My ideal movie normally consists of explosions, fighting and death defying stunts. This movie has none of that. But the wife currently is trying to open my eyes to different genres of movies, and currently movie's from her childhood, and for the most part, I'm not entirely convinced she ever watched many good movies. I have been forced to watch some real stinkers.

So when tonight she turned this movie on, I was ready to tap out. I have maybe only seen one or two Lohan pictures in my time, and definitely would not call myself a fan, and Dennis Quaid has always been a actor who's popularity I have never fully understood. So even before the play button was pressed, I'm dreading it.

Movies finished, and it honestly pains me to say it, it's a good movie, there I said it. Honestly, I struggled the first half or so, probably too childish a movie for me, felt very Nickelodeon. But after all the pranks and a actual story forms, well it becomes enjoyable.

Personally I can't justify rating it any higher, although I won't argue with anyone else who would, it's just the type of movie I would likely rewatch any time soon. But I'll give credit where it's due, characters are well written and that is only amplified by the dedicated performances from the actors, especially surprisingly Lindsay Lohan, who convincingly tackles duo roles and does it extremely well. Even Quaid didn't annoy me this time round, so for all the actors, I applaud them, and of course a memorable performance from the late Natasha Richardson (R. I. P)

It's just a nice movie. And sadly these types of movies are not readily available anymore, Disney has a completely new politically aimed way of filming now, and carefree fun movies seem like distant memories. So if you're worried that 90s family movies will warp your child's brain, give yourself a smack and snap out of it.

It's a family movie with likeable characters, and I imagine most children will love it given the chance. Like I said, hurts me to say it, but I would definitely recommend.

I made the mistake of watching the newly released remake before watching this original movie. And while this movie is far from perfect, it is definitely, no competition, a lot more entertaining than the remake.

I actually enjoyed the whole pacing of the movie, when Thrillers don't work they tend to drag on for a lifetime, but this movie running at near two hours pretty much flew by. While it may not be wholly original in terms of subject matter it's entertaining enough.

This is majorly contributed by the performance of Rebecca De Mournay who is the backbone of this movie. While it's difficult to even remotely relate to her character due to the subject matter, she is absolutely thrilling to watch in a villianess role

While I could praise De Mournay all day for her performance, I can't quite say the same for the other cast members. And that's not to say there are terribly bad performances, but in comparison to Mournay, they are acted off the screen. Ernie Hudson was ok, and different from his past performances, I just wasn't totally convinced by Annabella Sciora and on screen husband Matt McCoy.

Ultimately tho, it's a entertaining little 90s thriller that 30+ years later has aged pretty well. I think potentially it could of been better, and maybe played it to safe with the script. I think if they aimed for a older certificate rating and played it out more psychologically with the content it could of been something special.

But I'll give praise when it's deserved, Mournay was incredible and it's definitely worth a watch.

Disney really are a mixed bag for me, they find ways to impress me, yet at the same time irritate me. I commend them for putting forward to screen stories of real life figures, who if not for these movie's I may never have any acknowledgement of them or their accomplishments. And while I agree countless women have had their stories slowly muted from history, I don't necessarily agree with Disney's approach to giving them a voice, especially in this movie.

Gertrude (Trudy) Ederle was and always should be thought of as a inspiration, she was a incredible accomplished and a extremely motivated woman, who completed events such as the Channel crossing, amongst others, that most normal people just wouldn't have the courage and stamina to even attempt. And their is no denying that she was doing these things at a complex time, where women still never had the rights that a lot of men like me would of had.

And don't Disney just love telling us that. If you know anything about the true story, then Trudy acknowledged difficulties she faced, especially having women looked at professionally. But every man she crossed didn't look down upon her as shown in this highly fictitious tale. It seems every man she meets believes women should not have the ability to swim. I'm sorry thats ridiculous. That's a agenda pushed by this studio to make us all think men are fundamentally evil. We ain't.

Normally I'd rate this movie lower for that, but truth is, even tho it slightly dampens my rating, I give credit where it's due. I think as of 2025, this is Daisy Ridleys finest most professional performance, and the first big sign to me that she may still have a promising career ahead of her, she does a terrific job at making this character believable, vulnerable at times but focused.

It's wonderfully shot by a director I'm normally critical of, Joachim Ronning. Everything to me, from the set pieces to costumes looks convincing enough to me from the period, it's nicely paced, and if you can look past some of the dramatisation and fictitious elements, there is a inspirational and moving story. So for that, I really can't justify rating lower than 7.

I for one, believed that once Star Wars ended, Daisy would disappear, forever tied to one role. I'm happy to have been proven wrong, and hopefully she is now taken more seriously as a promising young talented actress.
