I was at least 30 minutes into Frankie Freako before I realized I was watching a new film by the writer and director of both Psycho Goreman AND Heart of Karl. I don't know how I could be so irresponsible--I should have had the release date on my calendar months ago!

So this story didn't quite grab me the way some of his past work did. There wasn't really a character that kept me cracking up all the way through on the level of a Mimi, or a PG. My favorite moments were probably with the supervisor played by Adam Brooks--he always seems to find a way to inject wacky, unexpected humor into his scenes. There were plenty of all-star cameos, but I didn't pick up on them until looking over the credits. I was also kind of surprised that the title character didn't really end up doing too many wild, outrageous things. But my sense is that fans of Kostanski's unique world-building will have fun with this one.

Ever since Steven Kostanski released The Void, which I absolutely adored, he has definitely been on my radar. Since then, I have watched other movies of his like Manborg, Leprechaun: Returns, and Psycho Goreman, all of which were unique and great in their own way. It's no different with Frankie Freako. It's absurd, funny, and totally bonkers. The movie tells the story of Conor, a workaholic who finds himself alone at home when his wife is away for the weekend. He stumbles upon an ad for a party hotline hosted by a strange dancing goblin named Frankie Freako, and soon after, the carnage begins.

The movie is strange, and it honestly took me a while to get into the right mindset to understand its humor and general premise. I wasn't fully convinced at first, but as the movie progresses, it becomes more absurd and fun. Once you settle into the story and its crazy characters, the movie becomes quite entertaining and enjoyable to watch. Similar to movies like Manborg or Psycho Goreman, the comedy doesn't always hit the mark. It's obviously absurd and childish, with some smart jokes mixed in, but I understand it's not for everyone, and at times, it didn't quite connect with me either. However, I still prefer these absurd and fun movies over another stereotypical haunted house movie from Blumhouse. Also, the practical effects in this movie were once again awesome, but I didn't expect anything less from Kostanski and his team. Especially the third act has a nice surprise that could come straight out of an 80s creature feature. If you've enjoyed Kostanski's previous work, you'll likely have a great time with Frankie Freako and his buddies, but I can understand that the absurd humor and narrative might turn some people off. [5.7/10]

Listen I get that it is supposed to be shlocky fun but ugh it really never lets up reminding you of the "so bad it's good!," angle. It sort of felt like a movie made to test the limits of what masochist fans of purposefully obtuse alternative comedy would be willing to accept. Like if Tim and Eric wrote and directed Chucky. Frankie Freako is just as annoying or awesome as you would imagine that would be depending on your taste. Fans of pure brainrot schlock humor might get a kick out of "shabadoo," spamming but if you still have a pulse you might want to avoid seeing this thing as it will undoubtedly provide you with a long and uncomfortably painful watch experience. If it was a short or part of anthology I probably could have got behind it more but whew it makes for a hard feature length watch imo.

Unfortunately, I have to admit that this isn't Steven Kostanski's Best work. I enjoyed his last Films like "Fathers Day", Psycho Goreman, the short film "Bio-Cop", and the Horrorfilm "The Void", which had a somewhat serious undertone, more. But I have to say that I was well Entertained by this Film. You can see that Steven Kostanski put a lot of love into his crazy Puppet shows. The gags don't always work, but it's wonderfully pointless, and the Film itself doesn't take itself too seriously. I realize that not everyone will like the Film, but if you know and love Steven Kostanski's special sense of Humor and style, then you can definitely give the Film a chance.

If you're looking for pointless, trashy fun, grab some popcorn, turn off your Brain and let the Party start!

*Gremlins* meets *Evil Dead* meets *Chucky*-but none of it works. It's hard to take this movie seriously, and I'm not talking about the overall tone, as it's clear the aim was to embrace absurdity. However, the execution fails miserably, and as a whole, it doesn't serve its purpose as a movie. Every scene feels more like a sketch designed for children than a cohesive narrative. There are a few chuckles here and there, but nothing genuinely funny. The overwhelming sense of cheapness pervades the entire film, making it hard to view this as a legitimate cinematic effort. I'll give it 2 stars for the nostalgic nod to similar flicks from the '80s, but that's about it.

Summary: the Savage Steve Holland-style joke illustrations that accompany the end credits are the best thing about this heavily templated '80s homage. They're a lot of fun. The rest doesn't really get there. It's like a Canva version of Ghoulies Go To College.

