Few things in one’s life inspire more joy and fear than childbirth and becoming a parent. Though probably not the fears that Marie faces at the start of The Institute. Snake-like arms and hands emerge from the walls of a cave and tear the fetus from her body.
It’s a nightmare born out of frustration. Marie and her husband Daniel have been trying to become parents but with no luck and it’s affecting their marriage and her mental health. And then Daniel stumbles across Dr. Arthur Lands (Mark Lobene) and his secluded fertility clinic which claims to offer a radical solution to their problem.

When Rolling Stone asked Stephen King to pick his best book in 2014, he didn’t go for an obvious candidate like The Stand, The Shining, It, Carrie, or Misery. Instead, he picked the relatively obscure Lisey’s Story. The 2006 novel centers around a woman who travels to an alternate universe while trying to come to terms with the death of her husband.
“That one felt like an important book to me because it was about marriage, and I’d never written about that,” King said. “I wanted to talk about...

The Inventory Will Be Drawn Up At 11a.m. In The Presence Of The Poet’s Wife wins the French competition while the US-directed feature film dominates the international selection. Composed of Rémi Bonhomme (artistic director of the Marrakech Film Festival) and filmmakers Yolande Zauberman, Hassen Ferhani, Laetitia Moreau and Juruna Mallon, the Feature Films Jury of the 43rd Cinéma du Réel Film Festival (which unspooled online) has named the first feature film of US director Ephraim Asili, The Inheritance, its victor within the international competition. The title interlaces the histories of the West Philadelphia–based Move Organization and of the Black Arts Movement with dramatizations of the filmmaker’s life when he was a member of a black activist collective. CBS All Access‘ limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” will premiere Dec. 17, the streamer announced Tuesday.
The series will be a weekly one, with each of the subsequent eight episodes streaming one at a time every Thursday following that premiere. As previously announced, King penned the finale and also wrote a new coda that will take the story beyond where is 800-plus page 1978 tome left things.
“During the two years we spent making ‘The Stand,’ we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant,” said showrunner Benjamin Cavell. “We’re honored to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades.

Jason Segel, the creator, writer, director, producer and star of the innovative AMC series Dispatches From Elsewhere, said it straight out during Deadline’s Contenders Television virtual event: he is essentially playing himself.
“My character starts out not knowing who he is and by the 10th episode I become Jason Segel – literally by name. I wanted to write something from my gut. It became really important to me when I looked at what I was doing and where I was going in my life and career to try to challenge myself, to make something that felt like a piece of art. It had been a long time,“ he said of the AMC series, which is based on a documentary called The Institute and involves four characters on a kind of unending scavenger hunt that reveals more about themselves than they ever bargained for.
He describes it all as art in the act of defiance.

Jason Segel, Eve Lindley and André Benjamin joined the Variety Streaming Room for a Q&a after a screening of the first episode from their new TV series, “Dispatches From Elsewhere.” Moderated by Variety senior editor Michael Schneider, the stars discussed the making of the series, their connection to their characters and what they hope the audience takes away from the show.
“Dispatches From Elsewhere” was created by Segel and premiered March 1 on AMC. Based on Jeff Hull and Spencer McCall’s documentary “The Institute,” the show follows four normal people who discover an alternate reality puzzle and fall deeper into its realm while attempting to solve the mystery behind it.
Segel said he became fascinated with writing about the topic after watching “The Institute,” while preparing for his role as David Foster Wallace in 2015’s “The End of the Tour.” The documentary follows a 2008 alternate reality game set in...

(Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the finale of “Dispatches From Elsewhere.”)
As the spooky, surprise-filled ride that was Jason Segel’s “Dispatches From Elsewhere” came to an end for viewers last month with a finale that actually incorporated some of those viewers. The final moments of the AMC series closed with a compilation of more than 100 self-recorded videos featuring people saying a crucial line from the show: “I am [insert name here], and I am you.”
Now the way Segel and the “Dispatches” team got these clips — made by people who did not originally know that they were going to be used in the show — was in true “Dispatches” fashion: through an alternate reality game (Arg).
“From when the show was greenlit, Jason already had this in his head that he wanted to sort of share the experience that he had when he came up with the show when he first encountered this game,...

