soon. This film, however, is far from this basic issue. Forget Hollywood and Bollywood; even Marathi cinema has made numerous movies about it and that "one-day meeting" as well. This makes Hashtag Tadev Lagnam clichéd. The entire first half follows the same old plot with some over-the-top moments, but thankfully the second half contains delightful emotional moments that tug at your heart.

The film is about Athashree (Subodh Bhave), a man nearing 40 and still unmarried. The opening song details all the rejections he has faced, each with some silly reasons. The lyrics play a nice trick with double-meaning words: "Ghanta... nakar Ghantaa..." Well, Athashree goes to meet another girl (the 36th girl), Gayatri (Tejashri Pradhan), who is skeptical about marriage. In the first 15 minutes of their conversation, she clearly says "no" to marriage, and then they begin a friendly discussion. A few things, or rather accidents, happen quickly, and they get to know each other very well. But is that enough for marriage?

The first half of the film is clearly focused on introducing these two characters. Those identical clichés are evident, and the film quickly becomes predictable. You are literally not interested in the movie when the interval point arrives. However, the film takes a new direction in the second half and presents some brilliant emotional moments that make you teary-eyed. It's very sweet in parts and over-the-top on a few occasions. Let's say that coffee table scene where Athashree turns into Atthu was too childish, or his visit to Gayatri's house and how her parents treat him with over-enthusiasm. It all looks so fake and abruptly staged. Thankfully, those background stories of both characters in the second half give new meaning and perspective to their lives, making you start to love them as individuals while your eyes witness it all with tears gathering to celebrate the moment.

Subodh Bhave's performance is honest, if not impeccable. The character required him to appear a bit dull and boring since he was nearing his 40s, and he executed this as if it came naturally. The character grows on you later, and there are no intricate theories involved. His simplicity wins you over. Tejashri plays a tough nut: a girl who is straightforward about rejecting someone but sweet on the inside. I loved the way she spoke like a typical 25-year-old girl while explaining simple things we all relate to, especially the laughter. "I like teasing someone who is in an awkward position and making him more awkward," she says, and I tell you a lot of girls at 25 do that. It becomes metaphorical here since she's not 25, but close to 40. We can see that maturity in her eyes and facial expressions. I believe casting these two together was a very mature decision. Archana Nipanikar plays a simple girl, far from that glamorous image of Instagram reels, Pradeep Velankar is a typical nice father, and Mansi Magikar is a formulaic mother. Sharmistha Raut and Sanjay Khapre appear in annoying cameos, but they're not that bad.

Hashtag Tadev Lagnam isn't a high-budget film, and that's okay. I don't want such simple stories to be made on larger scales, but the surroundings could have been better. One character mentions the Powai area in the film, but it has a distinct Puneri feel. The music doesn't provide any hit numbers, but I liked the situational feel of "Jeeva Paad" and the background score during the emotional moments. The cinematography was fine, the sound design was okay, and the production value is on par. Anand Gokhale's direction seemed a bit confused and misplaced at the beginning, but he got back on track in the second half. However, that first half still does enough damage to diminish the overall impact. I'd say this one is watchable only for its second half and nothing else. If that suits you, then do watch it.

Movie Review: Marathi film - Hashtag Tadev Lagnam screening in cinema halls near you!!

Athashri Mahajan (Subodh Bhave) is a Marathi professor who is unmarried despite being in his 40's. Gayatri (Tejashree Pandit) is an independent woman who is also almost 40 but still single.

Although Athashri is now ready for marriage , having seen and being rejected by 35 women , he still is an eternal optimist.

Gayatri, on the other hand is against marriage, but still decides to meet Athashri for the sake of her parents. Impressed by Athashri's reasons for not marrying so far, Gayatri decides to be friends with him & as she spends more time with him, Gayatri finds herself getting drawn towards him. Will this unusual love story have a happy ending!!

This film is what u can call " Chicken Soup for the Marathi Soul" 😊. The story isn't new and similar to the Swapnil Joshi, Mukta barve film Mumbai -Pune-Mumbai.

Subodh Bhave & Tejashree Pradhan as the protagonists have done a great job. The film has its moments .. some emotional ones that will genuinely touch ur heart & a few funny moments that will definitely bring a smile on ur face.

The BGM is nice and 2 songs " Saglyancha foto ala pahije" & Nakarghanta" have been decently picturised.

As far as the story goes , it is something that we have seen quite a few times in the past.

Overall a decent one-time watch!! Not bad at all!!
