For a show that can’t escape the term “prescient,” it’s fitting that one critic knew exactly what would doom “The Handmaid’s Tale” before anyone else even knew it was doomed. Not me, of course. I would never claim such credit even if I deserved it. But in her 2017 review of the first season, New Yorker critic Emily Nussbaum (who won the Pulitzer Prize just a year earlier) framed her critique in the sturdy housing of history.
She starts off noting the adaptation’s “grotesque timeliness,” arriving just a few months into Trump’s first term, while also noting how many other critics have noted the same thing. So she shifts gears, appraising the American landscape that received Margaret Atwood’s esteemed book: “Just a decade earlier,” Nussbaum writes, “a woman could be denied a credit card without a man to co-sign, and yet, by 1985, when the novel was written,...

Whether or not anybody really wanted a fourth Matrix movie (we didn’t), getting Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne to reprise Neo, Trinity and Morpheus was clutch. There was only one problem: Laurence Fishburne wasn’t going to be in The Matrix Resurrections. And while the story was originally that Fishburne was never asked, the actor now says he actually tried to be a part of it.
Appearing on The View, Laurence Fishburne claimed that he approached those making The Matrix Resurrections but was quickly turned away. “I offered my services to the fourth Matrix, and they didn’t respond well to that. Hey, it’s not like I didn’t say, ‘I’d like to offer my services.’ I did. And for whatever reason, that didn’t happen, Ok.” Instead, he would be replaced by The Trial of the Chicago 7’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, playing an entity merely embodying the character.

What do you get when you mix Nora Ephron with Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers? The combination might seem antithetical, but it works scarily well in director Josh Ruben‘s sweet, funny, terrifying rom-com/slasher movie mash-up, “Heart Eyes.”
Working from an inventive script by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy, Ruben somehow deftly satisfies fans of both “Sleepless in Seattle” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” An iconic new horror villain is born in the form of the movie’s Heart Eyes Killer, a slasher who stalks young lovers each Valentine’s Day.
Ruben, as he explained to IndieWire, wanted the movie’s two sides to be equally strong so that the horror would deepen the romance made all the more terrifying because of our investment in the two young lovers (Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding) fleeing from the Heart Eyes Killer. In studying films of both genres,...

One video resurfaced, and it stirred some curiosity. P. Diddy and Tracee Ellis Ross appeared together, casually toasting shots of vodka. But something seemed off: Ross looked like she was just pretending to drink. Were they really sipping vodka, or was it all for show? The visual raised questions and got people talking.

The Matrix vet Carrie-Anne Moss opened up about the difference between her Jedi training for Star Wars: The Acolyte and her action experience with the Keanu Reeves-led sci-fi franchise. In the upcoming Disney+ series, Moss will be portraying a Jedi master named Indara, who, as seen in the trailers, will have an intense fight sequence with Amandla Stenbergs character.
Speaking with Empire, Moss confirmed that her training for The Acolyte took three to four weeks long, which definitely felt different from her previous experience of preparing for Trinitys action sequences in The Matrix movies. "I think all of my history of learning to fight and-This was very different though, because I was by myself. I had always done [The Matrix] with my co-stars, and theres a certain energy," she said. "[On The Acolyte ] I was on my own, with my team, which was great because I got to ignite and access a part of myself.

The It Crowd was a British workplace comedy that aired from 2006 to 2013 — here are The It Crowd best episodes. From The Office to 30 Rock, the 2000s was a golden era for workplace comedies and The It Crowd was definitely one of the best of them. Following the shenanigans of a dysfunctional It Department, this BAFTA-winning series was clever, wonderfully absurd, and truly one of a kind. Starring Chris O'Dowd (Bridesmaids), Richard Ayoade (The Watch), and Katherine Parkinson (Easy Virtue) as the three leads, The It Crowd followed the bumbling It department of Reynholm Industries and their excursions both in and outside of work.
Lasting four seasons and one special, shows like The It Crowd are hard to come by and the series had a range of memorable episodes. The It Crowd profited from its absurdist situational humor and comedic efforts from the main ensemble trio. Over the course of the series,...

There are plenty of stories about criminals, their paths to salvation, and being mired in a cycle of poor decisions. “Florida Man” recounts the same narrative in a more humorous and pulpy tone. With excellent performances and an intricate plotline, the series pulls off the feat of providing an entertaining show to a specific sort of audience that is always craving crime thrillers. However, too many subplots, turns, and twists in “Florida Man” final episode feel unnecessary and seem to have been inserted simply to extend the story rather than bring it to a satisfying conclusion. From the very start of the series, the several subplots didn’t bore us, but at the ending, it felt predictable and didn’t really surprise us. However, let’s explore the ending to know better where the story of “Florida Man ” actually headed.

Maya Hawke was the musical guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night. The Stranger Things star and singer/songwriter performed “Thérèse,” a cut from her recent sophomore album Moss.
Clad in a gold crown and an elaborate velvet dress, Hawke looked particularly regal as she took over the Fallon stage. Adding an unexpected twist, she kicked off the performance with the final moments of her song “South Elroy,” the track that appears right before “Thérèse” on Moss, before its seamless transition into the main song of the night.
Hawke might be best known to most audiences as Robin Buckley from Hawkins, Indiana, but her Fallon guest appearance proved that she can steal scenes on both the stage and the screen. Check out Maya Hawke’s enchanting performance of “Thérèse” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon below.

Stranger Things star Maya Hawke performed her single “Thérèse” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday — but the actorly performance she delivered would have been better served on a theatre stage.
Inspired by the Balthus painting “Thérèse dreaming,” the song from Hawke’s latest album Moss tells the tale of a young woman trapped inside of a painting and the inability for anyone to see her as anything beyond the still image she was captured as. On stage at Fallon, the singer leaned into her acting background and...

Sundance debut Sorry to Bother You opens in seven markets this weekend via Annapurna, which picked up the title out of the festival. Written and directed by Boots Riley, the genre-bending fantasy-sic-fi stars Lakeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson. Cannes 2018 doc Whitney will go out in well several hundred locations, hoping to tap the momentum of docs Rbg, Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and Three Identical Strangers, which have had robust theatrical runs this spring/summer. Time will tell whether the Whitney Houston pic can replicate the success of the 2015 Amy Winehouse doc Amy, which also spotlighted a musical sensation who died way too soon. That A24 release took in more than $8.4M and an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. And Breaking Glass Pictures is opening Daniel Peddle’s adventure-drama Moss in two New York and L.A. locations ahead of an on-demand release July 10.

A mini-odyssey set on the title character’s 18th birthday, Moss is a quiet, slender drama that resounds with hefty questions. Writer-director Daniel Peddle has made three documentaries and one previous narrative feature (Sunset Edge), each concerned with marginal, unsung or isolated lives, and here he delves into a fascinating rural world, captivatingly undeveloped. With its sensory immersion in nature and its yearning characters, the gorgeously shot film is a memorable study of solitude and connection.