Fiction may be stranger than truth in “Dispatches from Elsewhere,” the new anthology series inspired by a true story that premiered on March 1 on AMC. It was created by “How I Met Your Mother” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” star Jason Segel, who wrote and directed the pilot episode and stars as a man who becomes entangled in a mysterious game that may just be a prank, but may be more than it seems. Does this dramatic turn from the usually comedic actor and writer appeal to critics?

This month, viewers will have their choice of fictional dystopias (in addition to the real one happening outside our doors, naturally). You can visit an alternate reality America in which fascism has taken hold, clock in at a tech company with a possibly sinister secret, or simply dip back in to the A.I.-run-amuck nightmare that is Westworld. If that’s not scary enough, there’s also a new dark comedy about parenthood and a chance to relive the 2016 election. All this, plus a reboot of Steven Spielberg’s anthology show from the ’80s.

Mark Friedman, showrunner for AMC's mysterious Dispatches from Elsewhere, says the show is about the beauty of the world.
Nobody really knows how to fully describe AMC drama Dispatches from Elsewhere…not even the person tasked with shepherding it.
“My agent at the time read the script and was like, ‘This is crazy. Are you sure?’” showrunner Mark Friedman says. “And that was kind of what I liked about it. It's a risk. What makes you nervous is what makes something appealing, at least to me.”
Created by TV star Jason Segel, Dispatches from Elsewhere is indeed a bit of a risk. Loosely based on a real life alternate reality game held in the Bay Area in 2010, the show follows four every day individuals who find themselves dissatisfied with the monotony of day-to-day life. Alex Ross Perry (“Her Smell”) will write and direct the adaptation of Stephen King’s best-seller “The Dark Half” for MGM, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The story had been previously turned into a 1993 MGM film, which starred Timothy Hutton. It followed an author whose crime thrillers under a pseudonym sold better than the books written with his real name. Once his pseudonym is exposed, he decides to give his other ego a burial, but things start turning sinister as the alter ego has taken on a life of its own.
King wrote the book based on his own experiences when it was revealed he was writing thriller novels under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Those novels included “Thinner,” “Running Man,” “Rage” and “The Long Walk.”

Spyglass Media and Eagle Pictures have teamed up to produce an English-language adaptation of Paolo Genovese’s Italian film “Perfetti Sconosciuti,” with “Insecure” star and co-creator Issa Rae attached to write, produce and star in the comedy.
The film, “Perfect Strangers,” centers around a dinner party in which a group of friends decide to play a risky game where they place their phones face-up on the table and agree to make all texts and phone calls public in an attempt to prove they have nothing to hide. The film takes a comedic approach to dealing with the friendship, love and betrayal that forces the friends to confront the fact that they may actually be “perfect strangers.”
“I’m really looking forward to bringing this funny and compelling story to a new demographic and could not be happier about partnering with the Spyglass team to make it happen,” Rae said in a statement.

The horror overlord is everywhere in 2019, and with good reason. But we may be getting close to saturation point
Stephen King rules modern horror – but how much of his reign can we take? In 2019, his stories seem to be everywhere. On Halloween comes Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining. It is the fourth King-derived movie this year, following Pet Sematary, In the Tall Grass (Netflix’s third King adaptation in three years) and, still on release, It: Chapter Two. Meanwhile, coming to the small screen we have HBO’s The Outsider, Amazon’s The Dark Tower, a Julianne Moore-led Lisey’s Story, The Stand, season three of Mr Mercedes and season two of Castle Rock. His 61st novel, The Institute, was also released last month. A TV adaptation is already in the works.

It might be pumpkin spice latte season, but we have reason to believe that this Fall should be relabeled as Stephen King's season. It: Chapter 2 just hit theaters, a Mike Flanagan-directed film based on King's sequel to The Shining debuts on Nov. 8, his new book The Institute is a must-read book this Autumn, and his new Netflix film In the Tall Grass is launching on streaming sites. Does the man ever sleep?

