The Midnight Man completes a trio of urban myth genre horror movies I've seen recently, including The By Bye Man (2017) and Truth or Dare (2018). All three are genuine contenders. Midnight Man has the best 'monster' by far, and great effects. I wondered if The Bye Bye Man borrowed from it, as in essence they are very similar.... a very creepy house, three late teen friends on edge, all three innocently snaffooed into a creep-out not really of their choosing, and both had a very similar voodoo demon type ghost guy. The atmosphere in Midnight Man is superb, with terrific atmosphere and lighting, perfect sets and easily the best sound design of the three. However, as you'd expect, in many ways the two latter movies are improvements in the genre. In the Midnight Man there is at least one unbelievable plot design, where two friends leave a third in dire peril promising to be back as soon as possible. 'As soon as possible' flies out the window as soon as they retreat, first having a long conversation with no sense of urgency between themselves, then another with another character whom happened by because of worry. In other words, they doom their friend to die alone whilst having long chats. The new character then goes on to describe the death as an inevitable 'aperitif'. You see my point. Not only does behaviour not make any sense, but it is compounded by a very cheesy script. There are several instances of this script cheesiness in the second half that go against the grain of the superbly built atmosphere. The cheese even makes it's way into the epilogue. Hollywood writers can't keep inserting late teens into staring roles just so they can be lazy about storylines and dialogue, basically, on the all forgiving premise that teens are stupid, uncaring, forgetful and erratic. I really do hope this trend is abandoned by better writing. You are letting the team down guys! Mind you, the opening scenes for Midnight Man are brilliant, involving children. I'd love to see a sequel where children take over from the teens in the staring roles. This was done recently in The Haunting of Hill House (2018) to great effect. Indeed, Midnight Man may have influenced that show. The actors for Midnight Man were very good, but the script let them down a lot, and too much was asked of the young lead. Overall, The Midnight Man is a great horror feature, provided you don't think too much, and a welcome addition to the urban myth horror genre.
