I do enjoy Asian cinema and have always had a particular love of the Hong Kong cinema. So as I had the opportunity to sit down here late in 2022 to watch the 2013 crime drama "Sap Ching 298-03" (aka "Probation Order"), of course I did so without even blinking.
Writer Hung-Wah Leung delivered a somewhat bland script and storyline here for the movie. I was only mildly entertained by the movie here, but perhaps director Hung-Wah Leung and Selina Kam were aiming at a more young audience than what I would be considered. A lot of the things that transpired in the storyline felt random and erratic, as if writer Hung-Wah Leung was making it up on the fly.
And I have to say that the character gallery in "Sap Ching 298-03" was sort of flaccid. Most of the characters felt like copy-paste characters just put into the storyline, because they were rather indistinguishable from one another.
I wasn't familiar with the entire cast ensemble in "Sap Ching 298-03", expect of actor Kai-Chi Liu. However, there wasn't any outstanding performances that I noticed in the movie, and I think it was because of the dubious character gallery that the actors and actresses had to work with.
While I managed to sit through "Sap Ching 298-03" in all of its 109 minutes, then I was only mildly entertained by what transpired on the screen. If you are a fan of the Hong Kong cinema, then "Sap Ching 298-03" is not a movie that I would warmly recommend you to waste your time, money or effort on. And this is definitely not a movie that I will be returning to watch a second time.
My rating of "Sap Ching 298-03" lands on a four out of ten stars.
