The Village in the Woods

84 reviews
3/10

Slow. Boring. Nonsense for that matter.

It was a rather unpleasant experience, staying awake for the entire run time of The Village in the Woods, as it provided no scares, tension, just a lot of awkward moments between the characters. Scenes beyond cringy any time there was any interaction on screen, a finale revealing itself midway through, and genuinely no normal reactions from pretty much anyone involved in the plot.

I do believe both the script and the direction were complete misfires, coming off only as, somewhat eerie but relying too much on unnatural moments, decisions and irrational thinking.

I don't find it easy to recommend it, even for the die hard fans of in the woods horrors, I for one felt disappointed and somewhat tricked, into waiting and thinking that maybe there will be more than what was clearly coming, but no such thing happened here.

Cheers!

You can find better.

A couple shows up at a quant inn in the middle of a forest under the pretense that she has inherited it. There's a bunch of overly friendly (and creepy) neighbors who are just as deceitful as the couple, intent on performing an ancient rite with the couple's assistance, whether they agree to or not.

Good stuff: The script was pretty good (although the neighbors sometimes come off too campy), the acting was good, and the set and scenery was lovely, very atmospheric.

Bad stuff: The ending feels very anticlimactic, with little explained. I mean, you get the idea, but it's like they were over on time and had to skim it down to a cliff-notes version of the film.

Rating: 4/10. I don't recommend it unless you're really bored and have nothing going on,

Hammer Horror

I've always liked the hammer horror of days gone. This movie comes in with some classic pointers with a newness. Kim Newman at Empire magazine said Therese Bradley is outstanding... He's not wrong, from her wanting to devour the lead to smiling oddly. Fun little indie movie which is well produced.

3 Stars

Anything above a 3 star rating must have been from the cast and crew because this is not a good movie and as far as "atmosphere" the fog machine was on overdrive so much that I laughed out loud because I could barely see the actors. This is so bad I thought it was a parody at first.

Not terrible, but nearly reaches mediocre! Theresa Bradley saves the film from utter disaster.

I would have given it a lower rating, but I felt that Theresa Bradley and Richard Hope's talented skills really added to the film. Theresa Bradley's character Maddy was excellent, suspicious, creepy, perfectly unsettling and uncomfortable in a good way.

I felt like I was significantly missing information or that important details were left out.

Continuity was also an issue, wine in glasses, hair and the fog scene, to the horrible beast horns CGI moment. Not sure what was going on with hair and make-up for Maddy's hair though, although, it did improve throughout - and maybe that was intentional?

That being said, there was definite potential and a strong opportunity to add a bit more umpf to the rings power. Without being a spoiler review, there was also a major plot line error, 300 years, but then referred to 100 years holding power - so what happens within the 200 years to follow? That did not make any sense, further dismantling the film into a bit of a wee mess.

There is definite room to re-write the screenplay and do a marginal improvement.

Not bad for a low budget.

I'll rate this movie with a six, meaning I'm glad I watched it but that I probably won't watch it again in the future. The Village In The Woods isn't a high budget movie but overall the cinematography wasn't bad at all. A nice gloomy and dark atmosphere, decent actors, and a story that keeps you wondering and guessing. If you want hardcore horror then this one isn't for you. There aren't bloody gory scenes but it for sure has a dark ambiance. Good enough for me.

Six Point Six Stars? Are They Kidding Me?

As of this writing, this waste of time flick was rated 6.6 on IMdb. Based on that relatively high rating alone I sought out this film. I should have known just 1/4 of the way into it that it was going to be a non-violent, sloooooooow, atmospheric film full of cliches and amateur acting. And I was right. There was nothing original in this movie and the ending made no sense. None. Zero. Zip. Total waste of 90 minutes. Skip it.

Creepy, atmospheric and surprisingly refreshing!

Really enjoyed this. Thoughtful and original with some nice inspired performances. It looks amazing too, the fog scenes at night look great.

Don't expect a fast paced, gory horror with lots of jump scares. This is a classy, atmospheric film that makes you think and certainly stays with you.

Worth a watch

The movie is better then the actual trailer. I didn't know what to expect but we found ourselves on the edge of our seats. It was suspsenseful, creepy and the production was top notch. I'm giving it a 7!

Like an episode of Emmerdale Farm

The acting is alright but it looks like bad television ... The storyline is so slow and has nothing particularly interesting to catch your attention ... So you are going to completely loose interest after 10 to 15 minutes ... Although the director tries to make some interesting characters in the villagers it fails dismally ... Its just so mediocre it has no reason to exist ... Mind you I never made it past the 20 minute mark, I walked out of the room and got on with something more interesting ( the washing up )

Complete kak!

