Loren Ruch, the content chief at HGTV and host of its HGTV House Party, has died. He was 55.

Ruch had been battling acute myeloid leukemia.

Earlier in his HGTV tenure, Ruch produced shows like Brother vs. Brother and the HGTV Dream Home specials. As head of content, Ruch oversaw Celebrity Iou, A Very Brady Renovation, Property Brothers: Forever Home, My Lottery Dream Home, Bargain Mansions and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Ruch previously worked at other Discovery-owned cable channels: Food Network, Travel Channel, DIY Network, Cooking Channel and Great American Country.

Prior to his Discovery career, Ruch spent 10 years at Fox’s Good Day LA; he won five Emmys there. Ruch started his career in daytime talk and game shows, including Home & Family, Love Connection and Family Feud.

Magnolia Network’s 2023 October lineup includes new seasons of Ranch to Table, Maine Cabin Masters, Makeover by Monday, and In the Kitchen with Abner and Amanda. In addition, First Time Fixer, Beach Cottage Chronicles, Diary of an Old Home, and Bargain Mansions new seasons will be available to stream this month.

The streamer didn’t announce when viewers can expect new seasons of Artfully Designed or Happy to be Home with the Benkos but did confirm both shows will return for second seasons. Magnolia Network also announced The Established Home has earned a third season order.

Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Network has renewed “Art in Bloom with Helen Dealtry” and “Restored,” and it has ordered three new cooking and renovation series while also revealing its August slate of premiere dates.

Premiering this fall are new shows “Big Sky Kitchen with Eduardo Garcia” (working title), “La Pitchoune: Cooking in France” and “Weekend Makeover” with DIY expert Jenni Yolo. “Art in Bloom” has been picked up for a third season and “Restored” for a seventh season, both set to premiere in the coming months.

“Big Sky Kitchen with Eduardo Garcia” centers on the Montana-based chef as he invites viewers into his kitchen, where he prepares meals drawn from his Latin and Jewish heritage, using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Magnolia has orderes six half-hour episodes of the series from Linguine Prods.

Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines have joined forces with Discovery for the linear launch of the Magnolia Network, which is replacing the DIY Network on January 5, 2022 at 9 Pm Est. The launch kicks off with Fixer Upper: Welcome Home, the first show in a slate of original series planned to air on the network. Other series scheduled include Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines, Restoration Road with Clint Harp, Home Work, The Lost Kitchen, Family Dinner, The Johnnyswim Show, Super Dad, and the entire five-season Fixer Upper library. Existing DIY Network fan-favorites will also join the Magnolia roster, including new seasons of Maine Cabin Masters, Barnwood Builders, Restoring Galveston, and Bargain Mansions. Magnolia initially launched earlier this year on the Discovery Plus streaming platform and dedicated Magnolia app. The service featured more than 150 hours of unscripted programming related to home, design, and gardening. However, the plan was always to expand into a linear cable network.

The channel’s debut — a rare event in an era of streaming fixation and a shrinking pay-tv bundle, will come in the form of a rebrand of Discovery’s existing DIY Network. The first show to air on Magnolia will be Fixer Upper: Welcome Home, which returns the Gaineses to the hosting role that helped make them stars of TV and branded merchandise.

The launch is among Discovery’s many significant moves in 2021. At the start of the year, the company launched direct-to-consumer streaming service Discovery+, which includes select Magnolia programming. The company has also entered into an agreement to combine with WarnerMedia in a new entity to be spun out from AT&T. The companies expect regulatory approval of the transaction by mid-2022.

But a linear cable network remains key to the endeavor, which aims to take the Gaines — best known for their “Fixer Upper” series on HGTV — and put them at the center of a home-arts programming universe in much the same way others tried to do with Martha Stewart and other domestic-arts gurus.

Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia app is set to launch on July 15, 2021, it was announced Thursday. On cable, Discovery’s DIY Network will rebrand as the Magnolia Network in January 2022.

The Magnolia app will be a free add-on for Discovery+ subscribers. That wasn’t always the plan — or at least, it was not always the extent of the plan. Originally, the partnership between Discovery, Inc. and the Gaineses was going to result in the linear cable channel (DIY), a TV Everywhere app and a standalone Magnolia SVOD service. However, the creation and recent launch of the all-encompassing Discovery+ streaming service changed the plans for that final piece.

In addition to episodic entertainment content, the Magnolia app will also include workshops, recipes and have a retail shopping platform, among other functionalities. So there will still be plenty of opportunities for monetization.

HGTV said Wednesday that it will add six additional one-hour episodes to the third season of Tamara Day’s Bargain Mansions. The new episodes are set to premiere in November.

Starring Day, Bargain Mansions follows the Kansas City designer and mother of four as she seeks to flip rundown houses into luxury homes for families. With every renovation, Day collaborates with her mentor and father, Ward Schraeder, to ensure the homes offer families unique architectural charm and modernized layouts.

Bargain Mansions’ Season 3 has been the series’ highest rated, HGTV said.

“Bargain Mansions” host Tamara Day didn’t “expect to cry” on her episode of Hgtv’s latest coronavirus-era show “Design at Your Door,” but she did — and more than once. You might too.

For Night 1 of the new series — a season she guest stars on twice — Day was tasked with conceptualizing, designing, shopping for, and guiding a family via webcam in redoing their guest room. Due to Hgtv’s partnership on the program, the Kansas City native who is used to renovating mansions had to buy all the supplies on Walmart.com.

Day told TheWrap she “was really pleasantly surprised” by the “variety” of items on the inexpensive big box store’s website: “It took me longer than it should have because I got sucked into it,” she said of the furniture and decor decisions.
