Horace and Pete is a true original, a melding of contemporary politics and serialized storytelling with a throwback approach to in-studio drama harkening back to 1950s television. The cast is exceptional, with particular notice to Alan Alda, Laurie Metcalf, and Edie Falco. The script tackles a range of issues, from mental illness to transgender acceptance, with a sense of engagement and respect without being preachy or heavy handed. Creator Louis C.K. embraced a DIY approach, taking risks to finance and produce the series through an innovative digital distribution model outside the conventional television industry. For a truly independent and groundbreaking demonstration of how quality television is expertly done in the new media environment, all the while building upon decades of artistry and craft, Horace and Pete receives a Peabody Award.
