Could be a lot better

I'm halfway through the second episode, so grain of salt. I'll change my review after watching a few more episodes, but I suspect it won't find its feet enough to improve much. I haven't read Rice (not this series, anyway) so I'm coming in without having read -- or watched -- anything but the original Pitt/Cruise Interview. First, the writing is just not very good. The premise isn't very original (maybe it was when Rice wrote it?) but that's okay as it's still pretty rich and this show holds so much promise. So why isn't the writing better? They say painfully obvious things, hold back information annoyingly but unnecessarily, and it's bad enough that the actors are struggling with it. Denton is chewing up the scenery and responding to situations so inconsistently and inappropriately that his acting alone was almost enough to get me to stop watching. It may not be his fault, IDK. And please, do something with his hair, he's not 12 (or James Blunt) and it's 2025.

If the writing shores itself up and Denton gets better direction, maybe it'll attain its promise. Crossing my fingers, but not betting on it.

Watched the 3rd episode. Too much angst, too much explication, not enough movement. The tension is forced and it gets pretty boring.

Watched 2nd episode

It is exactly what you would expect. I like that the characters are all solid the actors are delivering solid performances and they did not go for some sort so celebrity stunt casting. Relying more on the script.

It is basically a slow, mystery type with minimal fantasy elements at least the first and second episodes.

But I really don't think weekly releases does this any favours. Each individual episode has so little content, interest or excitement, you get to the end and wonder why you even watched it. I expect this would be better if you could binge the whole thing.

I found the directing and photography very drab and boring, with little colour or interest, action scenes are show after the action part. So just the result. And it just feels like random scene/event after random scene/event the logic tying each scene to the next does not exist. No idea what world these writers exist in.

So far after 2 episodes I don't care about any of the characters or the reason of the plot or what happens which is not much.

The rating right now it is a boring 5 which would be don't bother. I gave it a 6 because only seen the first 2 episodes. But if it does not pick in the 3rd episode I think this series is going to bomb, people are not going to bother watching it.

Basically it is like an amazing looking burger, but tastes like cardboard. If they dont start adding some flavour this show is toast.

This should have remained a secret

"Talamasca: The Secret Order" has so far shown little to none of the distinct atmosphere and narrative techniques that have earned Anne Rice her well deserved success. What we've mostly gotten so far is a lot of rambling, incoherent and disjointed "explanations" of what Talamasca is and does. Apparently the world is on the verge of being taken over by evil bloodsuckers and their sycophants, but you'd never know it by the pace of the action of the Talamaska crew. We get what feels like hours of characters trudging through the seediest streets of Manchester, England as they haphazardly look for "clues", and the result is a boring mess. Vampire sightings, especially those with Ms. Rice's flair for stylish and exotic/erotic dastardly deeds, are few and far between. No. This production of "Talamasca: The Secret Order" definitely should have remained a secret.

It's a pretty good series

The series itself is a great concept. Well acted. Well done. William Fichtner is great. As usual. The thing that bothers me is the 'decoding the episode' shorts they do after the episodes. It's seriously an insult to the viewer's intelligence. You do not need to explain what happened in the episode. Let the viewer work it out. Don't spoon feed them. It's honestly quite insulting.

Slow burn but high hopes

So whilst I understand that the first two episodes are a slow burn, I have high hopes and I'm fully invested. I think it's too easy for people to write off a show after a couple of episodes. We live within a culture of instant gratification but sometimes we have to invest in something for longer than 5 minutes. I've read comments stating that the reviewers don't care about the characters but after two episodes why would you? I enjoyed both episodes.

One word: Burton

I only saw episode 1, my overall impression is that most of the cast members fit the characters of the series. From the mysterious and manipulative Helen played by Elizabeth McGovern, the eeriely dangerous Jasper by William Fichtner, and the new recruit Guy played by Nicholas Denton. However, the title of show stealer should go to Jason Schwartzman as Vampire Burton. OMG, the scenes that he was in.

Talk, talk, talk, nothing ever happens.

AMC shows do seem to have this problem, where almost nothing happens and we just keep talking in riddles.

So we open the show with a young man interviewing for a big law job. Apparently he can hear thoughts and this is "important". Eventually he is followed by a woman, an absolutely ridiculous sounding Elizabeth McGovern, who wants him for her weird paranormal CIA. But why... to me.. seems the question. All he can do is slightly hear thoughts... not even all that completely.

After three episodes in, things happened, but not in service of any plot. I still didn't really understand what was happening or the stakes. I didn't understand why the main character "Guy" was so important.