Even so late into 2019, this might be the worst movie i've seen this year. Even the crappy ending came as a relief, because i was damn near simply turning it off and going to sleep. 'Low budget' is not an excuse for simply garbage movies..

I can think of no better description for this movie, than it being as if someone really bad at making either one, confused radio theater for motion picture.

Don't waste your time with this one. I regretted doing it since before getting even 20 minutes into it.

Dreadful, Cheap, Terrible! This should warn you about this Shocker

Saw this title had a 6.2 rating so i thought "What the hell, what have I got to lose?". Well I lost 90mins of my life that I could have spent stabbing myself in the eye with a rusty fork, that would have been more enjoyable than this steaming turd. My alarm bells started to ring slightly from the start when there was a shot of a building which was obviously a model with a smoke machine, a cheap looking shot but I thought maybe its a quirky shot.

Everything just went down down down from there on. A story line with characters that made zero sense, and actions that didnt as well.

The storyline is garbage, the characters are idiotic, and it cost about Five dollars to produce. Dont believe the rating on here, this movie is not a 6.2, nowhere near a 6.2. I gave it a "1 Star Rating" because I am forced to give it something, and thats being generous.

Almost a Hammer Horror!

Very atmospheric - literally full of fog. Creepy and suspenseful, well-made. That is apart from a really weird faux pas made by the male lead, when the car he was drivig ran out of fuel, he referred to it as gas, although he almost immediately corrected it to petrol! Since this is a British production, the error is unsettling. Too much use of the fog machine, and too little back story, but otherwise a good film.

Support this film!

I absolutely loved it, it's not fast paced rather it grows on you. Good acting, editing and the film really had me guessing right to the very end. I also have to mention the score in this film is seriously well done. They had all the right elements to make this a solid thriller film. Enjoyed it.

A green-manish tale

A green-manish tale meets a Rosemary's Baby of a couple. It was a dark and stormy night. Our couple is driving off into the wild the better to investigate the inherited property of the wife... Upon arrival they find surprise after surprise; they didn't know it would be so derelict and peopled with such derelicts. I love a green-man tale and this one is lovely. The old witchy woman is beautiful and sexy and hungry, just as she should be. The couple are a weak husband and a strong wife, neither fully invested in this marriage and therefore easy to tear apart.

Good atmosphere but a tad slow

This had all the trappings of a good Brigadoon style horror but although the atmosphere was well created and most of the actors were quite sinister it started to become a bit of a comedy with the cheap fog machine effects, minimal village shots which seem to consist of a 3 house village and lost its way completely throwing in the old wicker man style tropes.

If you want to see how this should really be done then grab a copy of the old 1981 "Monster Club" movie and watch the Humgoo story; it gave me nightmares for years; still does even today over 30 years on and still ranks as one of my all time favourite sinister lost in time village in the woods horror movies even though it is only part of a trilogy it truly was horrific, sinister and had me on the edge of my seat all the way through and the end was perfect. A true 10/10 which means on that it is the best you have ever seen compared to this sad effort and its nearly 40 years on and still they cannot make a movie as good as the Stuart Whitman 1981 short!

Stuart Whitman is cast perfectly as an impatient movie director looking for a remote location to make an atmospheric horror movie. His impatience with his crew leads him to seek out the location himself and he gets lost in the deep English countryside and ends up in a Brigadoon'esque abandoned in time village in the deep mist laden forests and ruled by demons and ghouls who feast on dead corpses from the local graveyard and where the only sanctuary from them is the old church!

I say no more - Give it a go and if I am wrong I will eat my hat, it is truly a magnificent example of how this type of movie should be made but sadly we do not seem to be able to do it even with a budget of over 5 times what the 1981 Humgoo short had to work with in this sorry attempt at recreating what has already been done to death with other films like The Village etc etc etc!

Truly amazing ...

... yes, truly amazing how this movie ever got made; it was profoundly awful, remarkably dull, excruciatingly tedious, and thoroughly amateurish in every way possible. As writer, director, producer, composer, and even editor, Mr McCormack - with cartoon birds circling his head - should be ashamed of himself for taking a school multimedia project and trying to sell it as something other than an overambitious and woefully humdrum piece of twaddle.

Lazy absurd

Outstandingly substandard, predictable and irritating flick. Seems like no parties involved in making the said flick had any idea what they were doing. Not recommended to anyone who values their time.
