V/H/S: Halloween

Chaotic and wild with some flaws

If you're already a fan of the V/H/S franchise, chances are you'll find something to enjoy in V/H/S: Halloween. For me, it landed somewhere in the middle. One segment stood out as genuinely scary, original, immersive, and the kind of horror that lingers. Unfortunately, the rest leaned too heavily into gore for gore's sake, sacrificing storytelling for shock value.

That said, there's still plenty of chaotic fun to be had. The film balances flashes of strong direction with moments of pure absurdity, and even when it misses, it never stops being wild. The uneven quality of the segments makes it tricky to rate, but with only one standout and the rest feeling just okay, I'm settling on a 6/10.

Just watch V/H/S 2 again

This movie tries and the Adult Swim segment is hilarious, but the rest just seem forced. The connecting story is lame and doesn't really have any tie to the others stories or a reason for them. The neighborhood haunted house story is probably the most entertaining. As above, so below is the most erie and best directed segment.

Impressives ones >> disappointing ones. Good V/H/S entry overall. [+64%]

It was high time a V/H/S flick got made with the Halloween theme. Like with each instalment, it's ideal to analyse segment-by-segment:

"Diet Phantasma" (wraparound narrative) - Prologue Written and directed by Bryan M. Ferguson, this one's my least favourite in the film overall. It has that late '80s look and solid practical effects, but given that the same thing repeats itself between segments (consume soda or get close to it, go insane), it became incredibly less impactful by the end. (2/5)

"Coochie Coochie Coo" The story takes place around 2009 and features some interesting lore. Two high schoolers go trick-or-treating (for the final time, ugh) and end up getting stuck at a house with a mysterious occupant (or occupants?). The one's a load of fun -- creepy make-up effects, some unexpectedly disgusting finds, shaky cam 101, and a pretty satisfying finale. (3/5)

"Ut Supra Sic Infra" Paco Plaza (of REC, Veronica, and Sister Death) comes up with a crime reconstruction plot at a supposed psychic's mansion. The setup and payoffs here are predictable, and there's a surprising amount of eye-gouging here, which made me want to look away. But besides the action-packed finale, there isn't much to write home about for a filmmaker of Plaza's calibre. (2.5/5)

"Fun Size" What a blast! This is, hands down, my pick. Casper Kelly's segment is the perfect mix of laughs, gross-out gore, and tension-driven thrills. Glad this segment was positioned as the "centrepiece" because it had pretty much everything I wanted from a V/H/S segment. The effects are great, the payoffs are solid, and there's scope for a full-length film here, if characters can be well-developed. Give this guy a budget! (4/5)

"Kidprint" Alex Rose Perry writes and directs the darkest segment in the film, revolving around a serial (kidnapper and) killer with a video fetish. The segment holds nothing back when it comes to depicting violence and harm against kids and adolescents, with some really gruesome imagery coming your way. The plot is quite thin and unfolds quickly, but the gnarly effects do capture your attention. (3/5)

"Home Haunt" Micheline Pitt-Norman & R. H. Norman's segment feels eerily familiar to a short story I wrote almost a decade ago, with a family haunt gradually turning into a hellish portal. It also has a bit of the Hell House LLC hangover to it, but there are some surprises too, with a really captivating (and brutal) finale. A pretty solid segment, if not a great one. (3/5)

Overall, it's good to see the impressive segments outnumbering the disappointing ones in this edition of V/H/S. Let's keep the yearly tradition going -- it not only gives rise to new, creative voices in the horror genre, but also opens the doors for them to materialise their larger ideas in the near future.

Ignore the bad reviews! This one is FUN!

What a great film to kickoff the season! This film is loads of fun!

I went in expecting another mediocre VHS film but instead was awesomely surprised with something that played like an amateurs masterpiece. Dark yet playful and fun. You get your violence and dark themes with plenty of laughs. Is the acting masterclass? Lol, it doesn't need to be.

The story about the candy making, one per person... wow, hahaha.

If you're going into this one without expectation and just looking for new spooky season films to sprinkle in with the classics you're undoubtedly watching...throw this one on and give it a chance.

Cannot believe these high ratings!!

