The main characters in 'First Man On Mars' first appeared in Mike Lyddon's (with John R. Woods) 1980 super-8 horror-comedy 'Mutilation Maniacs'. In that film, 'Dick Ruffman' was the Chief of Police, rather than the Sheriff. The coroner in 'First Man On Mars' is named Fritz Leiber. In 'Mutilation Maniacs', the virtually identical character is named Fred Sadizmo. FMOM's deputy 'Jordy Sample' was a character developed (with that name) for an unmade sequel to 'Mutilation Maniacs' called 'Invasion Of The Water Devils'. 'Mutilation Maniacs' was released as an 'extra' on Lyddon's 'Night For Nixie' DVD.
At 16:52 there are references to the TV series "Lost in Space".
At 17:43 the woman says "Guess we can always use a red shirt". This is a reference to the original "Star Trek" in which a character in a red shirt was usually the first to die.