The main character was charmless and uninteresting... scoffing at every word out of anyone's mouth... you have to like the main character and I didn't.

Pretentious

They tried to mask it up as something special by adding a great actor - a couple of interesting characters. Pretty people and sometimes sexy storylines - in the end it's just boring -I'd love to be wrong - turn it around and make it good. MAKE IT GOOD ... NOT EVEN GREAT - I will continue to watch because everything else is bad, but that's not what you want this CALIBER show to be -I mean the story by ep 1 was predictable, by ep 3 was boring and by 4 made me write this review. Girl, you had me by the premise, you lost me by ... I'll find out.

Not what was wanted.

The Talamasca has centuries of history that could have been explored from it's origin story to present day,as a fan of Rice's stories the Talamasca has always been a mysterious organization I wished she would have given more stories about, when I heard about the series I had hoped that it was going to be the Talamasca's story but instead they chose to make it just some generic type of supernatural series with the name Talamasca to rope in fans of the books. It's a shame because there was so much material that was there to be mined,I'm not sure the fans will stick with this series,Iwill watch for a few more eps but I'not holding out hope that it will me what I need.

Want to like it

Was really hoping for something intriguing and enjoyable but the main character, who's supposed to be bright, isn't. Kept thinking about the writers conference where someone threw out the idea that they should make a series with Napoleon Dynamite and vampires. Will give it one more episode before giving up completely.

Should be called Salamander

It moves sooooo slow, like a half frozen salamander carrying a 3lb rock on its tiny fragile legs.

The casting seems a bit off too. I don't care for the lead at all. He's more annoying and unconvincing as a scholar. He is abrassive and sarcastic yet at the same time tryies to convey wonder and skepticism but it just doesn't wash. He is flat and easily forgettable.

However, Elizabeth McGovern is wonderful as usual as a leader and scholar with a touch of humanity. But it all stops there.

We are supposed to care about what this group is doing, but I don't. There just isn't any "meat" to the story or why the Salamander views everything as a threat. What are the Supernaturals plans? What are the Salamanders plans? Does anyone even have a plan or reason for being on my screen? It doesn't feel like it.

It just feels empty and a big giant "Whatever". Skip it.

Very Boring

I've always enjoyed movies and series about the Supernatural. When I heard about this series, I was very excited. Watching this series was very slow, boring, and I found myself checking and reading my emails on my MacBook Air M4. The producers should have started the show out with supernatural scenes and storylines to get the attention of the viewers. After watching the second boring episode, I have lost interest in this series.

It's better than the others

It would have been more compelling to have the original characters from the novels in this series. I've read she sold 100 million books so there are fans that complain about essential people being completely left out of the story. To me that was a mistake as most people who are interested in the series read the books. I read them because of the way Anne wrote history and how she intertwined world events throughout the series. I will keep watching though, it's not bad.

It looks like AMC has finally--and irreversibly--over-saturated the Rice market.

I watched the entire first season of "Mayfair Witches" with mild curiosity. It wasn't bad! But, neither was it good enough to make me tune in for Season 2. As for Season One of "Interview With A Vampire"? I became permanently disinterested in watching the rest of the series by the end of Episode 1.3!

With regard to the series premiere of "Talamasca," however? Well let's put it this way. My definition of "riveting TV show" is one where I don't switch channels even during the commercials. With this one, though, I was shutting off the TV, and going to bed, by the start of the very first commercial!

In short? Sorry-yet-not sorry, AMC. You've rendered me permanently disinterested in watching the rest of this series by dishing out one offering of Anne Rice too many.

Bad acting & boring

Just finished ep 2 and not hopeful for the rest of the series. Barely anything of interest happened. Over explaining on points. Terrible dialogue and just... really boring. When does it get good?

The main character is completely charmless, so are all the characters. How did this plot get finance to be made? I'm bummed. Wanted to love it.

Not Interview with the Vampire

Based on Ep 1: Feels like the love child of late 90's\early 2000 and a YouTube fan short.

Lame dialog, weird shots, poor acting.

I came with high expectations and left extremely disappointed.

Do yourself a favor if you enjoyed Interview with the Vampire and skip this one to avoid tainting a great thing by studio's greed.

So many things to watch... but not that

Well, there is a first time for everything.

This was my first time witnessing how a reasonably entertain bunch of books could be turned into the most boring and shallow pile of images.

The actors are bland, the tension inexistent, all the characters you may have enjoyed in writing come as a let down in this TV adaptation.