As of most of the reviewers, I have watched every installment of VHS, and this is by far the absolute worst in the series. Beyond the series, this movie is just horrible! Stories and acting are absolutely atrocious! I fell asleep 20 minutes in and had to restart when I woke up. It was a true effort to watch this entire movie. If you haven't yet... Don't bother. 👎🏼👎🏼

Jesus...

"For Internal Use Only" Honestly that would probably be better for the whole film instead of trying to release this garbage.

I could not even drag myself to watch past at least the first hour and a half without questioning myself "why did I put this on?"

I always like to watch films with an open mind and give it chance to try to bring me into the storyline but this... was painful. The acting was abysmal and it just felt they tried to squeeze everything all at once.

User reviews are trash

This guy saying these movies haven't been great since 2013 is a joke. Maybe they're just not for you, pal. The reality is that these movies have something for everyone, sometimes they're not to one's liking and sometimes they are.. it's an anthology and you need to rate it as such.

These movies are great in their own ways and it's become almost a yearly release that we look forward to. Very similar to how Sharknado and Saw were released, the become a tradition. These movies should never end.

FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY

I have been a fan of the V/H/S movies for a while now and this years entry V/H/S Halloween does not disappoint. The individual stores are scary, extremely gory, with one story being funny (You won't look at a packet of skittles the same way ever again.)

It's excellent that all of the stories on Halloween, which really adds to the creepiness of the movie. This is a really good movie to watch in the lead up to Halloween. The set designs, prosthetics and actors are really giving it their all. This movie is a solid 8/9 out of 10.

Happy Trick or Treating.

One of the better V/H/S/ Films

I'm not a huge fan of found footage horror but have always enjoyed most of the VHS entries. Loved the first two and the recent Beyond installment. This is probably my fourth favorite of the entire series and I primarily watched it as I'm a huge fan of REC and the director was involved with the second segment, "Ut Supra Sic Infra".

As for each segment:

Wraparound - Diet Phantasma - 5/10 Was ok but got a bit repetitive.

1st Segment - "Coochie Coochie Coo" - 4/10 Two older teens go into a haunted house on Halloween, encounter weird 'family' This one didn't work for me and seemed bland.

2nd Segment - "Ut Supra Sic Infra" - 6/10 Investigators take survivor to scene of a crime to re-enact how everyone died. Had high hopes for this coming from REC co-creator and wasn't too bad. Expected a bit more but you might enjoy more with lower expectations.

3rd Segment - "Fun Size" - 8/10 Two older couples go trick or treating and face the consequences of taking more than 1 candy. This was my favorite and was a horror comedy (but very gory). Seems like people will love it or hate it.

4th Segment - "Kidprint" - 5/10 Children are missing after visiting an electronics store. This segment was very gory and some people might not be able to stomach it. Not my type of horror but might be for others.

5th Segment - "Home Haunt" - 7/10 Family runs a haunted house on Halloween and gets more than they bargained for with mysterious record. Liked this episode even if it was predictable. Was also one of the gorier segments of this anthology.

Overall, this is one of the gorier entries in the VHS series and like others, has some segments that hit and others that miss. If you can get past the first underwhelming segment, you might find a few other segments you'll enjoy - especially Fun Size.

Viral is not the worst anymore

What a big letdown. After a year of waiting for a new V/H/S release, it's embarrassing what I just saw. Well, all V/H/S movies had AT LEAST one good segment. This one does NOT HAVE A SINGLE ONE. It's all lame, not fun, not creative. They're just poor stories with a lot of blood spilling out for no purpose. As a fan who watched all the previous movies, I'm so disappointed. It doesn't even look like a V/H/S movie from the franchise. Viral seems good after seeing this one. I hope next year they get back on track.

A serviceable but unremarkable addition to the franchise

I have always been a fan of the V/H/S franchise ever since I saw the first two movies, with the second one being my favorite to date. Therefore, I am always excited for a new release, and since it has become a yearly tradition for a new V/H/S movie to come out, I obviously anticipated this one. Its Halloween theme sounded interesting and brought a lot of potential for some creative and spooky segments.

