The storyline and designs in this game are based on the IDW "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle" comics.
Fred Tatasciore who voices Rocksteady in this video game, had previously voiced Rocksteady in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012) with a Russian accent. Here, he uses Rocksteady's classic American voice.
Michelangelo tells Armaggon that there is already a king in the sewers. This is a homage to the TMNT supervillain the Rat King, who is the only villain who doesn't appear in this game.
Nolan North, who voices Splinter, Shredder and Leonardo in this TMNT feature, had previously voiced Raphael in TMNT (2007) and the Kraang in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012).