The only part of the team that get a pass are the camera operators, they got me through three episodes, but i won't go any farther, this is an utter loss of viewing time.

Based on the first episodes, excellent!

Excellent so far, brilliant casting, so happy - finally someone's building a good story, creating a mood, clever writing and good performances. I'm excited to see if they'll maintain the quality, but based on what I've seen so far, it's very well done. And - what's with the negative reviews? Looks like very high quality to me, and is elevated above the usual pedestrian tedium and predictable scripts.

Good

The Good

Interesting peek into the workings of the organisation.

Vampires, witches and other supernatural occurrences.

Acting, directing, and the rest of the production are all great.

Interesting enough plot and subplots.

The Bad

As has been said, it *is* a bit of a slow burn...

Vampire abilities, magic, and psi abilities aren't popping off every few seconds...it's somewhat understated beyond the first episode. It *isn't* a magical show.

The story so far is quite tight - you do get a glimpse into Talamasca, vampires, witches...but the story isn't *about* them, they're just in it...if that makes sense.

The story could be easily transposed into any other setting...the things the characters do for most of the screen time are pretty mundane and typical of detective/mystery fare. I appreciate that the same can be said for a lot of things, but in this case, it seems even more so.

It's set around central London - it's accurate...therefore it's grey...nowhere near as sumptuous as either of the other series.

Conclusion

I'm attracted by the paranormal elements, but the itch isn't quite being satisfied.

I'm happy to watch it, my score may go up and is unlikely to go down...but...I'm not being blown away.

If it were cancelled after 4 episodes, then the truth is I would be pretty indifferent.

Quite on par

I'm not sure how many words i have to write for this to qualify, i merely wished to say and it's rare i write imdb reviews despite being an Amazon Vine product tester who writes many..

This is quite a genuine outing.. it holds a significance that many genres of this 'trope' lack.

It is well introduced and sustains all components.

Don't pass it by, watch the first episode and draw your own conclusion.

Unique

I have no particularly investment in Rice's writing, or universes. I don't really care all that much for the other shows so far either. But this, despite it's only competent acting, is a very unique premise - supernatural combined with spycraft, and it's reasonably well executed, you can tell some love went into it's creation. I wouldn't say it's top tier prestige tv but it's not really commodity either. There's production value here, some scripting effort.

If you like both genre's, supernatural and spycraft, I think there's good odds you'll enjoy this. It's not as abstract, slow burning, or politically adjacent as the other two shows. It's fairly much just good entertainment.

Not the same level as "Interview with the Vampire"

I've been taken in by the new portrayal of Lestat on television, so much so that I found myself diving into every bit of Anne Rice's world I could get my hands on, even wandering into "Mayfair Witches." The "Interview with the Vampire" seasons have held up beautifully, while "Mayfair Witches" never quite found the same footing, yet the idea of the Talamasca kept tugging at me, and I was ready for this new series the moment word of it surfaced. It opens with a kind of quiet intrigue that pulls you along, although the middle stretch slows to a crawl, making you sit in the shadows longer than necessary. Elizabeth McGovern brings confidence that's effortless and undeniable, and Nicholas Denton, playing the central male role, surprised me with a presence that sneaks up on you, his delivery carrying a rhythm that makes even the simplest line feel loaded. For a while the whole thing seems to lose its sense of direction, drifting toward a place where you start to wonder if it can still find its footing, but the final episode pulls back the curtain just enough to make you rethink the journey. Whether those late pivots are enough will depend on how much the idea of the Talamasca speaks to you, and how willing you are to hold on until the very end.

Good series.

I was looking for a new series to watch. Nicholas Denton is giving me major pretty boy role. He's a good actor. Elizabeth McGovern is amazing!! I ended up watching three episodes because of her. Her performance is brilliant. William Fichtner is also a great actor and is the series and does a great performance.

I would recommend watching from the beginning otherwise you would get confused if you don't keep up. Lots of interesting parts and characters.

Watched 5 episodes

I had quit after watching 2 episodes, but I decided to keep going. What a mistake. The writers should be fired. Nothing happens. The characters talk ad nauseam about themselves and their hurt feelings over and over. In episode 5, 2 characters even play a board game at a safe house and rehash their whiney pasts. Seriously!

The lead male character is boring and whiney. Elizabeth McGovern is wasted; most of her dialogue in 5 episodes is, I can't tell you--and nothing much happens anyway.

At several points, I was actually rooting for the revenants to kill everybody.

Don't waste your time. Go read a good Anne Rice book or wait for Interview 3 to come out.