Overall, I can say that this is a decent anthology movie that has its moments. However, I am rather disappointed because I had high hopes for more engaging content. I felt that the segments ranged between enjoyable and just watchable, with no true standout that really managed to scare me or fully entertain me with its ideas and execution.

The frame narrative "Diet Phantasma", directed and written by Bryan M. Ferguson, had some funny and gory moments. However, it felt a little out of place and did not connect to the other segments the way earlier installments used to, which was disappointing and disrupted the overall tone of the movie. [5.9/10]

The first real segment, called "Coochie Coochie Coo", written and directed by Anna Zlokovic, was probably my favorite. I enjoyed its absurd ideas and the strange atmosphere it created. It is one of the scarier segments in the franchise and features some good effects and a unique vibe. [6.3/10]

The next segment, directed by Paco Plaza-who is the only director I was genuinely familiar with-was called "Ut Supra Sic Infra", which basically means "as above, so below." I was excited about it since I really liked the 2013 movie of the same name. Sadly, this segment felt like it passed too quickly and did not leave a lasting impression, as it lacked anything particularly original or remarkable. It is a decent segment, but I expected more from Plaza. [6.0/10]

The next segment, called "Fun Size" and written and directed by Casper Kelly, was, as the name suggests, probably the most fun one. It has a truly absurd premise that requires you to lean into its ridiculousness for it to work. The segment does not really have clear rules and feels random at times, but it features some entertaining ideas and decent gore. [6.1/10]

"Kidprint", written and directed by Alex Ross Perry, is probably the most realistic of all the segments but also my least favorite. It does not offer anything particularly memorable and has a rather tame approach to its premise. [5.5/10]

The final segment, "Home Haunt", written and directed by Micheline Pitt-Norman and R. H. Norman, has a fun idea but is probably the one with the most wasted potential. The very shaky camera work is distracting, and just as the action begins to pick up, the segment abruptly ends, which also marks the end of the movie. [6.1/10]

Overall, this is a decent anthology movie with segments that are all equally watchable, but none truly stood out or surprised me in the way some of the previous entries in the franchise have. I expected more creatures and genuine chaos, but it often felt as though the filmmakers sacrificed storytelling for simple gore effects. While the gore is enjoyable, it is not enough to carry an entire segment. This is not the worst entry in the franchise, but it is certainly not the best either. I hope the next V/H/S installment will return to some of the franchise's original strengths. [6.0/10]

Gore-a-Thon of Tales

Be prepared for a gore-a-thon of mayhem with this latest installment into the V/H/S family tree of terrifying tales.

Intro is a poor fool and a trial of some sort that goes horribly horribly wrong for him.

Next we've got tricks or treats Time for one and all, but seems like they're more tricks than treats this year, so you better watch out for "The Mommy" boys and girls, pssst "Coochie Coo." Freaking disturbing is an obvious understatement with this segment, be prepared. Our Halloween party goes awry, and we end up with a serious problem on our hands that needs to be reenacted as best as possible.

Remember only take one candy when trick or treating folks, no really... Fun Size...

The Worst of the series

I seldom leave reviews but felt compelled to warn fellow horror enthusiasts to avoid this steaming pile. Nauseatingly unpleasant, irritating, grating, and just plain stupid - it stands out as the worst horror film I have seen in a LONG TIME. The concepts are easily the dumbest of any anthology film I've ever come across. I make a point out of looking for things to like in low-budget horror flicks but there's just nothing to enjoy here. Even the FX are subpar. Ugh! And don't be fooled by the (hitherto) solid average rating. The producers must be review bombing the hell out it because I cannot rationalize anything above a 3 or 4 star average. Check out the original instead.

Without a doubt among the lesser entries in the Franchise - 51%

VHS yet again delivered on its promise of unadultered, uncensored violence and gore, with a nearly inestimable body count, but unfortunately, all this was at the expense of any coherent story-telling, relatability, scene setting, and most importantly: convincing theatrical techniques. The middle entry - Fun Size, was horrifying enough, but the acting was terrible. It also features some of the most incompetent adolescents that ever graced our screens in the horror genre - which is even more disconcerting than the man-made candy contained within the wrappers... that says a lot.

