"History tends to prove me wrong," says one of the featured trend forecasters, in a bizarre negation of his own alleged expertise. Basically, these people are the twenty-first century equivalent of the Sophists of ancient Greece. They get paid a lot of money for saying a lot of nothing about anything, and for culling scraps of culture so that businesses can make decisions and move forward with mass production to sell their wares to as many consumers as possible. Does it matter whether the next Pantone color of the year is janitorial green or scarlet fever pink? No, not in the least.