I love this creative team's previous work. The Void, Chowboys, Psycho Gorman, yes yes yes. I enjoy the films they're homaging here, from Gremlins to Child's Play to Puppet Master to the barrel-bottom-scraping likes of Hobgoblins and Garbage Pail Kids. I love trash movies in general. I genuinely loved Thankskilling 3. I only sort of regret sitting through Ouija Shark.

So I see the vision here, but it doesn't work. To pull off a pastiche of '80s puppet comedy-horror in 2024, Frankie Freako needs to surprise and build on itself at every turn like Psycho Goreman. But it lacks both the strong central gag of PG (that the little girl was more of a psycho than the title character) and the out-of-nowhere absurdity that popped up in PG's every scene.

This sticks to the '80s kid-friendly lite-horror template so slavishly that there's no room for surprises. Will the uptight yuppie learn to loosen up after a relentless assault of puppet violence and grossouts? I wonder! Will it be zany fun? Not really. The best comic creation here is Conor's incredibly awkward and shady boss, and the film makes the mistake of sidelining him so the other characters can briefly visit another, even cheaper-looking set. Not a good trade-off.

I honestly feel that Thankskilling 3 succeeded much more at doing what this flick tried to do, and believe me, that's not a sentence I ever thought I'd say. If you do watch Frankie Freako, stick around for the comic illustrations that run alongside the end credits. Those were fun and surprising. Wish I'd gotten that from the rest of the movie.

You need to go into this movie appreciating puppet horror. Defiantly a niche type of horror sub-genre, but it does have its audience. For myself, growing up on Chucky, Slappy, Puppet Master, Ghoulies, and Garbage Pail Kids: The Movie. "Frankie Freako" was a pleasant surprise. There is defiantly segments that would have scared me in my youth. Especially Munch's awesome design. I was actually reminiscing of the times I first watched puppet horror while enjoying "Frankie Freako". I got that love letter to this niche from my viewing. The second viewing will be making someone else watch it without the "itch" for the "niche". See what they have to say about the film. "The Void" Is the perfect film and what got me (personally) into H. P. Lovecraft (thank you). I think this film would be better appreciated if you are ALSO a fan of the work Steven, Adam, Conor, and Matthew. A lot of people I am probably not thinking of, but that crew. Everything they create is unique, tongue in cheek, and well, gory-grotesque-lovely-madness. Thank you. I look forward to everything you guys create. 8/10. The ending of "Frankie Freako" is "wonderful". Heckin' the best. SKIP THE TRAILER. Go into this one just like a low budget haunted house with all the thrills and cheeze.

This was so bad. I've seen my fair share of bad movies. But this honestly is whack. I'm convinced any thing above a 1 is freako propaganda. Seriously best part of the movie is probably the intro to see hanger 81. After that you could turn the movie off.

I should have seen that intro and instantly turned this off. The movie is labeled as a comedy fantasy but lacks on the comedy side. But if you are able to sit through the whole movie. You are a true freako. Idk if that's a good thing. But honestly check it out. Even if you don't finish the movie at least you can say you watched the worst movie ever created.

Steven Kostanski is one of the biggest horror prodigies of the 21st Century thus far. All the films he directed, either solo or together with his Astron-6 pals, are greatly entertaining. The list is already quite impressive. "Father's Day", "Manborg", and "The Void" are my absolute favorites, but also "The Editor", "Psycho Goreman", and his belated sequel "Leprechaun Returns" are very adequate and ingenious horror flicks.

Because of all these aforementioned titles, I went blindly into "Frankie Freako" and fully trusted it was going to be another dementedly fun and gooey trash/horror comedy. What a massive disappointment! It is demented and trashy, alright, but sadly in the most infantile and unfunny way imaginable. The film is a sort of crossbreed between "Critters" and the "Puppet Master" series, but with the dumb humor of failed monster-comedies of that same era; - like "Munchies" and "Hobgoblins". I can't imagine there's any target audience for a dud like this. The story revolves around Conor who's the most boring and predictably structured guy in the world. To prove to himself and to his wife that he can be wild as well, he calls a party-hotline and end up with a trio of psychotic goblins in his apartment. I don't even want to bother summarizing the rest of the nonsense. If you're a fan of the previous work of Kostanski and his pals, skip it. If you're a fan of campy B-horror and 80s homages, skip it. In fact, just skip it altogether.