The second entry feels like a random insertion of anything that is occult enough to be deserving of mention. However, I dare to disagree. Ut supra, sic infra is just a clumsy, contrived mock crime mini-docu that has very little, if anything, to do with Halloween lore. That is another problem with this film: either the lore is not explained, vague, or unrelated to the festivities of Halloween. Only the last entry hastily alludes to the legend of Samhain, which singularly inspired the presence of ghosts, ghouls, pumpkins, etc., and the use of blood smearing lest Samhain, when rising on the day the darkest half of the year begins, may see and smite you along with his infernal gang of the undead. I appreciate the frame narrative of American Halloween traditions, but the origins were unfortunately, not given the respect they deserve.

I also do not understand the Phantasma Light entry, although I very much enjoyed it as a critique of social experimentation. The onslaught of violence is too random and contrived to take seriously. The scientists involved also seem strangely distinterested and incompetent. They should have been served with some karma, i.e., poltergeist flaying or some other form of utter disintegration such as what did happen in 1984's last entry.

The squalor and perverseness of the first entry "Coochy-coochy-coo" should have been transferred to the other entries as well. It is highly atmospherical, has effective developmental sequences, has very good theatrical performances, and an utterly disturbing, soul-destroying conclusion. If all entries of the film were as strong, it could have been a 75-80%.

Two hours of screaming....

I've never been more exhausted from watching a movie than what I've just experienced. Nothing worth wasting two hours to watch. Only thing slightly interesting was the Barbarian rip off or "homage" close to the beginning. Lots of attempted shock attempts that shocked no one. Yelling at your audience doesn't equal a horror movie. Worst movie watched this year. All the good reviews must have been paid. Worst vhs movie from the series and I'm shocked at the reviews that were positive. I feel like the whole series has only went down from the first. Maybe they will eventually revisit the origins bitch because it was an enjoyable watch. I expect an attempt at a better version next year and hope it gets better.

V/H/S

Let's face it, the V/H/S franchise hasn't been great since 2013. The last five entries being a mixed bag of cheap effects and Hallmark level acting.

The self-awareness is dialled up to 11 here. "Diet Phantasma" a decidedly superior wraparound to 'Beyond'. "Ut Supra Sic Infra" refreshingly creepy without the final gag.

"Kidprint" goes to show this series can still be disturbing minus the unconvincing splatter. Slighter emphasis on this may go some way in masking the budget restraints of becoming a shudder original.

It's sad what has become of this series.

The first two films in this series were really very good. Unfortunately, that's exactly the problem.

It's like a band whose first albums you really liked. You eagerly bought the latest record in the hope of more great things to come.

Only, at a certain point, unfortunately quite early on, there were no more great things to come. At best, there were records that were okay, if at all.

It's exactly the same with the V/H/S series.

From the third part onwards, there was at best one really good segment. But hey, at least it gave you a certain thrill, waiting to see if the next segment would be the hoped-for "unexpected" hit.

Well, in the latest installment of this series, it's sad to say that there's no longer such a hit.

At best, two segments ("Fun Size" and "Home Haunt") were halfway okay, with the former being just acceptable and the latter almost passing as not too bad.

Overall, unfortunately a waste of time. It's sad to see what has become of this former found footage giant.

Oh, and to those who are upset about others beeing upset about "kidprint": Are you really so desensitized that you don't care when children and teenagers are brutally tortured? And that the perpetrator gets away with it? So there's no catharsis at all? People like that probably don't even realize how brutalized and desensitized they are...

Not a bad addition to the series. Not great though.

This film felt a disjointed. I prefer the V/H/S films that have a running background story behind the different stories. There's no explanation as why to the audience is viewing the clips. The acting is about like the earlier films, some actors are decent, some are awful. The quality of the stories are more consistent the some of the previous films, so that was a plus. Worth a watch if you like the previous films or anthology films.

Worst of the lot

Out of all the vhs movies this one is a joke. Literally the joker of the pack. I hate to do this but this is a 1 star movie. Oh how the mighty have fallen. What used to be the best of horror anthology movies this tainted a very brilliant series. I hope they fix this and go back to actual horror and not pathetic jokey horror.