It’s just a field, right? That’s the entire premise to “In the Tall Grass,” a horror movie based on a Stephen King novella in which a group of people get lost in a massive, dense, grassy prairie and find themselves unable to escape.
King wrote the novella originally published in two parts in Esquire magazine in 2012 along with his son, Joe Hill. It’s the story of two inseparable siblings who hear the cries of a young boy lost within a tall field of grass. But when they venture in to rescue him, they find themselves ensnared by a sinister force that quickly disorients and separates them.
In the trailer for “In the Tall Grass,” we see the grass slicing into their ankles and the mud trapping them where they stand. And that little boy isn’t all he seems either.

[Editor’s note: Spoilers ahead for “It: Chapter Two.”]
“It: Chapter Two” has finally hit theaters, and the much-anticipated sequel to last year’s blockbuster Stephen king adaptation did not disappoint. In one of the most exciting developments in director Andy Muschietti’s follow-up, which was written by Gary Dauberman, the pair depart from the original novel to support a long-held fan theory that a major character — Richie Tozier (played by Bill Hader and Finn Wolfhard) — is bisexual. During a terrifying flashback sequence involving clown Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard), “It: Chapter Two” firmly establishes that Richie is not strictly heterosexual, and that the revelation that he is indeed interested in men is actually one of his biggest fears.
Specifically, he has feelings for Eddie Kaspbrak (played by Jack Dylan Grazer and James Ransone). “It’s actually not really alluded to in the book,” Ransone told IndieWire during a recent interview. “I read the book. It’s a big departure from the book.

Some of these shows have been around for quite some time, and others made their debut in 2017.
A couple of them have ended or were canceled, or may, unfortunately, be on their way towards cancellation, but one thing they all have in common is that they all are fantastic shows that are criminally underrated.
Also, many of you aren't watching them for some reason!
In this Peak TV era where there are too many shows and not nearly enough time to watch them, it's easy for a few of them to slip under the radar. Below is a list of shows that you may not have checked out, but you definitely should!

Starting today, horror fans can check into The Institute at theaters and on VOD via Momentum Pictures, and we caught up with co-director Pamela Romanowsky to discuss collaborating with co-director James Franco, the movie's unique filming location, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Pamela. What attracted you to telling this story by Adam and Matt Rager?
Pamela Romanowsky: Well, the first question for me was “why a horror film?” I like films across lots of genres, but I’m not a horror buff, so this was a first for me. The horror films I do love are genre blending, movies that are character-based and explore things that are dark but still based in reality, and in the dark corners of human psychology. I’ve never really been scared of the supernatural, but people are certainly capable of terrifying and very dark things.

With Momentum Pictures releasing The Institute in theaters and on VOD this Friday, March 3rd, we caught up with Gallerani for our latest Q&A feature to discuss working with Franco, the influence of Penny Dreadful, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Allie. What attracted you to playing the role of Isabel Porter in The Institute?
Allie Gallerani: I was drawn to Isabel’s strength, intelligence, and curiosity. These traits were not valued in Victorian society, so she feels like a bit of an outsider. I love playing characters who are a little bit stubborn and challenge accepted norms. As an actor, I’m always intrigued by a character’s transformation and Isabel’s is monumental.

James Franco continues in that “bad hair/facial hair” vein with The Institute, a psychological thriller in which he plays a doctor who seems to have forgotten the Hippocratic oath. As Dr. Cairn, he tries to “cure” the patients of the Rosewood Institute with torture and various other Franco methods, like popping up at their bedside, or calling his work “art.” The grief-stricken young woman at the center of the story, Isabel, comes to regret her decision to check into the institute for help. But it looks like the staff will have some regrets of their own, as things devolve into a Wicker Man homage. Which makes sense, since Franco co-directed the thing. He also stomps around in wire spectacles and a mustache that’s just hanging off his face—you know, like a real doctor.
