Make no mistake about it: this was a great year for horror fans. It was so good, in fact, that making a list of “favorites” is almost impossible because there’s just too much I want to talk about. The independent horror scene continues to crank out new classics and minor gems, but even studio horror was good this year: The Conjuring 2, Don’t Breathe, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lights Out (not my bag, but a lot of people really enjoyed it), The Boy (not a lot of people’s bag, but I really enjoyed it), The Purge: Election Year, and so on. Even better? Pretty much every one of them was successful at the box office. As more and more horror moves are released with the limited release / VOD model, it’s nice to know that good movies still play to big audiences at the multiplex.
And what about horror on TV?...

Scott Schirmer (Found, Harvest Lake) and his Band Motion Pictures, LLC imprint are running a new crowdfunding campaign for an icky little backwoods horror flick called Plank Face. Unllike most campaigns, this one is nearly at its goal and the film is actually already made, so there's no worrying about whether or not you'll see your funds go into something tangible. You can already buy a ticket to the film's world premiere on August 27th with key cast and crew in Columbus, Oh, click here. Plank Face features a protagonist captured by a feral family of cannibals who want him for their tribe. “It deals with our primal nature,” states Schirmer. “The characters in Plank Face live like wild animals, but they’re also very free. So the prospect of...

Director James Bickert (Dear God No!) is currently channeling the likes of Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! in his new film Frankenstein Created Bikers, and we've got an exclusive on the Nsfw red band trailer. Check it out below.Shot in CinemaScope on Super 35mm Kodak celluloid, the film stars Jett Bryant (Dear God No!), Laurence R. Harvey (The Human Centipede 2, The Editor), Tristan Risk (American Mary, The Editor) and Ellie Church (Harvest Lake). Frankenstein Created Bikers was described to me as a two-and-a-half hour "exploitation epic" --- shot over 30 days in 10 cities with a cast of 70 actors. Now that's ambition! No premiere details as of this posting, but stay tuned to the film's Facebook page for news and updates. Bickert says: "I'm really proud of how we merged...

A screener for a strange indie film called Harvest Lake landed in my inbox recently, and instead of a straight review, I decided to interview the filmmakers to get more details on their bizarro opus. Harvest Lake follows four friends who go to a lakeside house to celebrate a birthday with sex, drugs, booze, a campfire, and more sex. It's not quite a horror film, not really an exploitation flick, and I'm undecided if it could be classified as science fiction. Due to its elevated score and photography, the film encapsulates all of these genres and more, with some odd surreal moments that will surprise its viewers --- with Tristan Risk (American Mary, The Editor) stealing every scene she's even --- even if those scenes include alien appendages. The film...

Harvest Lake is written and directed by Scott Schirmer and stars Ellie Church, Tristan Risk, Jason Crowe, Dan Dye and Kevin Roach. Producers include Arthur Cullipher and Brian Williams.
Harvest Lake is about a group of four horny adults who rent a cabin in the woods. Yes, this has been the setup for literally thousands of horror films, but in the case of Harvest Lake, the usual formula is thrown out for something completely different. There are strange fungi growing in these woods that have the visual and tactile qualities of human sex organs. These fungi fascinate and seduce our campers one by one, and ejaculate spoors into their faces that lower their sexual inhibitions and ultimately take over their bodies for the purpose of sex.
Although Harvest Lake is conceptually brilliant, it is also kind of a confounding film to review, because it...