It's a throw back to the 80s horror comedy in that someone might have seen it as a kid and still think it's hilarious, but in reality it sucks by every measure. I gave a slight giggle in the first few minutes when I thought it had potential. Now I want to burn the thing with acid and flames.

The sad thing is someone probably really thought they were doing something with this. It's just a boring mess. I'm struggling to find anything positive to say. I'm usually not one to completely pan a film, but if this review stops even a single person from tuning in, then I'll have no regrets.

You've been warned.

Just got back from the toronto screening of frankie freako. Steve Konstanski, and fellow Astron 6 members Connor Sweeney, Mathew Kennedy (FF), and Adam Brooks are a canadian gem. This movie was a blast. Despite its low budget, You can tell this (pretty much all Kostanski projects) have a key ingriedient to it's fun madness. And that my good friend is heart. This film just like PsychoGoreman, Manborg, the editor, fathers day all have heart. Story is very simple, acting is very good from Connor showing his versatility despite only working with puppets throughout the movie. The SFX/VFX blended so well together creating a world thats beyond what you expect from watching the trailer. This deseves all the praise it gets. I would love to see more movies from this type of universe. If you get a chance, please go and see this movie.

I honestly wasn't expecting much, but this movie reminds me of some of the crazy little monster movies thar I watched back in the 80's as a kid. It's a relatively clean movie too, so I think it would be fun for the whole family. Yeah, the humor is pure cheese and it's got puppets, but that's what makes it kinda cool. Instead of relying completely on CGI like most new movies, they use a lot of practical effects. And the music is spot-on, helping with the party vibe. I loved some of the marketing that they did for this movie with the number you could call or text and get a message from Frankie himself. I hope to see more movies like this from writer-director Steven Kostanski. Awesome job, dude! Makes me want to party and get my freak on!

People throw around the expressive praise "the most fun you'll have at the movies this year" quite a lot and it can be hyperbolic screaming off the front of movie advertisements but in the case of Steven Kostanski's Frankie Freako it just might be true. This is a Midnite Movie blast of endearing satirical schlock, a genuinely sweet creature feature in the tradition of stuff like Gremlins and Critters and while it's specific brand of oddball deadpan humour won't be for everyone, I was utterly transported. A relatively buttoned down family man/office worker (Conor Sweeney) has a tame, safe existence to the point that his own wife (Kristy Wordsworth) calls him a 'square.' One day a troupe of howlin' mad little creatures from a maniacal TV ad invade the sanctity of his conservative 1980's yuppie domain and throw an extended, very chaotic house party that more than threatens his benign daily routine. What's a guy to do? Get swept up in an adventure that plays like Troma meets Amblin and surrender to the good times, that's what. Filmmaker Kostanski also previously helmed The Void (2016) and Psycho Goreman (2020) which are already in my personal all time favourite collection. He pulls off a hat trick here with a film so raucously charming and mischievously effervescent it could wipe anyone's bad mood slate clean. Frankie and his adorable band of tiny little goons are all brought to life using lovingly kitschy practical puppet effects that are assured enough to be believable and deliberately creaky enough to pay homage to the films that clearly inspired them. Kostanski has a deep love for everything 80's horror from Lovecraftian cosmic angst to madcap creature feature irreverence and tips his hat while finding his own distinct groove in the genre. Quite literally the most fun you may have at the movies this year.

It's what you are thinking, it's campy, fun and absolutely ridiculous. Its"horror" maybe but in the same as the old 80's movies like munchies, it really knows what it is. It absolutely hits the mark. Old 1-900 numbers and back in the day how much trouble you can get into when that phone bill comes in. Now I have to fill this space, well. I have been drinking, doing drugs. I have been waiting for Halloween and this is a great movie for that. Besides, this is the same director that did the void(absolutely amazing) and Psycho Goreman (which is one of the most amazing comedy horrors of all time. Absolutely amazing.

I've got the freako. If you're reading this, you can have the freako too. Don't be a bland square; put some spice into your life.

But in all seriousness, if you are a fan of Kostanski and/or RLM, you will probably be the kind of person who will appreciate this style of humor.

There's great ongoing gags, purposefully terrible puppetry, and as always with Kostanski, some pretty nauseating scenes of various viscous fluids being dumped on someone.

If you don't take yourself too seriously, give it a chance. What the heck else are you going to do in your life, rewatch The Office? Stock up on paper for your Piece of Paper Pizza Pantry? Dial 900-555-freako and get some freak in ya.
